Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
Re: Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
was thinking about taken some plastics there from home to see how that goes.
Re: Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
Surprising enough the Jeramid seem to quite like fruit - even though I thought they were a member of the piranha family - so pineapple or banana works.Aardvark wrote:What Bait were you using for these Fish Guy's ??
I have tried prawns with a degree of success.
However, I still think if you do not really mind what you catch that it is hard to beat the common worm.
Thai fishers seem to favour the bread based types of bait that all the fishing shops sell in plastic bags in various colours.. Personally I can't get on with them, but maybe that is just me as they seem to have success with it..
Re: Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
I was fishing for Jeramid and I used Jack fruit. You can buy it in the market for 20 baht. Enough for about 5 full days fishing. I gave it to some people that wernt having as much luck as me and almost immediately they started to catch Jeramid. Wee Jimmy was using lots of different things, including chicken guts. As I fish for sport and not for the table Jeramid were my quarry. As Jimmy said they arent the best for eating but boy they do give a hell of a fight. I also used a shrimp that was left over from my lunch and I was looking forward to seeing what took it....another Jeramid. The fishing seems to get slow there when the sun is at it hottest, mid afternoon. But in the morning and until about 2 its very good, then as i left at about 4, Jimmy said he started to get planine. Im sure he'll update on exactly what he was using. At times it doesnt seem to matter.....I saw the thais using a paste and bread and they were having a great day.
Just saw your post Bob, try the Jack fruit. It stays on the hook better than Banana. I havnt tried pineapple but Ill give that a go next time Im there

Thanks for the tip Dermot, will try next time.
Jeramid can be made edible. The chef Paul & P used to have there prepared it with chopped chillies, garlic, onions, tomato etc. & it was very tasty. But I guess bread would be with that on it...
I caught a couple of rather nice sized ones the last time I was there & as the TG was going to see the family the next day she took them home... I gather that they BBq'd them Thai style & were singularly unimpressed. I was not exactly the golden boy of the family I gathered!!

Hahahahahhahaaha! Nice one Bob. By the by anyone wanting to fish for Jeramid better have a pliars for taking out the hook from their mouths. They have a serious set of knashers on them. I use the pliars for flattening the barb on the hook but they sure did come in handy. I now have a set of teeth marks on them from the 8.5 kilo one I caught! They used to supply them but as I have my own gear now I didnt ask. Im sure they still do but better to have your own anyway!

Why are these fish such bad eating? Are they too bland or too strong? Do you reckon one could make Thai fish cakes from the flesh?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
Personally Ive never tried but Im sure with all you add to fishcakes they would be fine. Ive never tried them myself, prefering planine and cats to eat here. I suppose Ive never tried becasue you never see them on a restaurant menu and they do get a bit of bad press. People said that about Pike though and although I caught many of them I never tried them until I lived in the States! Delicious and when i went back to Ireland people looked at me strange for taking them home. Lovely eating!

Pike is lovely, had it in France, I agree.
The way I make fish cakes there's not actually much fish taste left! Can make fish balls as well.
Cheers.

Re: Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
it is the blandness rather than anything else. Although with a lot of fresh water fish (including Pike) they can have a slight 'earthy tang' to them. Certainly putting then in fish cake/balls would overcome that. As far as fish cakes go, I quite like them made with tuna as the fish ingredient, as long as you have some fresh herbs to throw in as well....

Blandness, thanks, that's good, I often use bland fish because they can take up flavours and you don't worry about wasting the delecate fish flavour.

Dermot
Its been so long since one of these have been caught that its hard to remember what they take, they are not as difficult to catch as Siamese Carp which we discussed but from memory they are a bit like Panine i.e. take bread but Im sure other keen fisherman will have better ideas than me. I can still only watch people fishing!! One day I will be able too again.
If anyone has a bette suggestion to catch these fish let Dermot and myself know
Cheers Paul

Re: Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
No problem Paul, we'll catch you later. Saw some very nice Rohu (Indian Carp) go in yesterday as well a some really big Asian (big head) carp. Bob caught 3 very nice gourami (one, two and three kg.) yesterday. I was fishing mostly for pla jeramid, of which, a couple were in the 2.5 to 3.0 kg. range. Lost one really big pla jeramid in the weeds after a very tough fight.
Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the update.
Re: Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
Shado,
Can You tell me what method bob was using to catch the Gourami and as a matter of interest what you were using for the Jeramid. I usually fish for Jeramid there myself but i could always use some tips. Cheers

Gourami were caught on a small pice of bread (little fingernail size) under a small float with the bait barely off the bottom.
Pla jeramid were caught on fish balls (the ones used for soup) fishing directly on the bottom.
