Did not know that Westfield is a retailer. I thought it is a big real estate property management group.

One of my favourite restaurants in the world is in Thailand, Manhattans In Pattaya. Ive eaten in there for 2 people and its cost me over 4000 baht but if you eat off the set menu around 2000. Its hard to see hnow a restaurant like that could survive in Udon however, when you have people moaning about the cheap prices in the clock and elsewhere!

The Westfield Group has interests in and operates one of the world's largest shopping centre portfolios. The global portfolio has 119 high quality regional shopping centres in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and United Kingdom valued in excess of $58 billion, with approximately 24,000 retailers in 10.5 million square metres of retail space.

ian wants a top class bistro with ten tables and a top class chef. on another thread harmonyudon assures us that the head chef at a new steak house earns a hundred thousand baht a month. we could not keep the greenleaf going why would an upmarket bistro work. look at the threads that been run in the last two years. fish and chips, sandwhich bar, coffee shop, full english breakfast, sunday roast dinner. most asked question "how much".

On my monthly shopping/golfing trip to Udon I enjoy eating at Sizzler... good variety of dishes and very tasty and fresh salad bar. Maybe not so up-scale but reasonable and convenient. Just my 2 cents.

Individual retailers that rent space from Westfield, right? Never mind, back to the topic.

A good exclusive bistro in Udon, good idea or not? I think its a good idea.

Stargate,
The other restaurant target mainly on Thais and its still doing ok I think. Will it survive...time will
tell There is also a Thai restaurant in NongPrajak which is at the higher level and its still doing ok.

You can attract Thais and foreigners you can do ok. So maybe a good western style bistro can make it.

There is a new "upscale" multifloor shopping center being built just opposite the new Tesco Lotus in UD Town which is slated to have a cinema on the top floor. I would suspect "upscale" restaurants will also be included.

My post is on topic so fare I understand.

So here the info.

Location Tong Yai Road&Rung Sun Road

(I’m not a English native speaker, so I hope you understand the meaning from what I post here!)

Concept: Build retail shops fore renting out to business fore promote&sale exclusive foreign products food&vegtables.

Seems the E.U and EMN Europe is interested to rent this shops to promote and …

I have copy and paste the beneath from his e-mail:
… In co-operation with … EMN Europe the prime European supply and distribution center for manufactures and exporters throughout associated distributors, shops and wholesalers in Europe, as well as a large number of distribution shops and wholesalers across the world. …

Maybe something fore Heinz,Mora Snack or Douwe Egberts with coffee (by the way the have a excellent Blue Mountain coffee from this company in the Chinese supermarket Yee Soong (70฿ ?).

There will come a restaurant with a Maître de Cuisine, Chef de Rang, Obers and a Sommelier, that serve more then only the Pub&Taverne food as the do now in most restaurants here in udon :-$

I doubt very much if Udon Thani would get any upscale restaurant with a pleasant ambiance or quality food. The price would be beyond what a Thai or expat would want to pay. The closest and one I enjoyed as much as possible was Green Leaf, and still visit the Khon Kaen location, when doing a little shopping at Central. The only other one here that came close, not very, was Good Everything, which was just overpriced nice, very far from upscale.

Who

I couldn't agree with you more. It was a sad day when Greenleaf pulled out of Udon. The combination of great food and good ambience has so far gone unmatched. Maybe something will pop up in the new Central or this new Platinum upscale shopping cenetr going in opposite UD Town. Or maybe just maybe Greenleaf can be induced to return. One can only wish.

The Greenleaf, sadly missed.
With all the development going on around it at the time, killed off it's trade.
It was just bad luck, wrong place and the wrong time.

I'm sure someone will come along and open something along the same lines.
Udon is becoming more attractive by the day, Koh Samui under water, and Bangkok is slowly sinking.
Wealty ethnic Chinese-Thai land speculators, buying vast tracts of land in Udon Thani province. They must know something.

Another reason Udon hasnt yet got a top class restaurant is because there are no 4 or 5 star hotels in town, imo.
Punters who are willing to spend around 3000-4000 baht a night for a room in a top class hotel wouldnt baulk at paying a high price for food at a classy restaurant with good ambience.
The best is the Prajaktra (possibly 3 star) but places like the Centara or Charoen are only around 2 star.
But Udon is a fast developing place so you could well get some decent restaurants/hotels popping up in the next 2 or 3 years.
But,for the moment, there are just too many people who will only spend 100 baht a day on food but will spend upwards of 500 baht a day on beer ! 8)

Thanks Fran,

The first and only time I have eaten at Fuddrucker's was in Ryadh a couple of weeks ago. Living and working in a remote area of the Arabian Desert it was absolutely divine. Serving a limited menu and items prepared/served in a casual style would appeal to westerners and Thai alike. The produce/condiment bar is also attractive. The fries were served in 2 styles and excellent as well (no need for Maxims but appreciate the attempt at humor). Maybe it would give something like Sizzler a run for its money, maybe not, but that was my two cents. As per your suggestion, I will try an Aussie burger in a couple of weeks when I have leave to visit my family in Udon. We are expecting another addition so maybe they have a child's menu. If you are at the bar when I visit, I will most gladly get us a round, or several. I hope they have some good suds on tap at the ABB. Until then, All the best... BTW: I am looking at San Antonio for a place to work and relocate the family. Cheers

this is a difficult question as this can have different meaning according every ones different taste ( country) , to me this would mean, french cuisine , if we are talking here about fine cuisine, and not the fast food ( microwaved ) dishes sold in most of the falang restaurants , which i would call , hotel cuisine,of course in this case also it would be a lost cause to open a french cuisine restaurant, as the majority of udon inhabitants, are from country"s as the UK & america , whom are craving to eat only english style food , and preferably like the establishments also managed by own country man,
it will be difficult for others..., same like the german seem to like only their german food...,
so as for me as former cook ( french cuisine) , i am not really interested in the present falang restaurants , as i can cook all this easy at home , and better , sorry.., and a lot more cheap, ( surely when having few beers with your food, falang restaurant drinks , way to expensive ...) , and as of bobs remark, The other major problem with opening a top quality restaurant is the quality of the local produce available..., i disagree as many products are available here and some even better tasting than fe in europe.....,
so to come back to the OP, define what you mean with up market exclusive restaurant.... ???
according to who's taste????
so we can define what udon is really missing..... :-k
