Was thinking the same thing, as some things, are simply too easy and inexpensive to make, rather than buying an overpriced imported, name brand item. Google is a great reference, and learning the name of local herbs makes a huge difference. Now, if only i could find horseradish instead of horseradish sauce. :-(

I purchased a tube of horseradish (not sauce) at Nobi's last week. Hengstenberg brand. He had one tube left at that time. The expiration date is the end of next month but I don't mind going past that a little bit. You might inquire when he will be getting in a new supply.

I've bought my horseradish at Nobi's on several occasions. The only other place I've found it is at Villa Market in BKK.

That is NOT an excuse - it is an admission of guilt.
Worse (as you quoted me in the piece) you got the accusation completely wrong as well.
The gentleman concerned was offering VERY constructive criticism to any eating place willing to listen - buy cheap fresh local ingredients whenever possible to reduce your costs...

Of course imported goods are overpriced. They have to be shipped here, that adds nothing to the quality & plenty to the price.
To even suggest that Bisto quick granule parsley (or any other mass produced make) could come close in taste to the freshly made product with fresh herbs is just too ridiculous even to comment on. Quicker?? Sure, but no comparison in taste or looks...

Just a note . Although I haven't seen the seeds in the shops, it does grow quite successfully here.

For those who like cooking at home ....its perhaps always better. For those who wants easy good
imported Bisto quick granule parsley sauce, its maybe an option. Local made is more cheaper
than imported. It is not overpriced I think :D

i see no reason to buy it buddy, its pretty simple to make by yoursdelf. butter milk and parsley and flour to thicken if you want too, seasoning and stir for a few mins over a low heat. probably about 100 cheaper than buying it in tesco.

good luck

You can try this using wasabi instead of fresh horseraddish:

Mix wasabi according to taste with half a tablespoon of sugar, 2 teaspoons of dijon mustard, half a teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of white wine vinegar or lemon juice and a pinch of paprika until smooth. Gently fold one cup of whipped cream into mixture and chill 2 hours. Prepare the day you plan to use.
Be careful with the wasabi. Add a little at a time as you can always add more (like I do) but you can't take it out.
Hope this helps.....Enjoy!

Excellent suggestion, as i enjoy wasabi also. That sounds good. I also make my own salad dressings and mayo / miracle whip, google has so many recipes and it really is easy.

Parsley Sauce?

The perfect customer for the pre packaged vendor, always a market, which is a good thing. I've been cooking my own forever, when possible, it seems. Even before imported was available, just because I can, and find I use better ingredients, no salt, no preservative, msg, better oils, shortenings. Even when in home country, rarely bought processed foods, as much a taste thing as a health thing. Also I grew up cooking and a few jobs doing the same, though the pay isn't the best, so moved on to better income jobs. Some things are too easy, others will definitely take a little knowledge and equipment, so not going to happen. Along with finding the ingredients, which is a challenge. Simple shopping here is a challenge sometimes, going to 4 shops to get all you need, even if not making you are stuff. So items like horseradish at Nobi's and such are a welcome relief.

If cooking, making your own, knowledge of herbs are important. I grow a lot of my own stuff now, have seeds sent over from USA, along with seasonings I can't get here, such as granulated garlic powder, not salt. What is offered here is terrible or way too expensive, other things, if heavy, too practical simply to get here. Pickles is a fine example, anyone can make, vinegar, dill (pak chee), then I mince garlic and anyone can flavor the way they prefer. The mrs adds chilis. Salad dressing is another, mainly for health issue, though cost is a side benefit. Olive oil and balsamic vinegar is too easy. If wanting an Asian flair to it, try Sesame Oil, adds a lot of flavor, a little maggie / teriaki sauce, bit of honey, what ever other seasonings you like, a little garlic, quite good. Much healthy than any processed stuff. Mayo is oil and eggs, wow, that's hard, and you get to chose a much healthier oil, season how you like.

There is definitely a need for imported vendors, don't get me wrong. No matter what, they are going to be expensive. Not possible or practical for most, but I stock up when in Bangkok, bit cheaper than local vendors and I'm there anyway, but seem to have much better expiration dates. Was looking at Bistro Beef Gravy at Ngee Soon one day, and the expiration date was that week. I like cottage pie and beef stew as much as the next person, but using up a small one would take a while. Other things if you must have, you'll have to pay. Cream cheese, and different pasta sauces, pesto and such, yes, they are expensive, but also not easy to make for most people. Though shop around, things have wide range of prices. Pesto sauce is a fine example, 118 at Ngee Soon, 160 or more at other places, worth doing your comparative shopping.

WD....The last paragraph in your post in bang on the mark sir , the sell by date issues and safe arrival of the imported products is the only real bug bear with CC , there certainly is a market for these products even tho expensive but its the dates on some of the stuff thats makes life difficult , most stock is fine like the tinned products etc but others can have too short a date ,,,,, when considering the product is purchaesd in the UK - on container ship for a month then the customs warehouse until the tea money is paid then collected and brought to Udonthani 6 weeks plus are lost . Sell by dates can be from 3 months to 2 years so on the minimum youve lost half the date before its on the shelf .

The last time i went to the import agent (early Feb) in Bkk many products were missing or i didnt get them because of the short shelf life , some have stopped being imported all together becuse of short dates .

I supply Ngee Soon with the imported range this is why their shelves have been out of stock for a few weeks as they want minimum 2 months date on any products supplied .

Ive found its best to tell a cusomer if the product is short on / out of date and if nessesary discount or in some cases give stuff away as freebies .

STILL IT REMAINS THE CAUSE OF ME BANGING MY HEAD ON THE WALL SOME DAYS.

Chareosri ..my offer still stands (2nd post) i have half a tub of Bisto parsley sauce , drop in the shop and you can have it free gratis , im stocking up next week so its no bother.

I can back this coment up from Mash. He always informs of the shelf life and I have been the lucky recipient of the odd freebie.
We need imported vendors, but a fact of life is the short shelf date we have to live with.
