Farang Restaurant Closing Times

Post by DermotC » May 4, 2011, 1:21 pm

Ok this should have probably went in 'Another thing that pissed me off' thread but as its about Farang restaurants in Udon so here goes.....

I went out last night in search of a farang food fix at 8.30PM. First restaurant I hit was closed, a well known restaurant by the way. Not sure what time they closed but by 8.40 all locked up.....So a bit peeved I went to another one, closed also! What sort of BS is that? If you have posted your opening times on UM why arent you open?

This is the sort of thing that really annoys me. I take a shower, call the tuk tuk ( as i like to have a few beers when out) and then you guys cant be arsed sticking to your opening times? Whats up with you lot? If you cant be arsed serving your customers like you are supposed to, then i cant be arsed coming to your restaurants anymore ok?

I guess it's just easier and cheaper to send the Staff home and turn off the lights after a couple of hours with no Customers :-k

You do not say what part of town you were in but some bars do have one closing day a week in order to give everyone a break.

e.g Mojo's closes all day every Thursday.

On Adunyadet Road:

Indonesian George closes the Harmony every Monday, while Kiwi Chris closes the Factory every Tuesday.
Also, because of personal circumstances Andy may have temporarily closed his Jester's (also on Adunyadet) yesterday.

Other places in Udon may have similar policies, but the above bars (other than Andy) do advertise their closing days on their websites.

Most discerning diners will make a reservation ahead of time. Given that you have alluded to the opening times of this establishment, why didn't you make a reservation. Even the best restaurants will close early when trade is slow with the opportunity to minimize overheads. To demand a restaurant to be open at 8.40pm on the whim of someone who may or may not turn up is a little bit over the top People who fail to plan, plan to fail.

Trecker Tony,

Maybe you have been in Udon too long or out of it, one on the other....I have eaten at both of these establishments on a number of occasions arriving at 9.30 on some occasions and still open. They are not the type of restaurant that you would make a reservation for, nice places that they are!

I dont know what time you usually go OUT for dinner but ,most people I know dont eat until after 8pm. Maybe its your advancing years that you only go out at 6PM and in bed by 9pm? Given im not even in my 40's yet i tend to go out late. Wow expecting a restaurant to be open at their said and advertised opening hours I dont think is alot to ask and if they are closing early for some reason they should post so their customers know. YES, I expect restaurants to be open at said operating hours...Not alot to ask I dont think

Randerson as for you, Well why dont you go take a long walk off a short cliff. You do nothing but stir the crap on here. Nothing to add except for snide remarks so this is for you, blow it out your ass mutherfckr!

Captain, restaurants I attended last night dont close any day of the week but i see where you are coming from and thanks for your input

Wow Dermot...A little thin skinned tonight? That was an attempt at humor not a snide remark. The heat getting to ya?

Funny, I just looked back and could not find any comments about anything you've said. Just my "Attempt" tonight. Maybe about our disagreement about gun controll? My last inbox was 3 months ago about a truck. Nobody has contacted me. I'll go back in the box later night a/c is not working so good. Good night!

i'm going to agree with DermotC. it is at times "very confusing". i went down adulyadet yesterday thinking
to try jester's pizza (after 11am) but shop closed. are they open? are they closed? posted hours seem often
to be just "general guidelines" shops opening late or closing early or spontaneously closing for other reasons
or trying to remain open 12hrs a day (which doesn't work either). i would vastly prefer if some shops were
only open for 6 hrs per day , but always open as per their posted operating hours. it's not good business 8-[

Thank God, someone who agrees! I, too, would agree with Cali, open for 6 hours but stick with your opening times or custom will be lost. Its funny Im a regular at both places and just a bit surprised.

I mean really, can you imagine making a reservation in Udon, without something special going on?

I’ve been able to get something to eat on a number of occasions around 10.00pm at El Diablo in Nutty Park (caveat – not sure what days they are open or, if business is slack, whether they may close earlier some nights).

Regrettably the only fallback for really late eating (but not fine dining) is McDonalds or takeaway snacks from 711 – pity there is no “Subway” in central Udon :(

Make reservations, now that is funny. I do have the numbers of regular stops in my phone, since I'm not a local and things do change, and may ring them to make sure if the kitchen is still open when wanting a late night snack, which is anything after 9 PM, with the lack of customers, many do seem to close much earlier than you would expect. There is always Saphan Fish and Chips available, inexpensive, open late, and personable proprietor. Anything else after 9 PM is a gamble.

We sometimes close earlier too but only for heavy rain but never before 22.30 and if some of our customers call for dinner we open again. In Italy restaurants must respect the closing time written on the door.

Right you are; however, this is Thailand, and it is up to you to close whenever the notion strikes you to close the doors.

If you want to charge Farang prices. Then you should have Farang business standards.
And respect opening & closing times
