On the 4 weeks a year or so you spend here a year, for me, you opinion holds no water. So please continue to wear socks with sandals and a nice singlet. It wont be only me laughing at you! :D

Parrot, good point and well taken!
Not a bad comment from someone who's been in Udon for 5 minutes =;

Well Aard, Ive been 'Visiting' like yourself for a number of years and Ive been living here for almost 5 months now, which id say is alot longer than you have spent here. If you include the year i lived in Phuket in 2006/2007, ive actually lived in this country a while =D> Anyway i digress!

Back on topic, i can see where stickman is coming from, even though he doesnt necessarily agree with the comments. If you ever get up early and go to any 7/11, invariably you will see a dirty old farang, sometimes with socks and sandals and a singlet :D , drinking an archa or chang, smelling badly!

After reading this and a number of other posts it seems Stickman has a point...........
This used to be a forum that helped and assisted expats and tourists alike about issues around and about Udon, whether it was immigration issues or just where to shop or eat, for those who purchased homes help and advice using the knowledge gained by their own project or mistakes made, along with some light hearted banter.
More recently its become a bragging and slagging site with personal attacks on individuals who contribute, who cares what people wear, who cares who your friend is who cares how much your car or house is worth or how long you have lived here.
We are all here in the same boat, all strangers in a foreign land trying to get along with our Thai hosts and any expat from wherever they are from and of course passing on knowledge learned to assist one another....or am I missing something, I thought that was the idea of these forums??.......... But I guess I'm asking too much!!

I, for one, am not convinced that the Stickman comments are not the farang equivalent of thai prejudice towards "upcountry" people, culture, food, whatever. Anyone with half a brain would know the actual examples of foreigner or otherwise "dregs" to be found in Bangkok and points south.
As to you fellows lucky enough to reside in Udon and vicinity fulltime or part time, I certainly wouldn't give a "Tinkers Damn" what others think,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, cheers, LL

P.S. And to you TruBrit, you seem to be a man very much at ease with himself,,,,,,,,, I raise my glass to you and wish you many more good days (and nights,, ) to come. cheers, LL

Well I dress for personal comfort and don’t give a toss what others think and I don’t comment on what others wear, each to their own. Up2You. i don’t wear socks with sandals but I do have a lot of bother with the Mosi's.

Saboo, you mention “Wor Lass” I take it you are of North East UK origin ? I’m from Whitley Bay :-k

Val, you are looking good sir and a guiding star to all. May your bottle never be empty. \:D/

Thank you for the compliment bill. It must have been the bracing sea breezes in my younger days that have contributed to my youthful complexion . I too lived for a few years in Whitley Bay, well the posh part actually, West Monkseaton . With many a romantic assignment taking place at the lighthouse car park after meeting a choice Geordie girl at the dance in the Royal Hotel or sometimes at a grab a grannie night in the big place on the next corner who's name escapes me for now. Is the Sands club still going? .Those were the days

Saboo, ahh Consett, I spent a couple of years in Birtley just down the road, :D
Val, Sands Club knocked down now but I used to prefer the “Burgandy Cobbler” night club, Big place on corner “The Rex” still going strong. West Monkseaton still there and still posh. =D>
Mash the only Scunny supporter in Udon Thani, Issarn, Asia, Far East, outside of Scunny. Just kiddin lad…. :-" :-"
And I will be home Friday after spending the last 28 days down in Argentina, Chubut Provence to see the Farangs of Udon. =D> \:D/ =P~

This seems to involve stereotypes of Udon Farangs based on someone coming and having only a cursory look at the farangs one sees in the 200 meter long stretches of nightlife near the widely known farang stomping gronds, eg near Irish Clock or Adunyadet, especially those who rent 5000 baht per month rooms nearby, and then making hasty and sweeping generalizations.

From what I see on those two roads, there do "seem" to be plenty of farang in Udon who want to pay as little as possible for accomodation whether renting or buying, and others, or perhaps the same group, who spend inordinate amounts on beer and babes etc. meaning which is disproportionate to what they spend on accomodation. I have no idea what percent of Udon based farangs fall under this category, be it a few percent or a majority. Cannot judge a book by it's cover however, some of those simple looking guys live in nice big houses and drive Camrys and Fortuners etc.

It by no means encompasses the farangs I am friendly with, who seem like a first rate bunch, who were and are successful and have means to live well, and like myself chose Udon more for family reasons or a laid back life, not for "cheap charliesim". Frankly speaking, unless one lives very simply at a standard quite below what one sees in "the West", Udon Thani is not inexpensive when it comes to property.

But I guess the question remains, what percent are defined as down and outers (hard on their luck financially) vs the normal guys. Not sure the answer will ever be clear, and meanwhile we are all painted with the same brush, by Thais and nonUdon farangs alike.
