AGAIN, Austrian murdered in Udon Thani

Post by Alfred » July 28, 2011, 12:43 am

Please Google -Oberoesterreicher in Thailand ermordet- or Mod. please help with a link.
The informations there are only in German, sorry.
The Austrian from the Province Oberoesterreich was killed on 14.7.2011, by his wife, she, so it is told, confessed already. But the Thai Police did not inform the Austrian Embassy as usual!
Instead people who know the Austrian had to inform the Embassy, strange!
I hear that the Autrian was an Officer in the Austrian army and from time to time served with UN Troops in Kosovo and Libanon, he lived since long time mostly in Udon Thany and was married to a Thailady.
He used to hang out at the German speaking community places, Restaurants, Bars in Udon Thani city.
He was 49 young.

AGAIN, Austrian murdered in Udon Thani

From http://www.khaosod.co.th/view_news.php? ... B4Tmc9PQ==
A gist of the article:
The incident took place at 285 M. 10, B. Kham Bong (in the area of Hwy 2021 and 27km from the Nongkai Hwy), more than 20 stab wounds. When the police arrived, the wife, age 41, was standing over the man with the knife still in her hands.
The woman had a son from a previous marriage with a Thai man, and a 10 year old daughter. The Austrian man apparently lived with his wife for 10 years. He had some sort of run in with nearby villagers over the purchase of some land.
During the initial police investigation, the wife claimed self-defense after a fight with her husband who had been drinking wine. She claimed that he assaulted his 10 year old daughter when she decided to grab a cooking knife and attack her husband. She claimed she killed the man in self-defense.
Note: The article indicates his name as Col. (no further information) Manfred
Bambaeger, age 49. I'm not sure if the "Col." is correct....it could be some other abbreviation. And I'm not sure of the spelling of his name.
RIP

Parrot. That link you provided refers to him twice as Australian. Once in the heading "Udon woman kills Aussie" and further down gives his country as Australia, although it is obvious from the German language that he is Austrian .Just thought I would mention it to avoid confusion .
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

Thanks, trubrit. I should have pointed that out. The only report of the incident in the Thai press was in Khaosot, and that article did in fact say Australia. Thai Rath didn't report it.
I went with Austria after reading http://diepresse.com/home/panorama/welt ... t/index.do

Just an aside, but maybe that's why the Austrian embassy wasn't contacted!!

Sad story indeed. But just my personal opinions that I think the wife's confession not quit right. How come she stab him more than 20 times if it was self-defense? it seems like she wanted him to be death. I think the polices need to really investigate this incident very closely. And they not even report to the embassy, which to me just another " Save Face" and to do what ever it take for them to work at this case as lest as possible. I just think if something like this happen so often, if more farang been killed and no report to their embassy, it is not just gonna be the " loss face" for the investigation teams, but for the whole nation. If the lady was legally in Austrian law married to the Officer than she will get a pension after his death?
When the judge believes her self defence story for sure!
Also the girl, the child together will receive a pension after him, that is Austrian law.
Alone this pension,is at least 300-400 Euro a month for the child.
And than the Pension for her, about 800-1.000 Euro?
Reason to kill him?

I agree with augustus_777 that stabbing someone 20 times is not indicative of self defense. 20 or more stab wounds would be a indicator of strong passionate emotion of hate. He must have really found her trigger and she reacted with great amounts of emotion.

Something tells me there's a lot more behind this story than the 2 paragraph article that was in the Thai press. Without more background/info, who could possibly say what was justified?

This is another one of those incidents that happen outside the city limits that hardly warrant a mention in the news. When I do my homework and search for Udon news each day or so, I find lots of drug arrests, lots of young kids stealing motorbikes, and an occasional city murder. But news from outside the city limits (even though it's within Udon province) is very limited. That doesn't mean news isn't happening.....it's just not getting reported in the press.

Case in point: In the past week, at Kilo 19 on the way to Nongwahsaw, a friend of our neighbor was killed when a wheel flew off of a 10-wheeler and smashed into the cab of his pickup truck. A few days ago, a 24 year old girl was killed instantly at the Kilo 18 intersection by a passing truck. She leaves 2 small children and an alcoholic husband. Not a peep in the news about either incident.
