Udon Baguettes

I've tried a baquettes from a variety of stores/bakeries in Udon.......always think they're okay. But they don't seem to compare to the ones I get from Laos.
Any one want to weigh in with their favorite Udon location for baquettes........just the bread, please, as I'll use it for my own sandwiches.
Tomorrow I'm going to try the ones on the tiny lane across from the Amorn theater (nearly all the way to the end of that lane, left hand side coming from the theater). Anyone have any other suggestions?

For me, the best baguettes in Udon are still available from Carrefour (now Big C of course).

I don't know how much longer this can last - I imagine that when Big C bought out Carrefour it included all stock, which seemingly included a large stockpile of frozen, ready-to-cook dough (probably from France).

what the hecks a Baguette, sounds like some sort of fuel you toss on the barbie, or an Italian car

Large baguettes agree with Jack,smaller baguettes,if interested,are good from Udon Delices,I think 20 baht each :D

Agree with jackspratt; the Carrafour/Big C baguettes are/were our favorites as well. Was shopping there about 2 weeks ago and they were still the same at that time. We also buy the frozen, prebaked baguettes from Udon Delise to keep on hand. Just a few minutes in a hot oven and it's much like fresh bread. They have two sizes, small for 10 baht and medium for 20 baht.

When we make the occasional trip to Nong Khai we usually pick up some of the "Laos-style" baguettes at the Indo-Chinese" market. They are usually available in the afternoon.

Yes, parrot, it would be quite nice to find a consistent provider of quality baguettes here in Udon. I hope you find what you are looking for and I hope, that if you do, will share that info with the rest of us. =P~ =P~

ohhhhhhhh French bread, why didnt you say so...baguette, pinini's, coffee latee's are all abit swish for me, give a cup of gumboot, and a slice of sally lun...hahahaha

In Nong Khai, the old Chaiyaporn market has one lady who sells both the big ones (mmmm, good sandwiches), and the tiny ones, good for breakfast, if you stuff them with Chinese sausage and Vietnamese bologna, and heat them in the oven. 10 baht for the large ones, or 10 baht for a bag of five small ones...

I wish I knew where the bakery is, not to cut Grandma out of her 2-3 baht profit, but to get them when they're still hot from the oven. Maybe nkstan, or another NK old-timer knows the source...

Keep us posted on Udon's suppliers - we may end up there, riding the crest of the inland tsunami from Nong Khai.

The Lao/French style are nice, but my experience is that they do not freeze well - which is essential living in the boonies, and no daily access to fresh baked.

We freeze ours, and defrost them in the microwave, and they come out OK - not like fresh, but pretty good.

We also buy sourdough at Carrefour/Big C, and I would say that it doesn't freeze as well, and is a bit dry when defrosted. Ok for toast, and even for sandwiches, if you eat it right away.

Sateev needs to limit his bread intake anyway, especially since the rain has curtailed the 6am walking regimen...

If you guys have any specific requirements for a special type of bread, why don't you ask one of the guys who bakes the stuff to make some in the style you want.

It only takes a change of ingredients or style of cooking to produce something different, and most of the "bakers" in Udon are chefs as well and can follow a recepie.

I bought some large loaves of French bread at the old Carrefour today. Very delicious. I bought some when they first opened...but have never been back to the store as it doesn't do anything for me. But now that I've 'rediscovered' their bakery, I'll be back.
On the subject of freezing. I freeze them in the wax paper bags from my Corn Flakes and then heat them on a griddle or bbq, whichever is handy. But microwaving will toughen up the bread.....I don't know why.
We also freeze our Foremost milk (2 liter jugs).......saves going to the store all the time and there's no difference in taste (0%, 2%, or whole all freeze well).

Off topic, but Big C/Carrefour. What a sorry looking store......Big C hasn't changed a thing, except a few of their signs. Veggie/fruit bins more empty than full, limited supplies of fresh milk products, and a dearth of customers. But I give them an A for their bakery.

I buy the large oval seeded Village Loaf from Lotus. Cut it diagonally into slices of various thicknesses ( toast or sandwich ) and put in freezer in same plastic bag. Leave for about an hour or so, remove and shake the bag to loosen the slices.
You can take as many slices out as you want.....I thaw 2 at a time on high for 30 secs...........perfectly soft.
I bought the bread knife in Robinsons about 2 years ago...not cheap, but essential.

Yeah, walk into a Paris bakery and ask for a "French bread", un pain Francais SVP" :shock:

baguette, la flûte, pain parisien, ficelle all are "French bread"
don't think any of you would know the difference!

I might give a baguette at the ex-Carefour near the airport a try but doubt it is edible.

What I miss (from the US, of course) are Vietnamese French sandwiches - baguettes, filled with pate, or spiced ham, or BBQ pork, crisp veggies, and a sort of spicy mayo dressing. Where I lived, there were a lot of Vietnamese, and a shop called Ba Le used to have a line out the door all day long. Buy 5 get 1 free...

Saw similar in Laos, but not so far in Udon or Nong Khai...backpacker crap only.

I'd buy one for a member who can point me to one reasonably near by...
