peter, do you have some evidence to support these assertions (re pricing Aussies out of the market), or is it just apocryphal?

peter all the above is very interesting, and I am not disputing that (subject to Foreign Investment Review Board criteria) overseas interests are buying in the Oz market.

However, none of your links support your assertion that overseas buyers are pricing Australians out of the (property) market.

I don't think it much different then most Thai Government agencies. They interpurt the law the way they wish.

As mentioned why even mention the husband. He can't own land and that is not confusing.

Not sure how you deal with them, when rules are made on the run without following the Law, hard to do.

Are you so sure the problem of corruption in Thailand can be fixed so easily...just like that?!? If you do, you are very naive.

My wife is trying to buy land in Udon also. She went to the land office and was told that I would have to fill out the form and sign it that it would not be my property. She was told she would have to go the embassy to obtain this form??? Does this make any since?

The land office has the forms and the form states that the money used to buy the land,is your wife's separate property! There is a chance your wife misunderstood.

Of course there is always the possibility that a staff person said that and nobody will correct her/him,due to ''Face''.If it were me,I would make a trip to the Land Office myself!

I concur with Stan. I was there on Friday. Had to sign the form but no visit to Embassy required.
If wife married to Falang you should be there at the same time. Copies of your passport are also required.

Incidentally, if you don't want to spend all day there you can ask to be 'fast tracked'. Not really what I would call fast but will save you time. Will cost you 1K baht.

I believe you have to be present at the Land office. The lady that bought our land, had to have her husband come to the land office to sign off.She was a high ranked Gov't employee and told us,she should have not told them she was married to a falang.

You could have her enter into a private contract with the seller, agreeing to complete the transaction upon your return. We did that for 6months until my daughter was 20 and could sign off!
Have an attorney set up a deposit escrow account that you will forfeit to the seller,if you don't perform.Or have the property bought by another party, transferable to your wife when you return to sign off.

Stan, if she had changed her surname to her husbands she would have had a problem saying no. The first thing they asked my wife when they saw her surname was, "are you married to a falang?'
