I saw these signs along the Nongbualamphu-Udon Hwy at the kilo 16 intersection (16km from Udon) that advertises a grilled fish/somptom place along the edge of Huei Luang Reservoir. I haven't been.......but thought some adventurous folks looking for a change of pace might want to try it. If anyone goes, please put up a review:
The sign says:
9km
Rafts along the edge of the water at Huei Luang Reservoir
Food, Drink, Fishing, Rafts, View over the reservoir, Meetings, Seminars
Grilled Fish, Fish Lahb, Somptom
Open for business everyday, 11:00-19:00
It might be a nice place for a meal while watching the sun melt into the reservoir.
Total distance from the city would be about 25km.

Thanks for the info parrot. Not far from where we live and always looking for a new place to try. Would be quite interested in finding out about fishing possibilities there as well.

Thanks for the photos, kod. If I'm reading my map correctly, there should be some gorgeous sunset views from the location, especially with the southwesterly winter sun.

Hi Shado,
Fished there 4 years ago.5 of us fished all day,1 small tilapia caught,on a small spinner just before we packed up.But there was nothing at the place then, just the reservoir. So maybe along with improved facilities, they might have restocked the water.
Cheers and tight lines.

Thanks for the reply udonfox. I've fished quite a few reserviours in Thailand and quite honestly most are pretty heavily harvested by the locals. I've found the best way is to find someone who is knowlegable and has a small boat and willing to act as guide. This can cost from 200 to 1,000 baht for a days fishing depending on the location, equipment and fuel costs. Usually a young local guy will do this for less than 500 baht. The trick, of course, is finding him. My preference is to fish with artificial lures for pla shado, pla kasoop, and pla chon. This can be seasonal fishing and the locals have the best handle on when and where to go. For pla sawai, pla jeramet, pla nin, pla esok etc. some of the fishing parks around Udon provide decent fishing.
