Ill treatment at Udon Immigration
Thank you sateev you are 100% correct . The whole point of this forum is to collect data and use it to help yourself.I am not new to this forum and have been a member for some time but do not like to post because of the rude and just not nice responses i have seen some people get. For true brit to suggest i did not get the visa because i was being rude and not knowing me is rude in itself .My description of her was rude but as she treated me like a dog and had no respect for me ,lied to me tried to extort money from me for the second time would you expect me to describe her in a polite way. She WAS tall was thin and had lots of spots on her face.
There are 2 points to this.
1 I f somebody else goes there and she say the same thing to them they know she is not correct
2 When i went to nong khai office the supervisor there said she was embarrassed and angry and told me she was also in charge of udon branch and had no idea what was going on.She phoned the udon office and i could see she was angry with who was on the phone , apologised to me and sent me back to the udon office to get the 60 extension which they then gave me.
For the people who decided i was probably rude this is exactly what happened even though i cannot prove it i do not tell lies
I arrived just after 9am and a young smiling girl said good morning can i help you? I said i would like to extend my visa. She took me to the first desk on the right and the tall thin girl was standing at the desk.I said good morning ,she did not answer just asked me what i wanted.I still standing said i would like to extend my 90 day imm o visa for 60 days. She asked me for my passport which i gave to her she then said no you cannot extend again you have done 1 time this year already.Only 1 per yr.I said i had not been told this and had never seen it on any immigration website. She said we just have a new letter from bkk.She the said she would help me and give me a 30 day visa for 2500 baht.I picked up my passport and said no thank you i will go to laos and get another 90 imm o visa. Her reply was "are you stupid.did you not listen to me .only 1 imm o visa and 1 extension per year if you go to laos the will not give you a visa " i said i would still try laos and left.
Who do you think was not polite. This woman had a smirk of superiority and power that was written all over her face.

So, did you go to Laos? Did you get the extension or a new non-O?
Personally, I have had rude behavior from the one at Nong Khai, and have had her question whether I needed to apply for Permission to Stay (I don't), since she didn't know what a non-O-A visa was. Smiley had to step in and straighten her out, to which she reacted with annoyance. This was during a 90-day report, I might add, where she had no real reason to go all forensic on my passport in the first place.
The same woman got all bent out of shape when she saw my wife's non-O had been issued in Bangkok (before we moved up here), and got quite rude about it, as though it were a personal affront to her authority. I didn't bother to tell her that we had only moved here a few months earlier, because she was obviously loaded for bear.
I know the fat one used to lean on people to buy her khanom, but I haven't seen that the past few times. I think someone got caught asking for bribes...
They get away with this crap because there is no incentive for anyone to police the officers. I actually think the one at Nong Khai sees herself as thinning out the (farang) herd, and operates with impunity.
I remember this kind of crap starting when Thaksin came to power, with his Thai Rak Thai jingoisms. Kind of eased up, post coup, and now it's starting to get worse. Add the current and coming economic storm, and I believe it will only get worse, with either tacit, or outright approval from the top.
Interesting times.

Hi,
Just been down to Udon Imm. this morning, My third pemission to stay, due to marriage to a Thai, was accepted by head office in BKK.. So got the 12 months. Had said lady. She was very nice and helpful, and polite. Will not comment on how she treated you, until i have heard both sides, which is only fair.
For a P.to S. due to being married to a Thai National it is a requirement to have a income of 40,000B a month or 480,000B a year. Not 400,000B p.a. as some say. Money in a thai bank does not come into it. Please read "Thailand Police, Immigration" leaflet, on marriage P. to S. You can find it at Imm. Also in this leaflet, it states you must obtain a "O" visa from a Thailand Embassy or Consulate, outside of Thailand. A visa for LOS cannot be issued in LOS. No Thai Embassy or Con. in LOS. to my knowledge. Thai. Imm. can only issue permission to stay stamps in your passport, in LOS.
By the way they would not take my tax, and pensions returns, to prove my income, had to have a letter from the British Embassy. Costs 2250B if you go down, applied at 0900Hrs and picked up at 1400Hrs. and 100B extra if you post.
They took my house location, a requirement, from a printout from Google map. Also you need to take a Thai National, who is not a relative and has known you for 12 months, with you.
My friend applied to Hull Con. at the beginging of this year and was told they don't issue the yearly non imm. multi "O" visas now. His words. He got a single "O" visa, 90 days, and when he came over here, he applied for a P.to S. to support a Thai wife and his child.
Willing to show anyone my passport as to the stamps i got from Imm. Beats that dreaded border run, still i liked the Duty Reduced things.
Cheers Doug.

Hull DO still issue multiple entry non imm 'o' visas, but, as I said before, not without...
1. Proof that you are receiving a pension (no amount, no age restriction)
OR
2. Proof that you are receiving a pension of more than £900 GBP a month & are over 50 years old.
OR
3. Proof that you are married to a Thai national...
I currently have one in my passport dated 1st. Nov, 2011- expiry 1st. Nov. 2012. All done via the UK postal service with 1 working day between sending & receiving back....

Bob just curious. You said you got your visa by post. Was that done while you were still in Thailand? If so I thought you had to leave thailand to get a visa and then reenter. Or were you back in the UK?
No man has a good enough memory to be a succesful liar.

In the UK MS.
I think that there is a piece, somewhere on the Hull web site, that says it is actually illegal to apply for a visa from them if you are not actually in the UK...

If memory serves me correctly, the retirement visa (a big bennie for most expats as it was on the spot, no waiting 30 days for Bangkok approval) kicked in around 2004.....that's Thaksin days.....Thai women married to foreigners were once again allowed to own land somewhere around March 2001......again, Thaksin days. I don't see any connection between him, his party, or any inconsiderate power hungry immigration officer.
As I've been told, the Udon office was chock full of corrupt officers before it was closed sometime in the mid-late 90's (long before Thaksin). The first time I went to Nongkai for an extension in 1997, I was encouraged by old-timer expats to bring a bottle of Johnnie Walker for the officials. But the new crew at Nongkai never asked for or ever indicated any interest in under-the-table payments. Yes, the khannom lady had a unique way of encouraging you to buy her products, but in the end, she always delivered your paperwork, whether you bought or not. Nina, the dragon lady got on the nerves of a lot of expats because of her abrasive nature, but she was eventually farmed out to another section.
I'm of the opinion that anyone who offers money under the table at immigration is doing the rest of the expat community a disservice. In more cases than not, it seems that people who have problems at immigration are ones who either don't have the proper papers or are ones who are trying to work around established long-stay rules (married/retirement extensions).
Of the 20 or so long-stay expats I keep in touch with, I'm not aware of any of them ever having the proper papers/money in the bank and having to any official extra for the service (other than nominal copying fees........and yes, that might be questionable).
just my 2 baht

I've also experienced rude and unprofessional service by the subject immigration officer. On one occasion I went for my 90 day report. Having filled out the necessary form I sat and waited. 3 officers working at the time, one busy with customer, another busy shuffling documents. The one in questioned just finished with a customer and was organizing her desk, she glanced over at me and continued moving things around ignoring me for about 5 minutes. When she appeared to be finished she looked at me and ask what I was there for. I replied 90day report. She motioned me over asked for my passport and 90 day report form, which I handed to her. She briefly looked at it and told me just a moment, stood up and walked to a back office where I could visibly see her talking on a mobile phone. I sat and waited. The officer shuffling papers finished, looked at me, smiled and asked if I was being helped. I pointed at my passport sitting on the desk and shrugged my shoulders. He glanced over at the other officer seen her talking on the phone he came over and processed my 90 day report. When I left the unprofessional one was still yapping on the phone.

All the times I have visited nong Khal as well as udon , I only had one problem that was when the immigration wanted the house owner to state I lived there, as the house owner lived in the states, a lawyer for a small fee cleared up the problem. All other times narry a problem.

I've got to go along with Parrot. In the six years my wife and I have been here we have had only 1 small problem with immigration when the officer wanted 500B to move my visa to a new passport. The situation was quickly rectified after I asked for a receipt. The officer promptly returned my 500B. I've processed retired visas (OA) at Nong Khai, AEK Udon, Udon Airport and at the present location without a hitch (other than above).. The same goes for when we bought our vehicle - no problem at all. We just did our 90 day report and it was in and out in 5 minutes for both of us. From time to time I don't have copies of everything we need so copy charges are expected and always reasonable. My wife is a Thai-American and is here on a US passport with an O-A visa as I am. Renewing our OA visa annually is always handled relatively quickly and efficiently even considering all the paper shuffling and stamping of documents.

Sorry i went back to udon after the nong khai supervisor phoned and got a 60 day extension .She still told me she was correct and i should not get one and still asked me for 500 or she would only give me a 30 day ext.I just said i will give you no money and if you do not give me a 60 ext i will go back to nong khai and complain. She still asked me for money 3 or 4 times more in front of my wife who said the first time i told her i paid her 500 baht to this woman she was not sure to believe me but after this time she is disgusted with that woman.I gave her 2000 baht and asked for the 100 baht change and she said that was for copy.I pointed out she made no copies for me and she just glared at me.Sateev wrote:So, did you go to Laos? Both time this has happened to me i have been the only one in the office so perhaps they wait for someone to be alone ?
This happened to me once doing a u turn on the laos bridge about 3 yrs ago It was late in the afternoon and i just got my laos visa and as i passed through the immigration booth the guy asked for my passport.I was completely alone on that part of the bridge. He started asking me for money and would not give my passport back.I told him i did not have much money but he wanted me to go to an atm and give him money. i was getting nervous and after about 30 min i told him to keep my passport walked back jumped over the fence and was actually boarding the bus back to thailand without a passport when he ran up and gave it back to me. So perhaps it is an asian thing of getting you when you are alone and no witnesses ??

In my 2 visits to Udon Immigration to apply for re-entry visas (1 x airport, 1 x town) I was happy with the service.
However, I don't believe this is sufficient reason to discount the unsatisfactory treatment that others have reported as having received.
If and when I next go to Udon office, I will have a sharp eye out for the skinny, pimply one.

Hi,
At the time my friend was not married to a Thai National, and he could not get a annual Multi "O" visa from Hull. As i stated he got a Single "O" visa for 90 days, at the begining of this year, and when over here, on that, married his G/F. and got a extention to stay based on marriage. Since 2005 he has been going with this lady and spent 6 months of the year with her in LOS. and has a child by her.
Also when i stated you have to have a income of 40,000B a month, 480,000B a year, this is for your marriage extention, or permission to stay, as Imm. call it. For an ext. for retirement, it is 800,000B p.a. wither you are married to a Thai National or not. You do not require this money when you get your "O" visa. I have not said that. You have to sign a form, called a "Self- Certitification Guarantee Form", at least i had to. Confirming i have sufficient funds to meet all reasonable expenses during my stay in Thailand, including, if necessary, the cost of repatriation to the country of which i am a citizen.
I enquired about a retirement extenion, which i will go for next year, less hassle to get. No photos, no Thai witness, who has known you for 12 months, and no need to bring wife with you, also done in house, no need to send to BK. And was told what i stated above. And was told i would require an income of 800,000B p.a., will not put my money in a Thai. bank, my choice, married to a Thai citizen or not, for a retirement P.to S.
Alway found Udon Imm. polite and helpful, IMHO. i have been using them since they moved to Udon

Remember that you have to get your account updated on three seperate occations (3 months/ 2 months and 1 month) prior to getting your visa. The fact that you have B800,000 in your account 3 months before and have updated your account book 7 days prior to your visit with no transactions during the three months is not good enough for Udon Immigration

You don't need to deposit 800,000THB in a Thai bank to obtain a Retiree Visa. All you need is a letter from your embassy stating that you have enough minimum monthly income to meet the 800,000THB annual requirement. the letter is submitted along with the application form, 1 picture, copies from your passport, signed copy of the house book & signed copy of your wife's ID card.

Why do you need a copy of your wifes ID card fdimike?
I just take my bank book (updated 3 times in the last 3 months), or if you forget a letter from the bank stating the balance on those three seperate occations. My passport, my house book, my TM7 form and my photo.
I didn't even bother to take photocopies this year, as last year they didn't even look at them (just handed them back to me and then took their own copies ....... for which they then charged me).
I also believe that you are still required to produce a letter from the hospital when applying for your first two visa's saying that you don't have any contagious deseases.
