sound not working

Post by banpaeng » September 11, 2006, 7:41 pm

Today I was listening to the radio via the internet. I just tried to turn it on and nothing on several different stations. I then rebooted the system and it did not play even the startup jingle. Speakers will hum but no sound

Any suggestions. Already checked the volumn levels.

Try checking the sound card drivers. You may need to re-install them, if they have become corrupted.
have you added any new hardware/software lately?

I guess you've already checked the actual connections to and from the speakers and back of PC? You could disconnect and reconnect. Also check the connections, if there is a separate power supply for the speakers, (sometimes via a small transformer)?

There's also usually a small "volume control" down in the bottom right corner of the "desktop"....... it maybe concealed under the hidden slider part. You could check that's not been zero'd or muted.

If feeling a bit adventurous maybe I would then check the connections within the PC case.

After that, apart from trying a different set of speakers, I would then defer to the experts. :?

Guess I will have to go with the shop experts. Sorry Stevo but do not know where the sound card is. Basically if it don't work when I start it up I am lost. I have tried all the things Arjay said.

If it is outside the box I can mess with it. If not I am in deep caca.

Are sound cards generic. I have a Dell laptop and the dvd player went out. They are unable to fix here as I have tried three different places. They also tell me I must have a dell to replace it unless I want an external drive one.

Thanks.

BP,
Is it your Dell laptop that has lost sound? or is it a desktop comp?
what's the model of the Dell? PM me if you like

If it's the laptop, (assuming you have tested without external speakers plugged in)... the sound card will more than likely be integrated with the mainboard, so if it's a hardware failure, it could mean a new mainboard to rectify problem. :( (worse case scenario).
Dell's are decent machines IMHO, my wife has one (albeit 3 years old now) and I've had that in bits several times to upgrade/repair, and blow out them pesky ants
DVD drive... yes you will need the right Dell drive if you want it to slot in place of the old one, alternatively... use an external USB drive (as I do), which can be generic.
Could be something simple, but need a few more clues if poss.

You can make a quick check on the sound drivers by

Open Control Panel
Double click "System"
Click on "Device Manager"
(Depends on your operating system where this is located, for Win XP it's under the Hardware tab)
Find the Audio drivers in the list,
Highlight and Right click on the audio driver and choose "properties"

This will open a dialog box which will tell you if the device is working properly. There's also a Troubleshooting option on XP. Win Me has the option to reinstall drivers I think.

Hope this helps, I had a problem with my DVD and saw in the device manager it wasn't working properly, reinstalled the driver and all was OK again.

Brian, if it's your laptop, bring it by and let have a look for you.
