british or thai passport for daughter

hi, can someone out there help me, i have a 4 year old daughter who was born here in udon to me and her thai mother who is a thai citizen. I am wanting to take my daughter to england for a holiday in a few months to see family. I dont hold any passport for my daughter, would i be able to get a british passport for my daughter as i am a british citizen as well as her thai passport which i am going to apply for next week ( duel citizenship ) .If so how would i get a british passport and would my daughter be able to get a british passport , i have been searching the internet and websites with no luck if anyone as any advise on the topic or the best action to take that would be great thank you royrover

whatever get both in the long run it will benefit her. many loopholes to get over but it is worth it, others have done it I am sure they will offer advice.

Get both, she leaves and renters Thailand on her Thai passport, enters and leaves England on UK passport. At this stage when she turns eighteen she must decide which passport or country of citizenship she wants, hopefully by then the rules will have changed and both can still be held.

To get a British passport proof of entitlement is required. Are you named on her Thai birth certificate as the father? If not you may have a problem. I assume you are a fully qualified British citizen as some other categories cannot pass on their British citizenship to their children - also they only get automatic British citizenship for themselves, not any future children they have...

It is possible to get her thai passport stamped for 'right of abode' in the UK if you can provide evidence; this would save on passports. I haven't tried this yet but understand it is possible.

Hi,
My friend who is married to a Thai. and has a child with her. The child is two now. He was told, when he contacted the B.E about the chtlds birth that he could register the birth with them. Which he did. At the age of 16 the child can decide wither he wants a Thai passport, or a British passport. It is up to him then, for at 16 he is no longer considered a child under Thai law. Never been in this situation myself, so just going by his comments.

Did you register the birth with the British Embassy when your daughter was born, and get her "British Birth Certificate" ?
If so you wont have any probs getting the passport (form C2)
If it is possible to wait until her sixth birthday that may be an advantage, as she will only need one child 5 year renewal (at 11yrs) before she needs her first adult passport (16 yrs)

Hi everyone and many thanks for your advice its been a great help. I am going crack on next week and get her a thai passport first then attempt to get a british passport for her. I did not register my daughter birth when she was born at the british embassy would it be possible to register her now with her being 4 years old. I am named on my daughters thai birth certificate as her father and i am a fully qualified british citizen. I have all my supporting documents in order just need them copying in to english which i will get done in bangkok when going to get the passport. I presume your daughter is valid for a UK passport and all is in order as far as paper work is concerned.

Why wait a few years to save a little money, totally stupid, if you can get the two passports for your daughter then do it immediately, why wait, laws and rules can change, something could happen to you and she misses out or it becomes difficult for your wife or partner, just do it, go to your embassy and find out what to do, its easy. My son had his Aus and Thai passports at six months of age, done and dusted, his!!!

Get both passports ASAP my wife has both and so does my son, never heard of having to choose as far as I know you can have both with no problems, many of my wife's thai friends have both as well, so enter UK or anywhere else using UK passport and use thai one to enter Thailand, saves so much hassle.

Can I join in with the "get both passports" gang. I have just acquired a British passport for my 10 month old son and we'll be getting the Thai shortly. Pretty straight forward and clear on the FCO website and the embassy are very helpful.
Can I point out that I believe a certain former Prime Minister of Thailand holds both .. so if he can ......!!!

If you can believe what you read in the press, and elsewhere, a different former Thai PM holds anywhere between 2 and 8 different passports from various countries.

opps had it around the wrong way, never mind better finish off....(1) a person born of a father or mother of Thai Nationality whether within or outside the Kingdom...

I know a number of Thais who have dual nationality..even I have dual nationality..thing to watch is leaving one country on one pasport and entering the next country on the other passport...the dudes at the border get alittle puzzled as to why you were not stamped out of the country you left on the passport in front of them

Yes, most countries put an exit stamp in your passport upon departure. In the USA passports do not get an exit stamp. Entry and exit are controlled electronically and coordinated by the the airlines.

As as US citizen I always just checked my luggage and went straight the gate when travelling internationally. Recently, my Thai wife was with me on a trip to the USA. Upon departure I wasn't sure if she needed to be stamped out or not. Checking at the departure gate counter I was told that the airline collects the entry card that was stapled to the wifes passport and no need to pass through an immigration check or have the passport stamped with an exit stamp.

I know this is bit off topic but might be of interest to anyone holding a Thai passport and travelling to the USA.

American here, so know or understand nothing of UK laws. What is it the honor system? Seems once you have both, you just renew them both.
