How to get a Lao Helper?
Guys, My wife's mom is sick and is likely to need help with changing clothes, cooking, going to the toilet, etc. for some time. (When my own mom had this problem, it lasted 4 years till she passed away, and pretty much broke me in more ways than one.) I've heard Lao helpers are good and not so expensive. Anybody have experience with one? How do I find a good one? What would I pay her? Thanks for any advice you can give. This is a tough time. Alan

83 readers and no reply yet. Possibly I should just look for either a Thai or Lao helper? If anyone wants to write me, I'm at 1234milkman@gmail.com. Thanks! Alan

Hi Alan
Why don't you ask your wife to deal with getting a helper? To be honest, that was my first thought after reading your OP.
There are a few reasons imo why you should not get involved personally with hiring domestic help.
Good luck

I know some Thais who employed Lao citizens. As a member of ASEAN Lao citizens can come to Thailand and get a work permit for one year renewable for a total of 3 years when they must return to their home country. As for finding a helper or maid, I don't know of any work services companies providing that support. You could do further research and then visit Vientiane to recruit someone..

Pienmash (or anyone else), I'd love to hear a story or two about what can go wrong when you hire a Lao helper.
How to get a Lao Helper?
Hi alan
i dont know about the situation in Thailand but in vientiane we have a maid/babysitter who comes in 5 days a week 800 000 kip a month, all organized by the wife.(which probably explains why they are all old birds) this seems to be the way it happens here, good ones are hard to find, you might be better of making a trip to vientiane or posting on findinlaos or faranginlaos they both have an employment section, had a light fingered one once and another one with a dropkick laokhao swilling yabba addicted husband who seemed always to be lurking nearby, The one we have now is a good worker and great with the kids

Lao-miner, how much is 800,000 kip- sounds like a fortune!!!
Pienmash, I'd also love to hear what can go wrong. They say experience is an expensive teacher, so I'd rather learn from the mistakes of others.
Thanks to all of you for suggestions. My wife's mom's better now- and says she doesn't want anyone!!! Reminds me of my own mom, may she rest in peach. She was up and down - for years - until she finally passed away. Not sure if we should force someone on her, or just wait for the next down time. Any thoughts?

You must be kidding Mash. Milkman himself doesn't need help ....pienmash wrote:Pay the bar fine and take it from there ........ .
Most of the lao-maids work illegal in Udon but in fact barfine is also illegal, so the BIB won't bother i think.
Don't be a loser, don't comment on others if u haven't achieved a thing.
Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.
