If you read the bangkok post it was four soldiers killed and two injured, if you watch the film clip the first two motorbikes have two soldiers on each bike you can see them get shot and fall of the bikes, then the rebels make sure there dead by fireing more shots into them, the other rebels firing up the road at other soldiers they where the ones injured. awfull mess down there the military have already arrested some of them.

Westerner murdered on Phuket in execution style

From Phuket, reports are emerging of a murder investigation which has been instigated following the discover of a foreign man, thought to be of western origin, who had been either dumped or drowned in a Pond.
After the grim discovery by local residents, in the Patong Hill area, Police and forensics were quickly on the scene as the man was found tied up with rope and wrapped in garbage bags. He had suffered head trauma and been stabbed multiple times in the head, torso and ankles, according to sources.
The identity of the man is so far unknown, however police have described him as a “westerner”, aged 40-50 years old, 6 ft tall, well built, (at approx 90 Kgs), and slightly balding. The body was only wearing black boxer shorts when discovered.
The corpse is thought to have been in the water for up to a week and as the body has no major scars or tattoos identification is going to be a challenge for the authorities, who have appealed to the public for information regarding any missing persons matching this description.
The body was sent to Patong Hospital as teams of scientists and investigators work to establish his identity and perhaps the reason for his obvious execution. Opinion expressed indicate that the authorities think that the man will have been a long term local resident and not a tourist and, based on that theory, the chances of his being noticed as missing are significantly greater.

What does it have have to with Udon? Well, it does have to do with Thailand....close enough for my interest. Though perhaps the thread title should mention " in Phuket" so those not wanting to read about things outside Udon would not waste their time.

I'd hardly consider the incident a drawback for tourism....unless the guy was an innocent tourist meandering down the street/beach and was assaulted. My guess is, it probably didn't happen that way.
