I'm surprised you could find chipped beef. I've been looking for it for ages. In the meantime, I've been using ground (minced) beef and it is an acceptable substitution.

I believe that those who try your SOS will like it. Tasty and filling (IMO). =D>

I never heard of red SOS either.

Bubba, is this the old-fashion chipped beef that Armour used to sell back home in the small reusable glass and mixed with white gravy on toast? I'll make it there for that if I can get a couple of fried eggs over easy on the side. Will this be an anytime of day thing or just a breakfast hours item?

Salt, pepper and tabasco...yum! When is this down home delicacy being served?

Served on toast? I think that would be good on some fresh baked cornbread.

Heh, methinks this is going to be another philly cheesesteak thread. What you describe is most definitely NOT SOS. SOS is creamed chipped beef gravy served over toast. That is white gravy, made with butter (in which you saute the chipped beef first), flour and milk or cream. Only additions are salt, pepper and optionally, tabasco sauce, though some DO add onions when they saute the beef. The only way my mom made it, and pretty close to how the Marines made it I think, though I have to admit I was never a cook in the Marines, so I am guessing based on taste. (and yeah, it was one of the better breakfast choices! ;))

Red one, is Minced Meat.......I believe!! Another military standard breakfast menu item!!!

SOS done with both grounded beef (which I prefer) or chipped beef.

In Hawaii, bowl of rice with a hamburger paddy on top.........cover with SOS and then top it off with an egg (over easy). Add chopped onion, soy sauce and heavy on the tabasco. Called a Loco Moco!!!!

Just got home from Mr Tongs with a group of 8. Will post the details tomorrow... errr, later today.

Sorry to mislead anybody, the SOS is the GROUND beef version, but very tasty...IMO. The other variations can be tried before your trip to the track tomorrow (today), Mosquito! ;) And bring Mac with you!

SOS made with proper country sausage instead of ground beef is my favorite, served on baking powder bisquit or toast.

Well I would call this sausage gravy over biscuits, but I guess it's just a question of terminology.

Concur with Bubba. Buttermilk or baking powder biscuits with sausage cream gravy is just that. Biscuits, sausage and gravy. Typically served for breakfast. Darn tasty and one of my all time favorites.

SOS is usually made with a bechamel (white) sauce and chipped or minced beef. Typically served on toast. Also darn tasty and I make it often. I usually have this for dinner but it can also be a hearty breakfast.

ORANGE BOWL @ Bubba's Bar & Grill

Post by BigBubba » January 1, 2013, 6:44 pm

***

Had dinner with some friends last night and they expressed interest in coming in for breakfast tomorrow and watching the live broadcast of the Orange Bowl from Miami. It's N. Illinois 12 - 1 (they lost the season opener then won 12 straight) vs 11 - 2 Florida St. If we get enough participants we can start a friendly "pool". You tuned in David and Mosquito?

Open at 0830. Game starts 0837.

We'll have our regular breakfast items (including egg muffins). And of course the bar will be open. ;)

Come and join us, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We had a nice turnout for today's game so we'll do the same for tomorrow's Sugar Bowl game. It's the Louisville Cardinals 10 - 2 vs the Florida Gators 11 - 1. Florida is favored by 14.

Open at 8:30. Try the SOS with a couple fried eggs, or our BIG and Tasty Egg Muffins, and enjoy the game!

Underdog Louisville is DOMINATING Florida and leads 24 - 10 at half time. A little "trickery" gave Florida another touchdown as the half was ending, otherwise the Cardinals lead would be even bigger. Remember, Florida was FAVORED by 14 before the game! But it's not over til the fat lady sings as they say.

People are saying I didn't give enough notice about these events. So, TOMORROW we'll be showing the Fiesta Bowl, same time, 0830, which IMO might be one of the best matchups of the entire Bowl season. It's Oregon vs Kansas St. AND tomorrow we'll have a VERY SPECIAL breakfast item on the menu. Stay tuned for update! ;)

FIESTA BOWL @ Bubba's Bar & Grill

Post by BigBubba » January 3, 2013, 7:14 pm

Open tomorrow, Friday, at 8:30AM for the Fiesta Bowl live from Glandale, AZ. Below from the Bleacher Report:

The 2013 Fiesta Bowl is thought to be the most exciting matchup of bowl season after the title game.

But if we're being honest, watching Oregon and Kansas State do battle will be a whole lot more entertaining than Notre Dame and Bama, especially if you're a fan of elite offenses.

The Ducks blew out every team they played, except for Stanford, and they boast an offense that averages over 50 points per game.

The Wildcats had a couple close games, but they are led by Heisman finalist Collin Klein, who scored 22 touchdowns on the ground. They also have the most impressive win of the two teams with their 24-19 victory at Oklahoma.

Many pundits seem to think this game will be a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair. While that type of game wouldn't surprise anybody, the Ducks have a chance to really dominate this contest.

In addition to our normal fare, tomorrow we'll have Huevos Rancheros on CORN TORTILLAS!

Come join us!

What time and will you provide a Brit fan with an insight into tactics and how the game is played?
