Just a couple of comments on the overnight train between Bangkok and Udon.
My first choice is first class. If you don't book two seats, you may end up sharing the compartment with someone else of the same gender. Tha could be good . One of the things I really like about first class is that you can take a quick (though cold) shower. Makes me feel a little fresher when I arrive .
Second choice is second class sleeper, lower birth. The upper birth sways way too much, and many of them get a freezing cold blast from the air conditioner. Get the lower if at all possible
During times of heavy travel, particularly around Songkran, the trains and many busses will be packed to the rafters. Some airplanes would too, if the airlines were permitted to do so. Songkran is the time families get together, and if necessary, people will travel like sardines in a tin from their places of work to their villages, then back again. Its too bad you didn't take a picture of people climbing out of the windows. I would have liked to have seen that

I don't know of a site through which you can book/pay for a ticket, although I would imagine a Thai travel agent could do this for you...
alternatively, you could email or phone your enquiry, here is the official Thai railway site which contains email address & phone number:

First time I took the train here was almost 40 years ago and doesn't look like much has changed. It's always been a good experience for me especially if you can get the 1st class coach and are not rushed for time. Like BKKStan says, if you take the night train then you are saving the cost of a hotel room in Bangkok, too. Fairly cheap at 1177 Baht with relative privacy and the car attendant will even bring you food and drink. Or you can meander on down to the club car, order your meal and relax.
A question for those who have taken the train to Bangkok recently (last time I rode it was 9 years ago). How close is the skytrain/subway to Hualomphong station, walking distance or take a taxi? Any directions would be appreciated.

Polehawk,if you take the train to Bangkok,as you exit the train terminal, you will see the sign and the walkway down to the underground subway, very easy.Take the subway to the Asoke station, take the escalator up to the Asoke BTS station ,take the skytrain one stop to Nana, which is Soi 7.You could walk from Asoke to Soi 11.
