Building a Wall

hello again gentlemen,
i have just had my land filled in udon and am looking for a reasonable priced wall builder to enclose the land.Any suggestions would be much appreciated thankyou guys and girls

Hi Guys
Probably a little outside your OP but if you have just filled your land, and you plan to put up a wall on that fill, may I, "with all due respect", suggest that you wait until the fill has settled and firmed up, as you would when laying a pad for your house. If the columns are placed in unsettled ground, you will more than likely have severe cracking and dsitortion later on. If the fence is to be built on existing stable ground, then my apologies for interfering

Definitely good advice to let the ground settle first, I did a fast fill and build (daughter born and early retirement) and one side of my wall is bowing. Of course it depends on how high of a wall you're building, but anything over 3 meters I'd wait or place temporary supports / re-enforce the foundation.

Spend close to 200k on the wall, and will most likely have to re-do half of it!!!

I would definetely wait, until we have had the rainy season before I would build anything, I will save you for a lot of trouble

Just some questions to the wall builders posting here as I will be in the same boat as ianrodders and building a wall in the future.

-Did you think it necessary to get local engineering design?
-Did you place piles along the wall to avoid settling and cracking or just a reinforced concrete beam and columns?
-Is it better to build the wall first then fill with soil or vica versa?
-What drainage along the wall foundations would you think is required?

I have only built properties in Vietnam and always piled, as i was down south across the mekong delta mud and most things need piling into the mud. Vietnamese who did not pile to try and save money always had cracked houses and walls.

If you are building a boundary wall that is also a retaining wall, two different things then you should have it designed by an engineer, in Australia a retaining wall retaining over 900mm must by law be designed by an engineer.

If the wall was a retaining wall plus a boundary wall then I would build the retaining wall to ground level before placing fill, once the land was filled I would then build the boundary wall from ground level up, ie the retaining section R/C concrete, above ground R/C columns out of the retaining wall at about 3 metre centres with concrete blocks infilled, top of retaining wall foundation for boundary wall blockwork, clear as mud.

Your information is absolutely clear and down the same lines as my thinking. Other feedback to ianrodders regardng settling and firm compaction of the land is food for thought for the methods used for the footings will all add up to the final botom line cost. I'll assume no one drives piles in UT due to good solid natural ground and a deep ground water table.
I am toying with my idea of building the bottom foundation beams and the columns with cast in slot of about a 40mm rebate and then precasting 3 mtr high x 3mtr long reinforced concrete wall panels 50mm or slightly thicker on site and then craning the panels into the slots to form the wall in place of building a block wall.
