First time in Udon

Post by smirky1 » March 9, 2013, 6:25 am

Hi everyone

I will be visiting some friends up in Nong khai next month and feel that instead of just passing through UT i should have a look around for a few days. I was just wondering where would be a good place to base my self ? I am a simple soul with no need for high end hotels just a clean bed and a few farang bars would be great.

Just hoping some of you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Smirky

Top Mansion would most likely suit you best. Right in the middle of it all and no transportation needed

If you like some exercise, Nong Prajak lake is great for an early morning or evening walk. It's a bit of a hike from Top Mansion so you'll need to plan how to get there. I'm sure the staff at Top Mansion can advise on this.

if he just slips up the road from the TM, he might get whats equilvant to a seven mile run without actually needing to hike over to NongPrajac... ;)

In case top mansion full, plenty of other small hotels around. Research this site and it names a few. My personal recommendation would be Ruysuk, if you are willing to walk a kilometre or take a tuk-tuk) to the centre.

Places to check out. Depends on what you like, but more famous spots are Irish clock, Day and night (bar complex) Nutty park (another bar complex), Mr Tongs (gets mixed reviews). Also other bars in vicinity. Thai spots worth mentioning - Taweng Daeng (music) Yellow Bird (disco/music). More general shopping places to visit - Night market, UD town, Central plaza. All these are within walking distance (except perhaps Yellow Bird, about 1 kilometre). The Farang Bars tend to be quiet most of the time - too many bars and not enough customers to fill them.

There is not much of a selection of farang-oriented bars in town, and those that exist are varied. Its best just to get out and walk around the areas around Top Mansion/Irish Clock. You can glimpse all the bars in a 20 minute walk around the block.
