Beware the "Fedex" virus

Post by bluejets » April 3, 2013, 5:20 pm

May be a bit off topic for Thailand as this happened to me here in Aus the other day.
However, I know Fedex operates in Thailand so i thought it may be of interest there.

Had an email sent claiming Fedex had tried to deliver a parcel but i was not home to collect.
I get quite a few parcels delivered every day so it did not seem unusual, however, the time of attempted delivery seemed a bit strange as I should have been at home.

Did not open the attached instruction as to how I should claim my parcel as it looked sus with an exe file name, so just printed off the first part of the email and went downtown to find the mysterious parcel. Never found it of course as it did not exist.
But...if I had opened the exe file (according to phone call I made to Fedex) there was a bug that would have caused quite a bit of a problem.

Opening the email links isn't much of a wise thing either.

I use McAfee spamkiller, it holds the email on my email server letting me delete it without getting near an attachment, I get to see plain text only

I filter out emails that are not "friends"

I know they do this in the US. If the package was undeliverable, a notification would have been left at the door. The notification would have informed you that a delivery of a package(s) was attempted and at what time. Notification have the Tracking ID, time of the attemped delivery, date, AND, PHONE NUMBER to contact FedX. They would also inform you on the notification if another attempt to deliver the package will be made later that day or the next day. At least that is what they do in the US....don't know if that has changed since I have been here for the last 8+ yrs.
