Wonders never cease around Udon.....growing bigger everyday. Today I spotted what seems to be the newest attraction: Horse riding for children, adults, and autistic children. The riding area is behind the Prajaktra Hotel (apparently the same owners).
The area appears to be very clean well maintained (it's new).....shaded area for parents/guests, numerous stables.
The sign in English says:
Prajaktra Horse Riding Club

Hose Riding Lessons for children, adults, and autistic children

Open Daily
Morning 0700-1000
Evenings 1500-1900

Plenty of horses there....matter of fact, all the stables were full. All looked well taken care of.....very clean inside each stable.
I don't know much about horse types, but I know the horse in the left-center of the outdoor photo is an odd-ball type. If you have a child in your family, no doubt a visit would be in order in the next 2 months.

Quite a mixture. I'm sure at least one of them could be a Mongolian Pony, and another a Paint Horse. Makka being a contry boy will know far more than me. And the first one shown had Ribbs showing which didn't look good to me

Sorry about the pricing system....I didn't ask.....but there are phone numbers in one of the photos above. Yes, the area is behind the hotel you mentioned....owned by the same family. Your daughter will enjoy the 'Thai' horned horse in the photo..........can't say I've ever seen one in Udon....or Thailand for that matter!

thanks for the photos Parrot..

yes afew of them could do with a good feed, especially a couple of those little ponies outside in the mud..but in general they dont look to bad..

I am far from an expert, but yes the one facing the opposite way to the others in the photos looks like your Mongolian plains horse that took Ghenis Khan and his brother Don, clear across Asia, and then you have your Pinto at the bottom which took Geronimo halfway across America. The dapple in the 2nd photo has the color and spotted markings of a Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador, but then again it could be a mix of Arab and Andalusian..It has that powerful Andalusian look to it, with the small head of an Arab. The top photo looks like an ex Malayasian race horse, with its KL tatoo on its front flank, maybe an ex trotter, but then again its hind quarter muscles are withered something bad. Maybe it blew up early in its career, and was passed on....certainly a good mix there..The white one looks to have the best temperment, and friendly inquisite nature.

anyway Parrot thanks again, it was interesting to see your pics, and now I know there is a place I can visit when next in town.

I'm with Tally, has anyone actually taken their children for a ride (horse)??

Don't want to just show up at the place and take my chances that the operation is safe, horses (even very old ones) can be tempermental.

tell me about it..I am sitting here a broken ankle in seven places, thanks to my nice little horse having a rodeo moment on me..horses are unpredictable as you say, and even the best riders fall off ..

but horses are more than just riding as well..its all the other stuff thats goes with it, the clothes, the equipment, walking them around, etc etc.. if you get no replies to your questions here, then I suggest you go into this place, and watch and learn..let your kids and the horse get use to each other for days, enjoy just walking the horse around for the first time or two or three, if you are unsure of riding...get to know the horse...work your way up to that riding stage, and when you do let your kids ride, make sure they have a tight fitting hard helmut on..they even have plastic body protectors , like a gridiron player wears, for horse riding these days. have a couple of pairs of pants on..walk beside your kid if she / he is young and a new rider, and stay to the soft ground..start on a pony if they have any, as I say , work your way up..I am surrounded by horses and mainly girls and women riders...they love it, and love all their pony club, jimcana stuff, they have their moments, they fall off now and then, I fall off now and then, but thats horses....but dont listen to much to me, go and see those horses yourself, you will get a sense of what one is gentle, and what one is easily spooked, moody, ears back,...get the owners to show you them in action, but tell your kids that they wont be riding on that first day, just getting to know the horse..thats how I would do it...

Whatever the cost, I'd guess it's a good deal cheaper than what you might pay in the US.

Took the daughter to checkout the place this afternoon around 3PM.

Hours of operation: 0700-1000 / 3-7PM.
Closed on Mondays
1/2 hour of riding with a handler and trainer cost only 300 baht, daughter couldn't handle any more (hot with a helmet and flack jacket). Riding area toiled dirt, semi-soft.
1 hour 300 baht (obviously)
8k for 10 lessons, thinking lessons were 2 - 3 hours per session.
No refreshments available, so bring a cooler with drinks/snacks. They allow feeding of the horses/goats, so apples and carrots would work.

Luck would have it that we were the only customers at 3PM which was nice for our 1st visit. A few riders showed up after 4...........problem being staffing as really only saw one guy who seem to know what was going on!!!

Oh, maybe 10 riding horses.........3 of which were for small children. Back coral area had a few small ponys, but they didn't look that healthy (coral also held some deer and goats).

Daugher had a great time (hopefully will be asleep early tonight), planning on a return visit on Sunday!!!

Sorry, corral..........hate making typos!!!

Would also recommend pants and a long sleeve shirt, will be hot...........safety first!!!
Flack jackets were a little big (daughter 4 1/2 years old), helmet fitted fine!!
Bring soxs, if you want to fully outfit with riding boots. Daughter only wore sneakers, which worked fine.

Wow, obviously it's 600 baht for 1 hour...............old age sinking in. Along with living in Thailand for over 5 years, and hardly using any brain power (not counting the brain cells killed by Leo beer)!!!

Both my kids, son is 5 and daughter 13 ride there often, both have had very good results from their lessons. If you like it quiet and want to get more personal attention from either of the instructors it is best to go early morning or at around 3 pm like Mosquito did (but it can be hot) so most arrive after 5 pm as the arena is also floodlit...

It is best to give it a try first, then I would recommend taking a full course if serious about learning... it is very surprising how much progress can be made in a 10 hr course and most students are happily trotting without a safety rope after one.. I reckon considering the cost of keeping horses the lessons are cheap especially if you compare them to Bangkok prices which are double.....

Mosquito... you can get refreshments there is you ask, normally the lady you pay will radio through to the hotel to bring you a menu or refreshments if you already know what you want to order... If I go in the mornings I sit and watch having breakfast or at nights maybe a cold beer... just spectating is good if you are not feeling that energetic ' :D
