Is work supposed to be a happy place?

Post by bumper » April 26, 2013, 11:24 am

Or is it the place you endure to make a living?

You know I really didn't like other people telling me what to do. But, I sold my time to someone and did as I was instructed, did it make me happy no. I don't think me being happy was ever a part of the equation. Lets face it very few people eve feel like they have enough money.

Low pay 'causes unhappiness'

Online news:

Low wages are the major cause of people being unhappy in their job, according to a survey released Wednesday.

The survey, conducted by job search site JobStreet.com between April 11-18, asked 4,621 blue- and white-collar workers across the country whether they were happy with their current job.

The survey found 62%, or 2,870 people, were not happy in their work. Being paid too little was the top reason for their unhappiness, followed by tasks that are not clearly defined and do not match their skills, and having a bad relationship with their bosses.

When asked to describe their salary situation, about two-thirds, or 65%, said they felt they were overworked for the salary they received and that their wages were inadequate. Although 26% thought they received reasonable payment, only 9% felt they were paid enough and were in a good financial situation.

Asked what they do to alleviate their unhappiness, some 58% of fed-up employees said they looked for new jobs, 38% opted to spend time on leisure activities or hobbies, and the rest sought moral support from friends or talked to their bosses about their concerns.

In total, 38% of the respondents said they were happy with their job. The three main factors that they cited as making them content were the experience that they gained from work and being assigned challenging tasks; having good colleagues; and working with bosses who trust and value them in their work.

When I was working, one of the things that caused most unhappiness was the yearly appraisals, it always ended up as a farce with the bosses favourites getting paid more for doing the same job.

Yep that could get to you real fast.

I was fortunate in my field you got raises based on time of service. In my second career you were paid by the amount of work you got done. Private investigation so the number of billable hours you had. The more you worked the more you made.

I have been happy in almost all of the jobs I have had over the years including my current one. However, a job that I did not particularly like was unloading and loading boxcars from 11 at night until 7 in the morning in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan when it was -20 for 40 days in a row. Nevertheless, the cheques were always welcome.

I hated that shift. let alone the temps. But, it wasn't forever, just something you had to take your turn at.

OT hated work, so I gave it up. That didn't work out , so I went back to work. Now a week does not go by without the job being rewarding. Nowadays I prefer to work than chasing WFBs and drinking lager all day and night.
OK, OT has just lied.

I guess I've been lucky. Enjoyed most of my stops, and I was fortunate to have supervisors who knew how to get people to work WITH them instead of FOR them.

Had a few bum coaching stops -- programs not fulfilling their promises and/or contracts. But they weren't terribly intolerable.

In the end, I was so ready to retire in the last five years of being employed that even the prospect of almost doubling my pension for 5 more years of work wasn't enough to keep me around. Outta there.

Someone once said if you can find something you really enjoy doing that you can make money at you will never work another day in your life. I have been fortunate enough to do that and get paid really well for it also.

I feel very lucky worked as a public servant for 23 years running services for young people. I loved every minute of it Took a two year work break and moved to Thailand. In the two years I have helped my wife set up an English school. Have taken my redundancy this March and am now employed by the wife. Love teaching in our own school for it is so rewarding. I am only 51 plenty of work left in me yet. Thinking of setting up a skype English language service. Yes, before anyone asks I have all the necessary paper work, Visa's, work pertmit and the school is fully licensed.

Working in the Uk is a grind , but when I left to work in Asia in 2001 it did feel like I'd jumped out of the rat race, cheap cost of living , paying no tax and most expenses paid for. Now , 12 years later ,I'm looking forward to a long break and retirement in a couple of years when I'm 50.

What does worry me is what I'm going to do when I stop working , there is only so much golf you can play and the prospect of having a can of Singha in the hand at 10am every day becomes the real danger. We've all heard of and seen the consequences of that I'd imagine

My work can be difficult as there are 5 shifts of men and some are very competitve over other shifts and also trying to find any faults other shifts have done, there is a lot of talking behind other peoples backs and backbiting. Its stressful and i try to stay neutral and not get involved. Never had a cross word with anyone at work in the 5 and a half years ive been in the job.

I really want to work somewhere that i can travel to from Thailand , mining in Laos was the plan but its very difficult to get in , my next option is in the oil industry but ill have to spend cash on courses to get in and at the moment cant afford to.

If anyone can recommend any work it would be much appreciated. CV available on request.

Cheers :)
