Haven't posted in awhile, so a little update. Since opening our Facebook Page a month ago we've had a surprising number of Thai customers. I was reluctant to try it, but after seeing every one of my wife's friends posting on FB I thought why not. Turns out to be the easiest thing we've done to broaden our customer base.

There's a whole new Thai demographic out there... city dwelling Thai's with money and a taste for something different. I made my third sweep through Villa market and there was plenty of local shoppers. Certainly they weren't doing the Big-C weekly cartload shopping (even farangs don't do that at Villa!) but browsing for selected items, maybe for a recipe to try at home?

I think that any bar/restaurant that is currently aiming for the rather limited (in size and funds) farang market needs to embrace the local market to survive. Don't offer bog standard Thai dishes... there's plenty others doing that better and cheaper, but do try some select bistro-style or light-dinner menu items, either western or Asian. Thai's don't like big, 3-course meals such as the traditional Sunday roast. They eat like birds... several times a day! Accordingly, offer them wraps, dips, tacos, soups and salads with extras... stuff that's relatively cheap and quick to make, mixes up the flavours and service that makes want to come back as well as tell their friends.

@Tamada, so far our Spaghetti has been a big hit with the Thais. Jun makes her sauce a bit on the spicy side, so I guess that appeals to them. Also, our huge burgers are a novelty. We've even made pork burgers to order, and of course french fries are popular, along with being quick, easy, and profitable! We'll continue looking for other niche items as well and ALWAYS listen to our customers input.

Regarding Bisquick, yes, we have received a substantial supply. It's amazing how these closely garded secrets get out! This weekend we'll be offering our home made sausage gravy and biscuits from 9AM to noon. Maybe a regular item, depending on demand. Other breakfast items will be available until noon also, including optional hashbrown patties to go with your egg muffins! Pancakes will come later, after we can scope out some suitable toppings.

SONGKRAN SCHEDULE AND MENU

Starting tomorrow, Friday, our street will be an officially designated "walking street" (we've got a 5 page police notice to prove it!). The official days are 12 - 15 April, noon to 9:30PM. We will open our normal hours (9AM-10PM) Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and MONDAY (this is different).

WE WILL BE CLOSED TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NEXT WEEK (16 & 17 APRIL)

Our menu after noon during the holidays will only have 4 items:

Egg and Cheese Muffins with choice of Bacon, Ham, or our Home Made Sausage

Philly Cheese Steaks

JUMBO Chili Cheese Dogs

Nachos Grande

Of course the BAR will be open with plenty of Beer, Wine, Cocktails, and soft drinks. Lynchburg Lemonade on hand (Joe you listening?). And don't forget BUBBA'S BUCKET O' BEER, buy 6 domestic small bottles and get one free!

Yes, Rick, our Jumbo Chili Cheese Dog is pretty much a meal in itself, very popular!

However, in our never ending effort to come up with new ideas, we've discovered a new product available in Thailand:
pig-fish-is-really-pig-fish.jpg
Part pig, part fish, certain to be a healthy addition to your diet. Available as a burger, or "taco style" on a flour or corn tortilla!

Life is getting back to normal, after Songkran.

disclaimer: the "pig fish" is of course, a joke ;)

Now, if you combine that photo with those new 3D printers.... Are we looking at a new menu item, Bubba?

Was hoping you were right on this one, Dave, but just got this month's bill... 5,335 baht. Cost of living is definately going up. Hopefully we'll make up for it with our increasing business!

Some of you know I've been on a low carb/high protein diet since the first of the year (commonly know as the "Adkins Diet"). Well I'm happy to report I've lost 15 kilos, with a goal to lose 18 more. It's the only diet I've ever been able to maintain since it doesn't leave you hungry all the time.

Here's a little something Jun whipped up for me today, Tuna salad:

Just goes to show, if you want something that's not on the menu or specials board, ask, maybe Jun can make it for you!

We just made a fresh batch of our home made Salsa. It's got more "zing" to it than the commercially available stuff and of course nothing beats freshly made! It gets many favorable comments from our customers. Goes great on our Tacos. You can order beef, pork, chicken or fish on flour or corn tortillas. AND we offer sour cream for your tacos, somewhat rare for places in Thailand to do that!

Happy Labor Day. "May Day" in many other parts of the world. Many people not working today in Udon (government offices and banks open). Sunday, 5 May, is Coronation Day, cannot sell alcohol. So much for Cinco de Mayo  Was planning on having a couple Cadillac Margaritas* along with my Tacos (sans tortillas per my diet of course).

We may be taking a much needed vacation soon. Will post details when confirmed.

Bubba and Jun

* Regular Margarita with a shot of Grand Marnier added (available at Villa Market).

Today we celebrate our 1st year in business. It's been a real learning experience for both of us, neither having any background in the restaurant industry. For the most part we met our objectives since we only had modest goals. I would unequivocally say that the best part of doing this is all the new friends we both have made. So, a big THANK YOU to all our wonderful customers, past, present, and future.

Now we've earned a little vacation to the beach. We'll be closed this Sunday through next Thursday, 5 May - 9 May. We'll reopen Friday, 10 May. Thanks for your understanding and sorry for any inconvenience.
