Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season

Post by Brian Davis » April 29, 2013, 6:15 am

Well done Svein for listing the fixtures. I’ll mention that thaileaguefootball.com is an informative website. Lots of articles, many funny, and all fixtures listed, usually accurate although I notice that next week e.g. Amnat Charoen is listed as playing SEVEN times(including erroneously at Udon) over the weekend, so some test of fitness, travel arrangements and not least being in several places at one time! Email sent.
Mosquito – I’d suggest you watch this topic if you’re interested in catching any particular game. Dates and kick-off times are known to change. Alternatively, there’s usually a ‘popup’ on facebook.com/udfc.fanclub re next game, although this site is mainly in Thai.
Yet another amazing coincidence in my life, in breaking a journey back from a getaway, I stopped over in Chaiyaphum and find Udon is in town! Same thing happened in Loei too. Seriously, if I have to tolerate the shopping and eating, the family can spare me a couple of hours to see a game.
Sparse crowd, although 100+? Udon fans travelled and made themselves heard. First half a bit of a drag. Udon much better 2nd half, took control of the game really. I guess I noticed particularly that the Udon defence doesn’t give the opposition many chances. Two very similar goals – free kicks crossed into the packed goal area and Udon player (No 5 both times?) and headed deflection backwards, which leaves the keeper stranded. Nice to see the Club ‘owner’ sitting in with the fans.
I see Nong Khai beat Roi Et yesterday in the big game of the day and MAY have got the game completed before the heavens opened last night, IF the storm went that way. Udon entertain Nong Khai in a few weeks, so should be a crunch local derby.

Result Sunday: Udon Thani 1-0 Yasothon :D
The winning goal came after 82 minutes. Yasothon had 2 very big chances to equalise late on, but managed not to score in front of an almost open goal. :D
In injury time one of Yasothon`s African players kicked the ball far away in protest over a free-kick given against him and then pushed the refereee so he fell on his back, and was then showed the red card.

Next game is in the League Cup tomorrow against Samut Songkhram, no 15 in the Premier League. Kick-off 18.00.

UDFC won 2-1 after extra time on Wednesday night, and are through to the last 16 in the League Cup. Next round is scheduled to be played on June 5th. UDFC is one of only two teams from Div 2 left in the cup, and with the lower team getting home advantage in the draw, there`s a big chance of another home game. Would be fun with a visit of Muang Thong or Buriram. :D

Tomorrow it`s back to the league, with a trip to Surin.

Hi Svein

Thank you for keeping me/us up-dated within the local club and their acchievements. I appreciate your efforts and will back up UDFC's trip to compete with the usual upper class teams within Thailand. A good result in the cup - and possibly access to the 1/4 finals - will for sure result in a taste of stardust over our local heroes....
See u all at the local stadium for the next homematch

Didn't know that, Svein, just thought Udon was lucky in the draw! Quite a nice idea, actually, giving the smaller Club a chance of a bumper crowd and better chance of an upset. A 'big' team at home against smaller might not attract many fans.
Still not sure if the League Cup is used as a kind of secondary competition. Udon rested? a couple of the African guys, who would usually have played. Not sure about Samut Songkrahm, but I certainly noticed a few of real quality, particularly the wide forwards. Bit of a turnaround in the game, I thought. Udon was mostly run ragged in the 2nd half of normal time and I could see only one winner at that point. Yet the quick goals in extra time and Samut being down to 10 men, resulted in Udon moving/passing again. Fortunately, what proved to be Samut's consolation goal came so late, that there wasn't too much time left for Udon to 'wobble'.
Incidentally, I read that Buriram was going to use only reserve/fringe players away at Kalasin - but still managed a 5-0 win!.

And, I thought Yasothon gave Udon a really close, tough game. The manager's decision to substitute Joseph, who wasn't getting much joy against strong Yasothon defenders and move Omogba into the central striker position changed the game, I thought. The referee had IMO an excellent game and left with no choice on the sending off. Sometimes a fine line between a player using his body legally to try and gain an advantage, or fouling. This is what I felt the Yasothon defender got upset about, as he was penalised several times, when a free kick might had been given the other way.

Big local derby coming up! UDFC will play Nong Khai on Saturday May 18th at 1800. Both teams has 24 points in 3rd and 4th place in the table, 2 and 3 points behind Ubon and Roi Et who currently has the two promotion play-off places.

I'll just add that Nong Khai has yet to lose in the League this season having won 6 and drawn 6 of the matches played. And in those games, only 3 goals have been conceded(14 scored). Udon has a 24 For, 10 Against record. So, an interesting match-up and hopefully good game.

The draw for the last 16 in the League Cup was made today. UDFC will play at home to Songkhla United, currently number 8 in TPL, on June 5th.
I`ve also been told today that this round has 2 legs, if true the away game will be at a later date. It`s scheduled as a 1-legged round in TPL`s season schedule, but in Thailand anything can change on short notice. :?

EDIT:
It`s only 1 leg, so it will only be the homegame vs Songkhla.

The local derby against Nong Khai finished goalless ,,, a resonable game which on chances made Udon should have won ,,, played in bad (wet) conditions on a terrible pitch ,,,,,,,, alas the eccentric midget referee was worse than both the weather and surface put together ..

Good traveling support for the Nong Khai side .

Next game is away to Mahasarakham United at 1630 on Saturday. MU are 10th in the table, 8 points behind UDFC in 3rd place. MU have only played 3 of 13 games at home this season, with 5 points and goaldifference 1-0 in those 3 games.

UDFC lost at Mahasarakham this weekend and dropped to 4th place in the table, 1,2 and 5 points behind top 3. Last season UDFC got 33 points in the 1st leg of the season, and before this season`s last game in the 1st leg, at home to Sisaket, they have only 25 points.

June will be a very big month, with homegames against number 11, 8 and 1 in the league + a cup game:
2/6 Udon Thani vs Sisaket United
5/6 Udon Thani vs Songkhla United (League Cup)
16/6 Udon Thani vs Roi Et United
24/6 Udon Thani vs Loei City
Hopefully they are still up there fighting for promotion at the end of June.

And a funny story from yesterday. Yasothon played at home to Mukdahan, and were leading 1-0 when the referee gave a penalty to Mukdahan in the 90th minute. Yasothon then left the pitch in protest against the decision, turned off the floodlights and went home.

A post from UDFC on their FB-page today says (I think) that they have problems paying the players salaries. That`s what I understand from Google translate anyway. Not good news for a team trying to get promotion.

Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season

Post by Brian Davis » May 31, 2013, 6:22 am

Has anyone any insight into what sort of money players might expect in division 2?

It seems Thai Clubs struggling to pay players is not an uncommon event. One would imagine foreign players enjoy rather more than Thai. It was noticeable that Nong Khai appear not to have any foreign players or, at least, none have featured in the games I've seen. Perhaps they are, what's the expression, cutting the cloth to fit?

I did have some contact with an ex-Udon player, African, whose new team had money concerns - settled now, I think. He had 'travelled' a bit and suggested he'd been paid between 30-60,000 baht (or equiv), presumably per month???, in Thailand and at other Asian Clubs. Things like accommodation costs may have been added. I've no idea if there were clauses like 'dependent on appearances' etc.

Through a friend, I know there's a very young player in a division 1 first team squad (hasn't played yet for 1st team) who's paid 25,000 baht.

One way or another, even if one takes the lower rates, quite big money to find monthly without rich owners, sponsorship and healthy gate money. It doesn't seem Udon has secured a sponsor (at least one paying enough) to warrant the name on shirts.
