There's a third case. Realists retiring who just want more bang for their pension buck. They aren't running from anything, and they know what they have here.
No country is perfect. There are things in Thailand that make life a little bit cumbersome or irritating at times, but when I weigh the satisfaction I get from from living here against those incidents, I'm still better off here. Adapt, assimilate or be miserable.
