Papua New Guinea, whats it like ?

Post by SJP17 » June 22, 2013, 5:59 pm

Hi Folks

Does anyone have any experience of living or working in Papua New Guinea ?

I applied for a job there with a large multi-national company and just interested to know more about the place in case i get offered a job :)

I noticed after doing a flight search that it is really expensive to fly to from BKK and usually the flights go threw Phillipines. So i am thinking the jobs must either be for locals or as a relocation.

Any advice or information is much appreciated

Cheers

Stuart

its rough and wild..
dont go wandering in the mountains with your girlfriend, or you might get shot in the gut with a nasty big arrow or two, and left to die, while some caveman rodgers your girlfriend..I only say that because it happened to one our countrymen and his missus a year or two back..There are people up in them hill that have never seen a white fella, or white woman.. I have met some nice Kumuls before, but them hill tribesmen oyiiiiiiiiiiiiii...its machete's, and bow and arrows, and there's no law up there, and they know how to get wasted

SJP17 what do you do for employment

Personal security is the biggest issue but may depend on exactly where you will locate. Provide more info on what industry you are in and do you know the location?

Barney, I was trying to be gentle with him, and not to offend any of our PNG listeners'..
From the Shetlands to Moro Camp PNG couldnt be more extreme..

So unless you are the intrepid adventurous type, looking for a small boring self contained life in the highlands of PNG, surrounded by fuzzie wuzzies with bones thru thier noses, and a crazied beetle juice look in thier eyes, then better to cast your eye further afield me thinks...but thats only my opinion...I think you would be safer on a Shetland fishing boat in a force 9 gale..

if you google Moro Camp, or life in PNG you can get some first hand knowledge from other western people camped there..

SPJ17

Moro camp is relatively safe, plenty of security , most of the problems with the land holders are now solved and history. I have stayed at that camp a few times on stop overs when flying out of my location from tari airport. Moro camp is a hub airport for the PNGLNG project for Exxon or in PNG called Esso highlands, it is also the base for the heavy lift choppers 92 blades type) which carry supplies to various camps and work sites where vehicles cannot carry the loads. I lived in a camp nearbye about 15 minutes by chopper.
You fly direct up the mountain on a "Dash 8" from Port moresby airport about 1.5 hrs or if the plane is travelling in the reverse then Port moresby to Tari tairport hen on to Moro. They are all dirt strips. Moro has a very large group of expats staying there in a number of different camps. The french contractors are based there in their own camp and are building the 150km pipeline through the jungle from the gasplant at hides to the coast to join up to the 400km pipe undersea to the port moresby LNG processing plant.

You will be required to take malaria medication constantly( either larium weekly or malaron daily).
The R&R rotation should be taken into account as long straight periods there can be taxing on the mind.

In all honesty I would give it a go, life is full of adventure. You only live once!!!!

Flights from britian will come through singapore and then a airniugini flight sing to port moresby, which leaves at 11.30 pm each night.

Good luck

yes for all my negativity on this blurb, if I was looking to get into the oil business, which might later then see me get a job closer to Thailand, or in Thailand /Laos, and thereby closer to the one one spoons with, then I might go to Moro, or is that tomorrow..hahaha..only if they paid me ruddy well, and some of the those frenchies Barney talks about were women...good luck SPJ.....you dont happen to know Benny the Hat from the Shetlands / Great Barrier Island

Can only comment in respect to Halliburton, a huge corporation that takes very good care of their employees. I worked for one if their former subsidiaries, KBR, in Iraq for 2 years. People who sustained injuries were given absolutely first class medical care and follow up. If you can get your foot in the door with them you should have a job as long as you wish to work.
Every day I wake up is a good day.

As an aside, there is a book written by Mitchell Zuckoff named Lost in Shangri-La. It's a true story about a U.S. Army plane (C-47) loaded with 24 U.S. Army personnel flying over the island of New Guinea that crashed in an uncharted region inhabited by a prehistoric tribe! Not my words, but the author. Anyway, great story on the rescue ops for the survivors and history of the 'modern day' discovery of the wilds of NG.
Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast, hit 'em with the one they don't expect, and just keep hitting.

Thanks for all the replies good and negative

I guess ill just have to wait and see how the application goes, i dont have a commercial drivers licence so i would imagine priority will go to the applicants that meet all the criteria but you never know.

Ive also applied for jobs at a local gas plant which is being built and registered an interest with loads of other companies, but if you know of anyone thats looking for a multi skilled maintenace tech then im the guy :D

Cheers

P.S Last time i was on a Shetland fishing boat i dropped 16 pounds of weight in 12 days, gutting fish and constantly throwing up, it was hellish, then again id prefer that to ending up in someones cooking pot ;)
