Hitler Fried chicken

Post by FrazeeDK » July 11, 2013, 9:05 am

Hitler chic.... note correction at bottom stating the restaurant is in Ubon Ratchatani vice Bangkok and the owner has now changed the name to H_ler http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/07/08/kfc ... n-mostpop1 and http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... w-tie.html

For those of you who were here in Thailand many years ago you'll remember "Darky" toothpaste with a representation of a smiling black man with top hat.. That's morphed into "Darlie" toothpaste. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darlie

Can't say the Thais are particularly politically correct or perhaps just blind to some of the stuff they do...

Hitler Fried chicken

This is a very old story. Some misinformed journalist came up with the story a short while ago and after that several newspapers just copied that story as news.

The restaurant, named UEU, opened in 2009 in Ubon and only had a logo which showed the face of Hitler. Years later, in 2011, they changed their name into Hitler, only for a short while, then changed their name in h-Ler the logo first changed and then disappeared. This was already a couple of years ago. The photo of the restaurant when it had the name Hitler, which is shown in the media (there is only one photo), is a couple of years old.

I think that the most terrible thing here is not the name of some small restaurant (two years ago) in some remote part of Isaan, but the role of the international media, that blindly copy each other's mistakes without checking for facts.

And about the image. Was John Cleese politically correct when he did an imitation of Hitler with Monty Python? Or Mel Brooks, or Charlie Chaplin?

Frankie: "And about the image. Was John Cleese politically correct when he did an imitation of Hitler with Monty Python? Or Mel Brooks, or Charlie Chaplin?"

Good question. But to me there seems to be a difference between comedy depicting people like Hitler or bin Laden and a chicken company plainly using the KFC patterns (with Hitler implanted) to promote their product.
Seems to me most comedies that depict folks like Adolph or bin Laden (SNL skits) don't depict them as heroes or saviors, but more as buffoons.
The link below provides some insight into Jewish thinking about comedies depicting Hitler.

On the Darkie toothpaste note: We bought a sparkling white dust mop in Ngeesoon a few weeks ago. No label on the package to say where it's made.

Who's making Hitler into a hero or savior then? Only in your mind?
In Japan (and now also in Thailand) it's only some decoration, most don't even know who hitler was. Like the face of Mao and Che Quevara appeares on t-shirts in the west, while nowadays many people who wear these t shirts don't even know who these people were. The only purpose is decoration, style. Last weekend I saw some girl in Bangkok wearing a communist cap with red star. Nowadays it doesn't mean anything, it's only some decoration or style.

Only some old people who are stuck in the past, make a problem out of it.

In the west you can also easily walk around with a Stalin t-shirt. Nobody will complain about it.

Why is that? Stalin was a dictator who assassinated three times more people than Hitler did.

Oh wait, I know, Stalin was one of our allies. Ooops. In 1945 he was one of our heroes and saviors.

A discussion of that topic appeared in the New York Review of Books a couple of years ago. http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archive ... tion=false

There are different articles and different researches which show different numbers. However, that is not the issue here.

My point was: If someone were to open a coffee shop named Stalin or Mao, or wears a T-shirt with a portrait of Stalin, why would it not be international news (who cares?). But, if some small restaurant in some corner of Isaan uses the portrait of Hitler (for a short while 2 or 3 years ago), why is that suddenly international news?

By the way, just an other example. How many people were starved to death in British concentration camps in South-Africa during the Boer wars? Maybe the already mentioned dictators thought that was a good example of how to eliminate people, just lock them up and let them starve to death. The UK gave a good example for others to follow.

The thing about history is often that the guys who win will write the history books. Often they exaggerate some parts of history and forget to mention other parts of history.

We live in a new century now. Today a girl can wear a communist cap with a red star in Bangkok without being arrested. Is she a communist? I don't think so, it's just fashion. Fourty years ago she probably would have been arrested or shot. Times change.

Yes, of course. That was apparent. Just thought that people might also be interested in a somewhat academic discussion of that issue.
