Can anyone at the Forum inform me about his/ or hers experience of going to Singapore? The prize of food/drinks/accommodation for example, compared to Thailand. Friend of mine said that he "heard" that it was as expensive as any major city in Europe. He also said it wasnดt a safe place for Westerners since they are muslims etc. Well, he is the neonazi type, so I am not sure if I can rely on his subjectivity.
Since I will be staying for 3 months now in Thailand and will have to do the VISA running thing it might be worth going there in January next year?

I am a regular visitor to Singapore. Keep out of the redlight district, its not near town centre anyway, its as safe as anywhere these days.Prices, food more than Thailand but not same as london. Department store shopping, good choice , price as Oxford Street. Electrical goods, buy in malls, good selection, a little cheaper than Bangkok. Genuine brand watches bargain prices.Taxi's not expensive but watch for destinations in town centre, have road peek time tolls, they can run away with the bill.Use underground train.
Thai embassy, weird operating hours normally meaning 3 days before completion of visa. Not very friendly or co-operative for non-o visa's
The people very friendly, no sign of racial tension at all. If into girly places you'll find there nearly all Thai girls charging way over Thai prices. wait till you get back.
Sightseeing: recommended, Night Safari, a train ride through the jungle in the dark. Eating out; Quayside for ambience and atmosphere.
I like it because of the change from Bangkok, its lovely and clean. If looking for female company, most hotels have a disco or popular bar.![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Singapore is one of my favourite places. Plenty to do and see. Sentosa Island
used to house huge guns pointing out to the sea. Now a theme park a pleasant place to take TW/TG. The bird park is another good day out.
Street food in Singapore is served up in "Hawker" centres government controlled food stalls that are spotless. Try the satay if you visit Singapore.
Very easy to get around with the excellent MRT underground railway and bus network. Hotels are a little more expensive than Bangkok, beer is very expensive, with punitive taxes piled on top.
The people in Singapore are very friendly, most people speak English.
Have to agree with Val, eating out on the Quayside by the Merlion.
All those original shophouses by the Quay are the only ones left in Singapore, most were torn down for redevelopment.
For a treat, take your TW/TG to Raffles Hotel for afternoon tea, and afterwards try a Singapore Sling in Harry's Bar. You'll have to book for afternoon tea. Well worth it.
If your a photographer, Singapore have a better range of cameras than Bangkok.

I read this with some interest but have a few questions.
The way I understand it I can fly from the US to Singapore, then catch a flight to Udon and bypass Bangkok. Correct?
My question is; do I need a visa for Singapore as well as Thailand? And if I have an approved nonimm o-a for retirement will they give me my year extension at Udon airport on arrival or do I get that later at Nhon Khai?
Has Udon airport been fully upgraded to an international airport which means that it is a port of entry into Thailand?
I had heard that this might happen but didn't know that is was a done deal.
I wonder if it would be possible to ship house-hold goods directly to Udon as well or is that being to optimistic? I feel that anything to bypass BKK in any way is a definite plus.
Thanks
dcas

If I decided to visit Singapore, can I get a "Re-entry Stamp" on my passport? This is so that I don't have to go through all the samethings I went through for my non-o visa, which I have extended twice. I would like to visit Singapore since the flights are pretty cheap. Just want to make sure I didn't have to go and get the 3 month non-o visa and then have to extend it, since the present visa extention is still valid.

Pops, a re-entry visa, is just that, permission to come back on your current visa. It doesn't replace it or extend it in any way. as I think it costs the same as a new visa, if you haven't got long to go before expiry you might just as well get a new one in Singapore. you could even time your trip to coincide with your present visa's expiry.
Will it be a holiday or are you taking the wife?

Val, I would be dreaming if I went for a holiday with out the TW
. I would also be looking a the knife tooo!!!!!!
Geez I aint stubid just crazy (a little).
After seeing the prices for the flight to Singapore, was thinking maybe going there for a weekend, leave on Friday and return on Monday. I wouldn't think of not going with out the TW (yea right!!!
) LOL.
I am just worried if I leave Thailand for a bit of relaxation in Singapore, I might have to redo all the things I did initially for my visa here. I would like to see Singapore, since I nor the TW has been to Singapore.
Val have Phorn give a call to the wife. I'm sure the TW will get all the do's and don'ts in Singapore (don't have her mention the night market [-o< ). LOL Just PM me so I can find a nice place to stay (cheap) and what to look for as far as food is concerned. I read they have some really great crab dishes over there. (don't stop by, you know when the TW's get together, a short time ends up a very long time)

Pops,
get a re-entry stamp in your passport at AEK immigration, monday and wednesday I think, 1000 baht single, 3800 multiple. Just got a multiple in bkk last week on my way back here. You will need one photo of your monkey face though....
Unfortunately I booked Udon-bkk-sin on Thai Air Asia before this announcement.
Food: is it crab curry or crab chilli??? absolutely delicious and laksa, a delicious eat-soup.
Can anyone recommend a decent-not-too expensive hotel? I used to stay in the Marina Mandarin on companys expense, a tad too much for my retired budget ...
