Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season
+1 from me.
I don't know enough about Thai or local football to contribute to the discussions, but I am happy to read & learn so keep up the good work.

Another local derby coming up. I think many fans will take the trip to Nong Bua...
Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season
I won`t comment on the amateurs at UDFC who decided on how the tickets were being split up and sold/given away for the game vs Buriram on Wednesday, but instead focus on the remaining leagueseason.
There are only 7 games left of the season and four teams are in the running for the promotion play-off.
Roi Et is on top with 48 points and a game in hand, with Ubon in 2nd place with 44 points. UDFC has 43 points and Nong Khai 39. Other teams need at least a miracle to get in to the top 2.
There are some BIG games coming up until mid September. I think Roi Et will still be on top when the season ends, so I will look at Ubon and Udon, as only a point keeps them apart today. When looking at the remaing games I think it will be very close between the two. The floodlight failure in Udon early in the season might be what decides 2nd place. Ubon should win the next 2 games, but then they get 4 big games and hopefully they will drop a few points there. I`m worried about Udon`s trip to Kalasin coming weekend, after the midweek game vs Buriram, but they should then win the next 3 before the big games at the end. One thing is for sure, though, it will be exciting!

The only news I get about UDFC is from you Svein, so if you stop the info there will be none. Keep this topic flowing, it's more or less the only one I read.

Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season
Well, I’ll contribute here, if only that it was a special occasion, perhaps the biggest in Udon FC’s history.
Arriving there nearly two hours before scheduled kick off, I immediately realized I wasn’t early enough. Cars and people everywhere, including five or six ‘away’coaches, all decked out in Buriram trim, which was an immediate indication of the enormous gap in finances between the two Clubs. No chance to sample the atmosphere outside and seemingly I needed to be there the day before to have got an ‘orange’ seat. Standing at the back of the covered section was the best I could hope for. Incidentally, having previously looked into the changing rooms whilst arriving very early for ticket sales, I would have liked to see the Buriram players’ reaction to the very, very basic facilities.
Anybody in Udon will know of the tremendous storm which started around 5 pm with very heavy rain. (Excuse my dislike of manufactured support, but there was some satisfaction for me in that, having got soaked when I went to Buriram – no covered area allocated to away fans in the sizeable stadium- the away fans were now suffering a severe drenching, including the cheerleader trying to force TWO megaphones in her mouth!). The pitch was soon waterlogged, with surface water showing in places, particularly nearside. There was obviously pressure NOT to postpone the game with all he hassle that would involve, although it appeared the officials were more or less left alone to reach a decision. We had the ridiculous, rather embarrassing sight of ballboys trying to remove surface water with tabletops. I’m not joking. Amazing Thailand! Anyway, with the heavy rain relenting and some water seeping away, the game got underway about an hour late. In retrospect, a decision to go ahead was probably correct because it wasn’t a complete farce, although what the ball did, at times, was a lottery. Credit to both teams for ‘getting on with it’.
One might have thought the conditions would benefit Udon, but IMO, Buriram actually seemed to adapt far better, a combination of tactics and ability to lift the ball from the dodgy surface. It seemed every longish, wide ball out of Buriram’s defence found a forward, stretched Udon, whilst Udon’s attempts to run with the ball on this surface was going to be difficult. An early Buriram goal, although some suspicion of offside, was just what Udon didn’t need and certainly quietened the Udon fans enthusiasm. Buriram scored again 2nd half. Buriram had the edge throughout, Udon having very few opportunities, although Udon had the compensation of a late goal. So ended Udon 1 - Buriram 2 (1-3 on aggregate) Udon can be happy with the cup run (I think it was two Premiership Clubs and one Div 1 Club beaten) and although a cliché, back to the more important promotion effort.
Incidentally, although the Udon storm seemed severe and widespread, back home 35 kms away, not a drop of rain. Never mind, got it this early morning instead!

Mind you, the ten or so Miss Buriram girls who paraded around the pitch in Buriram WERE stunners.

UDFC won at Kalasin yesterday, while Ubon only managed a draw at Sakhon Nakhon. That means that UDFC got into 2nd place, one point ahead of Ubon. There is now only 6 games left of the leagueseason, and both UDFC and Ubon will play 4 of those at home. They will also come head to head in Ubon in a few weeks.Svein66 wrote:August 10+11:

After Nong Khai`s loss this weekend, they are now 7 points behind UDFC, and don`t have any realistic hope of getting to the promotion play-off, so I have removed their games above.
The promotion play-off is 2 groups of 6 teams each playing each other as a league, meaning 10 games each (5 home, 5 away). The best 2 teams in every region goes to the play-off, except for the southern region where only the winner is qualified. No 2 in South will play the best 3rd placed team in the 2 northern regions for the last play-off place. North currently has the best 3rd placed team with 47 points (Lampang), while North/East has 45 points (Ubon).
If UDFC gets a play-off place, we will get an extended season until Christmas.
The 2 best teams in each play-off group are promoted to Division 1.

Udon Thani FC - The 2013-season
I'll jump in for Svein - it's 6 p.m. on Sunday. Be careful in future though, it can sometimes be a Saturday.
If this is your first visit and you want to be under cover, best get there early, I'd suggest at least 40? minutes before ko. The only covered seating (concrete steps) is in the 'highway' stand side. Depends what the weather looks like, but that can change rapidly. If you hoped to sit one of the few basic plastic seats, you might need an even earlier arrival. Once you've a ticket, got your arm stamped, you can go in/come out once you've safeguarded a space somehow.
Very welcome win for Udon, but appears to have come very late, although I haven't confirmed that. I hope Svein is correct that Nong Khai is out of the equation. Svein didn't mention that leaders Roi Et won 8-1, yes eight, at bottom club Mukdahan. The top three all have a mix of what, from the table, appear difficult and easy games, although Ubon v Udon rather stands out as a real 'crunch'.
