High Speed Rail: BKK to Chiang Mai Starts When?
Mention has been made previously in various news outlets like Xinhua and NY Times that construiction on a high speed rail link from BKK to Chiang Mai was due to start this year.
Any of you out there in the trenches see any indication this has begun or is set to begin, or is all still in the talk stages?, e.g. it's been approved but no one's actually done anything.

to be more clear, here's a map and article from NY Times on the subject.

Note Kunming to Hanoi is already in progress. And that Kunming to Nong Khai is seriously being considered.

The new airport took what 40 years? I doubt very much that we will see a high speed rail in our life time. Maybe our grand kids.
No man has a good enough memory to be a succesful liar.

The railway map makes Bangkok look more like Nakon Nowhere, the new high tech deep sea port at Dawei in Burma will take lots of shipping away from Bangkok.

I don't understand your reasoning Prenders. Why would Burma take Business from Bangkok ?? Most of the Shipping from Bkk is export to the World, Rice, Cars, Seafood etc ??Prenders88 wrote:The railway map makes Bangkok look more like Nakon Nowhere, the new high tech deep sea port at Dawei in Burma will take lots of shipping away from Bangkok.

Dawei is more direct for shipping low quality Chinese goods, to the World especially Europe. You dont have to sail round Malaysia, saving fuel, time, and money. It won't be long before you see the Japanese car companies moving their production there as well, no flooding, and cheaper wage rates.Aardvark wrote:I don't understand your reasoning Prenders. Dual-track rail route from Bangkok to Nong Khai is scheduled to be finished in 2019.
The high-speed train from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima should be finished in 2020. It will cost the double per kilometer in Thailand than in Spain.

can't see how Dawei will steal shipping from Bangkok when Dawei's projected connection for shipping is through Thailand.. It will add, not detract from Thai commerce..

Be many years before Burma can compete with Thailand, you just dont build a car factory and sell cars abroadPrenders88 wrote:Dawei is more direct for shipping low quality Chinese goods, to the World especially Europe. High Speed Rail: BKK to Chiang Mai Starts When?
I doubt you will be seeing a genuine high speed railway for many years , the double tracking of the existing railway will be first. From breaking ground on what will be quite substantial and expensive civil's work dont expect a running railway for around 6 to 7 years
Most of the Asian countries on Chinas dream high speed route to Singapore nod their heads when China offers to build the Railway for them , but in reality it will be a long time coming if at all
Anything over 200kph constitutes high speed , so dont be expecting a bullet train if it is built
I have 25 years in the industry the last 11 in asia , and the Thai routes have bee about to start since 2002

Two sites slated for high-speed trains

Online news:
The Transport Ministry is considering two plots of land owned by the Treasury Department in Nakhon Ratchasima and Nakhon Sawan provinces for development as high-speed train stations and new towns.
The 541-rai area in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima could be used to serve the northeastern train line and another location covering 3,385 rai in Muang district of Nakhon Sawan has potential for a station and a new centre for the northern route, Transport Minister Chadchat Suttipunt said.
The land in Pak Chong is used by the army for the manufacture of military equipment and the other plot in Nakhon Sawan is occupied by its Veterinary and Remount Department.
The government plans to build the first phase of the Nong Khai line to Nakhon Ratchasima while the first sector of the Chiang Mai line will run to Phitsanulok province.
Mr Chadchat said the train project will mainly use land owned by the Treasury Department and try to minimise acquiring private land for the project. A solution for the private property would be to reshape the land to the benefit of the owner and the project, he added.
A sub-committee has been formed to study city and economic development in the areas where the high-speed trains pass. The study could be completed in a month, he added. The panel comprises officials from the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, the Public Works and Town and Country Planning Department, the Treasury Department and the State Railway of Thailand.
Kiattisak Chantra, deputy director-general of the Public Works and Town and Country Planning Department, said land owners sacrificing part of their land for the project could benefit from the increased value of their property after the train line is built.
The high-speed train service is the main project under the 2.2 trillion baht infrastructure fund proposed by the government.
