28th Annual Kings Cup Takraw tourney at Central

Was down at Central Mall today and noticed a number of monstrously tall guys with "Australian Takraw Team" down in Top C.. I asked one fellow what was going on and he informed me that this week there is a 29 team international Takraw tournament in the Central Mall Exposition Hall on the 4th floor.. This a a royally sponsored "individual's Cup" tournament now in its 28th year. Good catch for Udon Thani.. Its a wonder there hasn't been more publicity.

Posters have been up around town for a few months....and Svein66 tipped off the forum a few months ago.

Until Monday morning this week I had no idea what Takraw really was. Now I know all about Hoops and Doubles, tomorrow also the team competition starts. Great atmosphere and top sport, at least when most South and East Asian teams compete. If you like to try something else, give it a try. Attendance free, but in particular when one of the Thai teams play the hall is packed!

Here are some photos I shot today. Just a phone cam so the quality is so so, but you get at least an impression.

It`s a wonder if you haven`t seen all the posters along the roads/streets in, and outside of, Udon Thani. It could not have been promoted much better than it has.

arrghghg... never saw a single one.. I tend to focus on my driving when going downtown through that finely flowing traffic... Funny I never noticed Svein's postings through the summer....

I went along to the opening ceremony to give a friend support as she was one of the MC's. Glad I went, watching the Hoops Vietnam beating Brazil. Entertaining to watch. Give it a go well worth it.

For those interested: today (Wednesday) at 3:45 PM the finals for the Doubles will start, with both Thai Men and Thai Women playing simultaneous at court 3 and 4. Expect a spectacle.

Make sure you're early if you like a seat, maybe the USA- CAM final starting at 3:00 PM can keep your busy while watching.
(Note: Doubles have been played in various 'divisions', Thailand plays in the top divisions, most Western teams play in 1st or 2nd division.)
