Beer Price Rise - Over 10%!!

Post by Bandung_Dero » September 23, 2013, 6:24 am

2 surprises yesterday, Mom and Pop selling Leo at 570 where the distributor was 580 :-k.

AND Eddies making so much money out of his bar he can afford to fill his fish pond with bottled water, says the town water is killing them! Nothing to do with the nip of Scotch he gives em each day. :-$

Eddies price has been 100 baht ever since his rent was doubled overnight, earlier this year.

The good news is that, despite the (likely) 15% price rise for Leo, his price will remain the same.

The even better news is that there are other options in Ban Dung, and no-one is forced to drink at Eddies - but I haven't noticed any diminishing (in a quantitative sense :D) of his clientele.

Price settling down now the extortionists have made there killing. 568 baht for Leo in Big C. Still a big rise though, but i guess they have to find the money to pay for the rice and rubber.

Rick, They are all still extorting unless someone can confirm the 10% tax is supposed to be on the retail price and not the wholesale price. The original leo in most shops was 495 now 568. Little bit more than 10% even on retail.

Cigarettes have gone up at least 5 bht a pack in the local shop but not in makro today, still at the old price.

Our local shop has done their dash with me as i have given her a chance to be reasonable with her price rises( now 15bht more than makro ) and it appears she wants her customers to pay directly for their large concrete drain pipes being installed across her property on the main road.

My local 7/11 has not had any Thai beer since I have been back.
Today fridges full..
4 packs of small Leo in cans -144 baht. From memory these were 129 baht just before I left - so a 15 baht or 11.6%
The surprise (to me) was that they also had 4 packs of small Singer cans for 145 baht. So only a baht a pack dearer.
I have no idea what the Singer was before but I can't believe that there was only a baht difference then...

Yes but how come the price in Presha has gone up by 15 baht a bottle, probably the same in other places although 1 shop in U.D town only up 5 baht. Tax hike is only a part of the cost of a bottle, case of O.K guys Farang will pay. Welcome to the land of smiles.

If everybody stopped drinking beer for a couple of months as a protest maybe they would reconsider their ripoffs

Indeed kubo ,,,, that would really make the powers that be take note cos of the lost revenue from booze taxes ,,, its a fact the world over ALL GOVERNMENTS when needing to boost their dwindling treasury funds the first thing they hit are the addictive products like smokes and booze ,,,, sad but true ... its all part of the game and usually after the general consumers blustering things quieten down and its back to the norm ....

I dont drink Thai beers etc so cant comment on any increases ie bottle prices on the ground ,, tho i do know a few of the imported suppliers have been able to swallow the increases by getting better deals in the country of origin to compensate ,, exactly what has happened with reference to the products i will be dealing with .

Thai laws ref compulsary VAT on booze is a pain in the bottom as well ... also way more difficult and expensive to get an Alcohol distribution , storage and sales license now ,,, i know cos just done it .... again its easy revenue for the treasury .

This new round of alcohol sin tax needs to be repealed. My favorite 1 ltr bottle of Kentucky Bourbon went from 550 B up to 700 B. The shop keepers said the price increase is due to the tax rate.

I for one think it's time we boycott the purchase of alcohol products. Imagine the outcries from shop keepers, restaurants and bars if we all drank water instead of our favorite beverage.

Any ideas how to start an effective boycott ? Maybe we could start by not purchasing alcohol on one day per week? Friday or Saturday might be a good start?
