Udon map type website set up.

Post by nel123 » October 8, 2013, 4:14 pm

Would anyone be able to advise me on an udonmap type website to set up. I'm really after some sort of set up and running costs. I know you can get website built for next to nothing and websites which run into thousands! If anyone out there would be able to guesstimate costs I would really appreciate it. (Website would have nothing to do with the udon area) many thanks in advance

Udonmap is a directory/forum hybrid, it's really rather good. You could start with a directory based website and add the forum once you have users.
Wordpress is the easiest way to set up this sort of thing by yourself and themeforest has plenty of premium themes to choose from (costs range from $15-75 per theme). Geoplaces from templatic.com is pretty good.
If you know about hosting etc this could be the way to go or you could get a designer involved to do it for you. Prices can range from a couple of hundred into the thousands (pounds).
Others start with the forum (udonmap uses phpBB prosilver) and this can be free for the software but the real costs are to time and moderators. (I don't have much experience with setting up forums, but when I have it's a lot of hassle!)
I don't know much about what your experience level is with websites, so I hope this helps somewhat...

I believe Udonmap is built using Joomla! Joomla! is an excellent content management system for websites and not too difficult to set up. Go to http://www.joomla.org/ for more information.

I have to give you full blast on this one, godaddy is the worst hosting service for a webmaster.
I have personal experience with them, they lost or erased my whole website off their servers, it took over 30 minutes on the phone with the stupid ponytails. End result: they wanted $150 to dig the E-commerce site of mine off their tape.

I told them they suck and I closed down my account and demanded a refund which I got, then I moved to another host.

Bottom line is if you dont have a personal experience and depend on what you know as advertised on TV or the net, you shouldnt give advise about something you dont know about.

My dear good little friend...I own several hundred domains and have several active websites. I do, however, agree you should not advise about something you don't know about. Blaming your site's failure on Godaddy is a very WEAK cop out to not making your own periodic backups independent of Godaddy.

All it takes is a freely available FTP client to download it once per week.

Godaddy does a backup to a folder in the root and they also do their own system backups. Even still, they tell you in the hosting agreement that it's not their fault if they don't have your backup. Not understanding that is also a failure on the part of the person responsible for your site...and I'm taking a wild guess that person is you.

Cheers, mate!

I am quite educated and skilled in and about many things. I am not a website "expert", but I know enough to hold my own with genuine experts and delegate accordingly to get what I want. Management 101.

I won't defend ago daddy's track record, but they didn't become the biggest because they piss off customers. I'd still be willing to wager their happiness to pissed off ratio is still quite favorable. A few hundred million smilies to a few hundred thousand frownies. Still, that's darn good all things considered.

Customers are always 100% faultless because the customer is always right.

Cheers!

Godaddy is'nt the biggest hosting comapany in the world doe, they are the biggest registrar when it comes to domainnames.

When you choose your host, think about where will your visitors come from, Thiland? Then you need to have a host with good peering in that region. No one likes a slow website.

Building a website like udonmap is a walk in the park, managing the directory on the other hand can be harder.

in my business when people start talking about themselves they are full of themselves and I have learned to not believe them.
