Got a late start on the beef stew due to a technical difficulty last night (dodgy wiring, TiT). It's in the cooker now and should be ready after about 2PM and until it lasts. If it's a hit, we'll do it again. Should look something like this:

Many a recipe for various tastes, just depends on your preferences. To me, adding corn and peas (or beans) makes it what many would call "Cowboy Stew", but that's usually made with ground beef as well. We used chunks of sirloin.

Just had a sample of ours... DELICIOUS. No teeth needed to eat this beef!

BEEF STEW... SOLD OUT!

And we're out of beef to make new pot. Will go to market tomorrow and have fresh batch ready for the weekend. If it continues to be popular we'll make it a regular menu item, at least through the winter months.

On tomorrow's menu, by popular demand, Buffalo Wild Wings... well actually this time they're "little drummies". More meat on the bone. Seasoned with our in house made "Three Mile Island" hot sauce. Available in 6 piece or 10 piece servings.

Also, another pot of Beef Stew will be simmering overnight and will be ready to serve first thing tomorrow.

Loy Khratong @ Bubba's Bar & Grill (Sponsor)

This Sunday is Loy Khratong. We will be celebrating and watching the beautiful display in Nong Prajak same as last year... hopefully without the torential rain storm that put a real damper on things. Again, a free Khratong with any tab of 300b or more, or can be purchased for 30b. Jun's family, including her 86 year old grandmother, spend all day making these. Plenty of parking in the former night plaza's nicely paved lot if you come early enough.

We're making extra beef stew for the event. A fresh pot is ready right now!

Thanks Mosquito! Stew definately a hit, 3rd pot this week will be simmering tonight in preparation for tomorrow. You bringing the wife and little one into town? Hey, it was good to see you, Ed, and Mark yesterday!

Regarding Loy Khratong, here's a brief history, taken from wikipedia:

Loi Krathong (also written as Loy Krathong or Loy Gratong, Thai: ลอยกระทง, IPA: [lɔːj kràʔ tʰoŋ]) is a festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand and certain parts of Laos and Burma (in the Shan State). The name could be translated "Floating Crown" or "Floating Decoration", and comes from the tradition of making buoyant decorations which are then floated on a river.

Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional and they do this all evening on the 12th monthThai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

Loi means 'to float', while krathong refers to the (usually) lotus-shaped container which floats on the water. Krathong has no other meaning in Thai besides decorative floats, so Loi Krathong is very hard to translate, requiring a word describing what a Krathong looks like such as Floating Crown, Floating Boat, Floating Decoration. The traditional krathong are made from a slice of the trunk of a banana tree or a spider lily plant. Modern krathongs are more often made of bread or styrofoam. A bread krathong will disintegrate after a few days and can be eaten by fish. Banana stalk krathong are also biodegradable, but styrofoam krathongs are sometimes banned, as they pollute the rivers and may take years to decompose. A krathong is decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, incense sticks, and a candle. A small coin is sometimes included as an offering to the river spirits. On the night of the full moon, Thais launch their krathong on a river, canal or a pond, making a wish as they do so. The festival may originate from an ancient ritual paying respect to the water spirits.

Government offices, corporations and other organizations big large decorated krathongs. There are competitions for the best such krathong. A beauty contest is a regular feature and fireworks have become common in recent years.

Loi Krathong is often claimed to have begun in the Sukhothai by a court lady named Nopphamat. However, it is now known that the Nopphamat tale comes from a poem written in the early Bangkok period.[1] According to H.M. individual Rama IV, writing in 1863, it was a Brahmanical festival that adapted by Thai Buddhists in Thailand to honor Buddha, Prince Siddhartha Gautama. The candle venerates the Buddha with light, while the krathong's floating symbolizes letting go of all one's hatred, anger, and defilements. People sometime cut their fingernails or hair and placed the clippings on the krathong as a symbol of letting go of negative thoughts. However, many ordinary Thai use the krathong to thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha (Thai: พระแม่คงคา).

The beauty contests that accompany the festival are known as "Nopphamat Queen Contests". According to legend, Nang Nopphamat (Thai: นางนพมาศ; alternatively spelled as "Noppamas" or "Nopamas") was a consort of the Sukothai individual Loethai (14th century) and she had been the first to float a decorated raft. However, this is a new story which was invented during the first part of the 19th century. There is no evidence that a Nang Nopphamat ever existed. Instead, it is a matter of fact that a woman of this name was the leading character of a novel released during the end of the reign of individual Rama III – around 1850 CE. Her character was written as guidance for all women who wished to become civil servants.

2013 NOT Postponed Celebrations:
As of Nov 1, TAT announced Loy Krathong will take place as planned but with more 'subdued' festivities: http://www.tatnews.org/media-release/53 ... hetchaburi

A slight change of plans for this evening...

Grand mama is feeling ill today and there will be no khratongs available tonight, at least not here. They'll be readily available from the many vendors around the park I'm sure, as well as the lanterns.

Drink special for today, after 5PM, for GIN lovers. Gin/tonic with a twist only 50 baht... til closing time.

Mouth watering Beef Stew, Sloppy Joes, and Fish and Chips with our now WORLD famous tartar sauce are ready to serve (along with our regular menu items).

Parking will become difficult after sunset. There's a large lot BEHIND our building owned by Rabiang Patchanee restaurant across the street, and a large paved lot at the end of the building owned by the night plaza. A fee MAY be involved for tonight.

Don't know for sure if fireworks are planned this year or not with the "subdued celebrations" ordered out of respect for the big monk's passing.

Regardless, it's sure to be a fun evening.

Between us, we enjoyed fish and chips x 2, Philly cheese steak and deserts. All the food was excellent - a good way to fuel up for the festivities.

Enjoyed the chat and the weather was a lot drier than last year!
Hey Bouph, it was good to see you all again! Nice to see some of the same faces from last year's Loy Khratong, and yes, much lower key this year.

Just serving up some dandy looking pancakes with a side of bacon and some nice smelling coffee.

CORN DOGS @ Bubba's Bar & Grill (Sponsor)

...are now available. I'd venture to say there's not many an American kid over age 3 that hasn't had one (or more) of these at a local county or state fair. We make 'em with real Corn Meal and in 2 sizes, "regular" and "Jumbo". Served with French's yellow or spicy brown mustard (or ketchup if you're a weirdo  ).

Was still very popular in the 80's to 2008 (last time I had one), open all night and within a few steps before the street light to cross back to the dark side of life on base.

Bubba will be visiting on Friday (with last week Friday's crowd), looking forward to trying 1 or 2 of those corn dogs.

We were back in the states last year and I loaded up on corndogs. I love the darn things. Nice to see they are available here in Udon. Those who haven't had the opportunity to try them, should. Really quite tasty IMHO.

Dogs, dogs, DOGS... CORN DOGS to be more specific, are selling, well like hotcakes? Going to market now to restock. Apparently there were people, other than myself, who were missing these tasty treats.

They are also an excellent appetizer for our other delicious menu items. Our spaghetti, with Jun's home made sauce, is just spicy enough to appeal to Thais as well as westerners. The beef stew is perfect for these cooler days. And don't forget our sloppy joes! As someone commented on our behalf elsewhere on the web, "A little bit of America right here in Udon".
