Fair warning ... Latest Tea money hustle

Post by Baht Man » December 15, 2013, 9:48 am

Latest for me as I've never encountered it before.

The Ms. was driving past the Thai Suri market and was called over to the side by a BIB.
He told her that it was now illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving, pull over the the desk and pay the fine of 200 baht.

Needless to say, she was quite unhappy as she encounters "under the table" deaings like this all the time as a teacher.

As she handed her license to the dude at the desk, he told her the fine was really 400 baht.

She said no numerious times and asked why the other copper told her the fine was 200 baht.

Ultimatly he gave in (somewhat) and told her.. "Ok, I'll change the ticket driving without a license"

WTF is this place coming to?

If she wasn't so family rooted here, making decent money as she does... she'd be on the next plane outta here.

seems to me she got a break and only paid 200baht. And yes it is illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving as it is dangerous to do so. Now, hope she learned her lesson and won't use the cell phone while driving. Just like most learn after paying a fine for no helmet while on a motorbike.

Dont see the scam ,,it is illegal to talk on the phone whilst driving ... maybe the reduction in fine for whatever reason was strange , and its common knowledge the BIB just love a cuppa Rosey Lee.

I would add i wish the BIB would clamp down heavily on red light jumpers ,, 1000 on the spot fine , at all junctions in the town , if no money license taken and car / bike impounded.... this is by far the worst driving offence imo

I prefer the Thai method to the British model, 3 points on your licence and increased insurance premiums.

Depends what state? In New Jersey it's a $200 fine first offense and $400 for second offense. 200฿ that's a bargain.

depends what state you are in, as illegal in about a third of the states.

can't argue it, as some people can't walk and talk at the same time, let alone drive.

Hi,
This is not a scam. You are breaking the law, if you use a hand held phone when driving. Most people cant drive correctly when they have 2 hands on the wheel., and not only Thais.
As for helmets. This is up to the rider, IMO If they are brain dead, if they wont wear one. Mind you it might take a few of them of the road, and save on hospital bills.
Seen two deaths this last two year due to people not wearing a helmet. One on the ring road, the single carriageway one. Overtaking a car and straight into a 20 Ton lorry., Dead before he hit the ground. Another Just inside the ring road, helmet in the basket on front of the bike. went into the back of a car, and what brains he did have where on the road, Still his wife who was on the back of the bike, and wearing a helmet was O.K. and she was screaming at the person driving the car he went into the back of. TIT.

Depends on what state your from. Far as I know been illegal in California for years. Good reason for it, drivers attention. You wouldn't notice it here, even those with bikes do it. Seldom enforced I think would be accurate. But, for years you could ride a big bike with no plates. Laws are there it's when they decide to enforce them. Really up to them.
