***
No, no, no. No dancing ladies, AND we're not going to dig a hole and cook a pig, but it WILL be Hawaii themed. We'll have some unique and delicious food available. Did not mean to mislead anyone. I'm an ideas guy. Only the last 12 years of my working career was spent as a DA truck driver. Before that I managed retail establishments. My job was getting people through the door (amongst a multitude of others). I ran the dancing ladies idea by Jun a Loooooonnng time ago. I think I still have a few scars from that idea. I digress.

Everything will be ready for Saturday and Sunday. We may have some items available tomorrow. You have to understand, I'm working with a one person staff that, at times, can become quite temperamental. 8-[ I know for sure one item will be ready for tomorrow as it was made tonight and needs to "chill" overnight for best flavour.

Also, we'll have sausage gravy and biscuit ready to serve in the AM. Combine with our home made onion, jalapeno, cheese hash browns, plus a couple eggs and you have a Big Breakfast... American Style!

More info to follow.

Open 9AM - 9PM

This weekend's menu:

Oven Roasted Kalua Pig with Brown Gravy

Macaroni Salad

And of course the infamous LOCO MOCO!

With a name that sounds more like a Mexican fast food joint or a designer drug’s street-name, you’d hardly expect Loco Moco to be a dish that hails from a chain of volcanic islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Born out of the plate-lunch culture that is a pillar of modern Hawaiian cuisine, Loco Moco is a dish that could only have been invented in the melting pot that is Hawaii.

Loco moco is a meal in the contemporary cuisine of Hawaii. There are many variations, but the essential loco moco consists of white rice, topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and brown gravy. Variations may include chili, bacon, ham, Spam, kalua pork, linguiça, teriyaki beef, teriyaki chicken, mahi-mahi, shrimp, oysters, and other meats. Loco Moco is also the name of a Hawaiian-based restaurant chain that serves Hawaiian rice bowl dishes.

The dish is rumored to have been created at either the Lincoln Grill or May's Fountain, two restaurants in Hilo, Hawaii, in the 1940s. The most probable origin of the name is that "loco" is a variation of "local", while "moco" was added simply because it rhymed.

The dish is widely popular in Hawaii and now on the menu at many Hawaiian restaurants in the mainland. In keeping with the standards of Japanese cuisine, rice is used as a staple starch, finished off with the hamburger, gravy, and fried eggs to create a dish that does not require the preparation time of bento. Loco moco can be found in various forms on many Pacific islands from Hawaii to Samoa to Guam and Saipan, and is also popular in Japan.

This dish was featured on the "Taste of Hawai'i" episode of Girl Meets Hawai'i, a Travel Channel show hosted by Samantha Brown. The episode features the dish being served at the popular restaurant, Hawaiian Style Cafe, in Waimea together with the plate lunch, another Hawaiian specialty dish.

The loco moco was also featured on a Honolulu-based episode of the Travel Channel show Man v. Food (this episode aired in the show's second season). The host, Adam Richman, tried this dish at the Hukilau Café, located in nearby Laie.

We've got many of the above mentioned "extras" in stock for the Loco Moco, including SPAM!

And no Luau would be complete without a MAI TAI !

Everything is ready NOW!

Come join us!

Bubba and Jun

P.S. Thanks for the photo, Stan. Our pork was prepared in a similar fashion (just smaller scale).

Bubba, I was surprised on my recent visit to Hawaii on how big macaroni salad and spam are there. About the free maitai if customer comes in wearing a grass skirt, hope that is limited to ladies only as there are a bunch of ugly legged guys out there who might also forget to wear something under the grass skirt :-)

My first trip to Hawaii was in 1968, when at the tender age of 21, I went to be a beach bum in Waikiki. I stayed 6 months, working at a gas station to make just enough money to get by. I witnessed the unveiling of the "Rainbow" at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. My room mate at the time was an extra on the original Hawaii 5-0 series. Then it was back to reality on the mainland, but I managed to average about one trip a year to this lovely paradise for the next 20 years. I wasn't aware of this "street food" that we're serving now when I was there. Surprisingly, I know a half dozen people right here in Udon that were born and raised in the islands! They are the ones who have enlightened me to this "new" comfort food.

Good point about the grass skirt/free drink offer! I know the Brits, in particular, are eager for an excuse to cross dress. ;) JUST KIDDING GUYS!!! However, the offer now officially limited to LADIES ONLY. :-"

That Hawaian food looks good, but I'll have to pass on the spam. I still remember it as "Chu Lai steak".

Looks like it to me but it is a bit over cooked. I think passing is a good idea on this one. Although gator is might good eating, just not ah, 'prepared' like this.

Muffins are hot out of the oven now. We're still struggling with some uniformity issues, but Jun will get it down soon. Before somebody tries to accuse us of trying to steal customers from next door let me say this. For one, that would be impossible. They have a captive audience and they are doing a fantastic job of taking care of their customers. The real reason we started this is because I LOVE BLUEBERRY MUFFINS. I think that fact is well documented. And, about a third of the time I go next door to buy one they are sold out! So, the obvious remedy was to make our own. It turns out Jun did such a great job they are worthy of offering to the public as well.

Home made sausage gravy and biscuits also available.

Weekend special TBA. Stay tuned.

Having tried both, and being a Beyond Caf‚é fan (well, addict, really), I believe that I can be objective. And my objective opinion is that Jun's are better. They taste very much like the old Jordan Marsh muffins I grew up on in Boston.
