Try Bkk hospital. The doctor is rather nice and speaks English. Yes, I know Bkk cost a lot more but you can at least expect a more hygienic condition and not worry about infection.

Haven't used her services, but a friend highly recommends her...Dr. Wongchan Lapanun. I believe she has training in the US, Michigan I think.

My recommendation - Udom Clinic (second dentist on the left after the prison on your way north) I walked into the clinic today at Noon without an appointment. Rak Fan Clinic last week said that they could not fix the porcelain filling on one of my front teeth. After waiting a while, I was sent in to a male dentist who seemed to speak good English - he didn't talk all that much. He said that I had to have two fillings on that tooth replaced. He then proceeded to go to work. He worked quickly and efficiently. I ended up with a beautiful tooth that matched all the others in color. Total cost 1,800 Baht Total time, including waiting time - 30 minutes. I think that I was in the chair for 10 to 15 minutes. My dentist by choice - Udom Clinic

I would highly recommend Bangkok Hospital. I've been seeing Dr. Runchana Surapattananont for a lengthy process. She speaks excellent English, and I find her highly capable (and carefull). One one occasion, after 1 1/2 hours in her chair, she was unable to complete a procedure, and I wasn't charged for it. She does excellent work. For some more complicated procedures, like root canals and extractions, specialists are brought in from Bangkok. They too, have been very capable. I have no complaints. (I've tried several other dentists in the area, with very mixed results.)

I went to Bangkok Hospital Dental Clinic to see Dr Runchana the other day. Very good experience. The clinic looked very professional and they saw me at the appointed time. The dentist listened to me and was interested in helping me. She did a quick but appropriate medical history. After looking at my tooth, she agreed with my suggestion for an X-ray. She is a prostodontist, so she is not always pushing to extract teeth. She talked with me about the pros and cons of repairing the tooth or extracting it and was very professional. She said that if I wanted it extracted, an oral surgeon would do the procedure. This appointment was only 210 baht, including X-rays. Very good value.

I will be back to use her services and can recommend them highly.

I was under the impression that all dentists could perform these procedures. I've had a number of root canals and extractions in my time, and I don't recall that I ever had to call upon a specialist. If a traditional dentist at Bangkok Hospital Udon doesn't possess the knowledge and skill to simply pull a tooth, then I don't think I would want them fooling around inside my mouth for any reason.

We are now in the age of specialist!

Dr Runchana is a D.D.S. and she prefers not to do extractions herself. Dr. Salinee comes in from Bangkok to do root canals. I don't know if she does extractions. Udon Thani Hospital is set up the same way. One doctor does root canal work and another does the crown.

Actually, it's getting to be this way in the States, also. My family dentist in Athens, GA no longer does extractions or root canals, but instead refers patients to a specialist, oral surgeon for these procedures. Don't know why as he did these things in the past. Probably insurance or liabiliy issues, maybe??

The tooth I am having problems with is a mandibular third molar (wisdom tooth). There is no need for replacement. The dentist told me the cost for the oral surgeon to do the extraction is about 2000 baht. The dentist at Rakfan told me the starting cost is 1000 baht.

Third molars can be significantly more difficult and involved to extract than most other teeth and therefore, some patients and dentists feel that an oral surgeon is more appropriate.

I would be grateful that he chose to be honest and "loose face" rather than having a go at something he wasn't qualified to do.

Here in states my daughter had 4 molars removed at once because to tight in mouth causing her pain. Her dentist referred her to Oral surgeon because they use full anesthesia to do these type extraction, additionally the tooth is just not "pulled" it sometimes requires a little cutting around gum area and one or two stitches . In the past when needing normal extraction , not tight molar, or root canal my dentist does this in office as just local (numbing) anesthesia needed.

Don't know whether to post this here or in '1097 reasons I enjoy living in Thailand'.....but here goes:

I chunk of veneer came off one of my teeth last night while brushing......no pain, no feelings of roughness anywhere.....but wanted to have my teeth looked at to be sure there was nothing amiss. Just before my dose of cappuccino and Belgium coffee cake, I stopped by Rak Fan Clinic (near Maya) to see if a dentist was available. 'Have a seat', but before I could sit, I was called into a room with an awaiting dentist and 2 technicians. The dentist pointed out the area where the veneer came off and went about fixing it. Fifteen minutes and 600 baht later, I was able to enjoy my dessert just up the road.
While you might be able to crash a queue at a dentist in the US with an offer of a few extra (hundred) dollars for emergency service, there's just no way you'd walk in and out in 15 minutes. Yes, reason 1097 sounds like a good reason to live here.
