I'd say those are speckled butter beans. I have never seen in Thailand, much less Udon. I guess I could order seeds from the states and give it a try in the garden. I was never much for lima beans, although "baby" limas weren't too bad. Anybody else here have not so fond memories of Ham and M-F's?

Topps have about the largest selection of dried beans that I have seen in Udon - unless anybody knows better... :D
Great Northern Beans
Small White Beans
Pintos (my personal favourite)
White butter beans
Garbanzo or Chickpea
&, of course, Red Kidney beans

Although, like with all shopping in Udon, availability can be a hit & miss affair..

Pintos and Red Beans, must have for certain foods, i.e. Mexican (New Mexican) and of course Red Beans and rice. I haven't stopped in there in sometime, didn't see the Pinto or Red beans last time I was there. Thanks for the info.

The butter beans comment was a joke knowing they could not be found locally. My practice marriage was to Cajun as well. Her mother always made jambalaya with speckled butter beans

Butter beans as a side with jambalaya? Possible, now jambalaya w/speckled butter beans I don't remember. I'll say this, that crazy Cajun I married could cook and so could her mom and grandmother. I do remember speckled butter beans. Funny many years later when my son was out of the Navy SEALS he literally forced a truce on his mom and I. I knew her husband's brother from years back. Husband and I got to be ok with each other, by this time there was a "kindred spirit"...lol. He knew I was no threat to his marriage, ran off and left us once when bar-hopping in Lake Charles. He once asked me if he could hitch on to one of my trips to Thailand. I told him that I knew why and if he did he would never go back to her...lol. But she could cook. Miss those "mud bug" boils, the Cajun music, beer etc. that went with. I've got one good CD full of Cajun music left. Lots of "Swamp Pop".

Had a nice group of guys from Chiang Rai and Bangkok who have lived and worked in Thailand for over 20 years. They were out for their annual "boys night out" and had heard about our burgers. You know, the HALF POUND BEEF patty variety, not something else shoved between two halves of a loaf of bread. This also disproves the statement recently made on another media that we're too small to handle a group of any size. ;) Six cheeseburgers, 2 Philly Cheesesteaks, and 5 apple pies later...

Thanks guys!

I can understand why only 3 left. My thanks again to Jun. Great food. Even a bit of okra in the jambalaya. I think maybe even better this time around.

This weekend's special will be a real southern favorite from one of Emeril Lagasse's recipes. Stay tuned.

Trying to cut back on cholesterol, notice only one egg. A blend of western and Asian foods make a delicious breakfast!

I spent 15 years, cumulative, in California. One of the very first weekend adventures I went on was to the Danish village of Solvang, up hwy 101 from L.A., near Santa Barbara. It's called the Santa Ynez Valley. A couple of the more famous residents of this area are former president Ronald Reagan, and maybe more interesting to some, Bo Derek. It's a great place to spend a crisp, Fall, or early Spring Saturday afternoon. Many shops for interesting souvenirs and fabulous Danish pastries. For lunch, however, there was really only one choice for me, Anderson's Inn. http://www.peasoupandersens.com/ In 1975, at age 28, it was my first real "escape" from my home in Tennessee. Anderson's signature dish was, and still is, Split Pea and Ham soup. It reminded me of Grandma's home cooking, and made me homesick.

So, in the slow cooker right now as we speak, a recipe from Emeril Lagasse, Split Pea and Ham soup. Served with homemade cornbread. Availble tomorrow, and through the weekend, or while supplies last. One order to be reserved in advance for our VIP customer, who will be out of town on business this weekend. ;)

I'd post a photo from Emeril's website, but Pea Soup is one of those dishes that a photo does not do justice. You just have have to taste it to see why it's so popular.

BTW, Anderson's has had there soup mass produced in a canned version and available in supermarkets for more than 40 years now.

I've visited Solvang as well as Andersen's in nearby Buellton and agree that both are very enjoyable experiences. The split pea soup there is superb and although creamy and smooth it contains no milk or cream. Good stuff.

Grits, one of the most horrible foods every. I was born and raised Southern, my family never, ever served grits. I will never forget Leon County Jail Florida-one big grit you could peal off the tray. I'll have nightmares tonight and may not be able to eat for days , I'll still be able to drink beer. More power to you that like and can eat, you are a better man than I Gunga Din. Now split pea and cornbread, I'll give that a go. Hope to get in tomorrow.
