Of course Thais could not have done such a dastardly thing... rape a teenager, and throw her body from a moving train etc etc. Oh, sorry, that was Thai...

Although a bit off topic, an interesting statistic that can be derived from that article and one that would cause concern for the TAT if the murders adversely impact the British tourist market is that the average British tourist spends nearly 70% more per day than the average European tourist (7,000 Baht per day against 4,200 Baht per day).
Each British tourist spends 7,000 baht a day on average for a length of stay of 16 days.

Average spending per head of European tourists overall is 4,200 baht a day for 17 days.

Original article: http://www.bangkokpost.com/most-recent/ ... -tat-s-job
I understand that the proportion of British tourists to European tourists overall is quite substantial, if they were to be excluded from the overall European tourists the difference would be even greater - quite possibly over 100%.
Ashamed to be English since 23rd June 2016 when England voted for racism & economic suicide.

As far as speculation goes its looking like a fellow Brit could be the culprit.

I think most countries target tourists from whom the host country will attract the most benefits. Visa laws try to facilitate this.

That's a big difference Jimbo. I wonder why it's so large. I would have thought the Germans, French, Swiss and Dutch would have spent as much as the Brits. Some European countries must be pulling the average down. These murders might have a short term impact on the numbers of British visitors to Thailand.

The speculation seems to be going around in circles now coxo. Are we back to a British suspect? I wonder if jealousy was some part of the motive.

This story gets more and more crazy.....
1.Thai police have admitted they made a mistake on the CCTV footage and the pair shown walking together were not the murdered couple.
2.Two English brothers detained at Suvarnabhumi airport, and friends of the lad murdered, are only helping the police
with their enquiries and not likely to be suspects......apparently there is/was a third English guy but where he is is not clear.
3.The Eighth Regional Police Commisioner,Pol-Lt-General Panya Mamen has disclosed that there are SIX persons suspected being involved in the murder of the young couple.DNA tests have been made and results will be known later today. The Commisioner would not elaborate on the nationalities of those who have been tested.

What a dogs breakfast.....very sad for the families of the victims having to endure this ever changing scenario. :(

You have only to read this thread as to all the arm chair investigative experts speculating what happened, the English backpacker has now been arrested, he was one of the first people the BIB sought, the Burmese just happened to be in a labour camp near by.

Interesting comment by junta leader:

Thai PM after #KohTao murders: "can they [tourists] be safe in bikinis... unless they are not beautiful?" http://asiancorrespondent.com/126776/th ... n-bikinis/ … #Thailand
Maybe he needs to have a word to the minions at the TAT.

I think he is trying to say the Thai male is such a sick deprived sex starved maniac any female who exposes herself is in danger, maybe very true and not ignorant but fact. A mate has just returned from a surf trip to some islands of North Sumatra, he saw western females in bikinis being stoned on the beach for exposing themselves, when in Rome....sometimes when your away you must identify your location and situation...

I reckon Yingluck would have handled this much better. A soldier isn't used to discussing these civil issues with both a domestic and international audience in mind. He has a bit to learn.

UPDATE:

Brits' murder: DNA from crime scene do not match that of captured suspects

BANGKOK, 18 September 2014 (NNT) – Police revealed the DNA collected from the body of the two British tourists murdered on Koh Tao in Suratthani and from nearby evidence do not match those of suspects in custody.

It was initially thought both victims had died from wounds to their heads. Forensic police determined on Wednesday, however, that the male victim may have been dragged into the sea before death, after finding water in his lungs. Forensic officials confirmed that both victims were engaged in sex at some point at or near the time of the murder. Police also said DNA collected from the semen found on the body of the female victim were possibly from two people. However, none of the DNA matched those of migrant workers being detained as prime suspects.

Police has asked the British mission for cooperation in preventing Christopher Alan Ware, friend of the male victim, from leaving Thailand. Police officials earlier allowed Mr. Ware to depart from Koh Tao with the intention of leaving Thailand, but now said they needed to question him further.

In the meantime, Minister of Interior Anuphong Phaochinda has vowed to take up the issue of tourists' safety when he assigns ministry policies to provincial governors nationwide today.

Still an intriguing whodunnit. Which way is it going to turn next? You wouldn't want to have been anywhere near the scene at the relevant time as the police are still throwing their net widely.

I'll pass on that Sakhonnick thanks. I sense the Thai police are struggling with this double homicide now. I think there was more than one perp.

Looks like they are doing everything they can to fit up one of the workers on the island but the informationn provided through DNA testing is proving inconvienient and working against the preferred outcome. Without the DNA I'd bet they'd already have a nice confession.

Let's face it, the Thai police are little better than village Bobbies and won't have the skill set available to solve such a murder. The source below identifies how the FBI are being called in.

A development in the last couple of hours......(Thai PBS News)

Asian suspects rape English tourist

Royal Thai Police commissioner revealed Saturday that latest DNA examination has now confirmed Asian suspects responsible for the rape and murder of the English tourist in Koh Tao.

Pol Gen Somyot Phunphanmuang disclosed the latest test of DNA samples collected from semen found inside the body of Ms Hannah Witheridge, 23, showed they belonged to Mongoloid people or Asians.

He revealed the finding just before boarding a flight to Surat Thani today to direct the investigation and hunting down the suspects.

The latest discovery has now enabled the police to narrow their investigation to focus on specific groups, migrant workers and local Thai people.

Pol Gen Somyot also said the Royal Thai Police has now suspended its earlier plan to seek help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after forensic doctors could conduct deeper test of the Y chromosome DNA test.

A Y chromosome DNA test (Y-DNA test) is a genealogical DNA test which is used to explore a man’s patrilineal or direct father’s-line ancestry.

The genealogical DNA test looks at a person’s genome at specific locations. Results give information about genealogy or personal ancestry. In general, these tests compare the results of an individual to others from the same lineage or to current and historic ethnic groups.

Well, that's some progress albeit not much.

Very nice avatar Zids. Perhaps she's Yingluck's younger sister?
