Depends really on how much they want to spend & if they have transport.
Plus if a pool is a must for the youngsters.

The Pannarai is good as it is in the centre of town, but not located in the most salubrious of streets after nightfall. It is quite expensive for what it is though, but very convenient if strolling around the Complex & Night Market is a plus.
The RoySuk 2 is on the ring road so transport is really a must, but is nice & reasonably priced... Absolutely zilch in walking distance though..

He wasn't.
I think that he has left the hotel side of the family business for a couple of years now.
Cousin was running the original & I think a younger brother was running 2.
But that could have changed.
I do hear good things about it though, especially the pool & value for money.
Realistically own transport is a bit of a must unless they would be very comfortable using tuk tuks..

I just spent a couple of days in Udon with my wife and 2 small kids. We stayed at the Charoen which is very central. While dated, the hotel was ok. The pool was nice.

I find udon a very strange place trying to book anything .
I am looking for a place with a pool for kids this month . I phoned bbresort (now bb villas but no villas ) was quoted 650 baht a night or 15,000 baht a month +8 baht a unit for elec and 30 baht a unit for water which as i said to the lady would be about 20,000 baht a month . she said yes about right then looked confused when i said that that was nearly 670 baht a night for a month which was more or the same as her daily rate. Gave up and hung up while her brains was trying to work it out.
Went to ruy suk 2 , asked a couple of completely moronic giggling staff , 2 girls and 1 ladyboy how much for a night, after a lot of discussion about 15 mins told me 650 baht , when i asked how much for a month, a lot of discussion told me they did not know but about 12,000 baht not sure about electric. Gave up
Emailed jan condotel as its near a hotel with a pool ,no answer same as about 6 or 7 places more i emailed or phoned.
tomorrow go to knong khai for a week as unable to book anything i wanted in udon due to the usually thai apathy

Try the Nong Khai City Hotel, Soi Nitapat. Clean accommodation with parking and very near Mai's Bar. Mai and Luc , French husband, are very nice and she cooks excellent Thai and Western food. I recommend the "fish and chips" and my wife recommends the "live prawns".

Nong Khai is everything Udon Thani isn't :)

You could try Nakaburi resort, it's 14 kilo outside Udon off the Nong Khai HWY.
