Mail "Service" Here

Been in Udon 4 months and haven't received any personally addressed mail even though a few people have said they mailed letters to our house address. It's possible that I may need to have someone abroad mail an original document to me sometime in the future, as an example, so this is a concern. Due to the internet emails, attachments, online banking and such, receiving regular postal mail is not a huge problem but wondering what some of you are doing about it?

Do you have to register with the post office before they will leave mail at your house? Or maybe the problem is that local mail carriers won't deliver mail with non-Thai scripture address information?

Anyone rent a post office box? If so, are you receiving all of your mail OK?

can't comment on the other stuff,
but that can't be the problem, i have only sent english written address's to thailand even to way out the way villages, and they arrive.

I have had no problem (I think) with mail being delivered. I'm renting from a Thai English teacher and she supplied the address in English. That said I have a friend that built out a ways and they had big problems and it took many trips to the post office until his wife (understands English pretty good) finally got it straightened out. I think it was mainly a zip code problem.

I rent a box at the main post office on Wattana Nuwong Rd. I have recieved everything that has been sent to me from the States and all my domestic mail. I just renewed the box at 180 baht, but the first year was more due to deposits and processing fee? Bring your passport and a copy.
When I lived at my condo in Jomtien, I recieved all my mail ok for six years.

I regularly received mail addressed in English, and some addressed in Thai, at my house in Moo Ban Rom Yen 3, and on a regular basis. They don't have a problem with overseas mail addressed in English.

I'm still waiting for a package that was sent out the 2nd week of Dec 2006. Not sure how long it really takes for a package to come from Maryland, USA to Udon Thani, Thailand. My mother sent a package from Tampa, Florida and got here in about 14 days. It could be the holidays that may have slowed up the delivery, but I'm sure it should have been here by now. By the way, it was send regular mail.

Same here, have mail sent from states every other month. Takes 7-10 days except holidays. Get Thai/english mail from BKK also with no problem!

(strange, they can even pronounce my last name correctly written in Thai, hell, they couldn't even do that in america written in english!)

Polehawk,

I suggest using Express Mail (EMS here in Thailand) at a minimum. I have sent and received documents via Express Mail without a problem, possibly because its registered.

In any case, I would not send an important original document into this country by and unregistered mail service.

The address is irrelevent - its whats inside thats important and I have found that anything apart from a standard letter will probrably not arrive.
I have seen it all here from opened letters to damaged parcels to simply missing.
I would be very careful about how I sent something valuable or important through the post to here.

I guess it might depend on your mail man then. You name it and I have had it sent to me. Maybe its my timing

In my personal experiance, the last two years I've been sending letters via Global Priority (4-6 days), about $5.25 from So. Cal. Boxes of all sizes via air and surface and not once have they opened, lost, or charged us duty for mail sent to my wife. On one occasion I made an error to the first line of our address and we still got it. Most of the time I use my wife's maiden name, but we've also received mail intended for us using my family name.

I send small packages regularly to Kumphawapi just outside of Udon. They arrive within 10 days from the USA and have yet to experience any problems. My husband reports that it is delivered to his house on a motorbike from the Kumphawapi post office. The first time I mailed a package I thought that it would never get there. I am planning a special box of goodies for Valentine's day.

Maybe it has to do with the name Smith,because I have had a terrible relationship with the mail service!

i would agree, that is probably the problem. i didn't receive mail at house when first here. then i got a po box in town, and all my monthly magazines started arriving. parcel post arrived, of course with a peep hole. i have only not received one box at post box, and one letter took 4 months to get there, but was obviously lost in transit. parcel post is now handled by UPS, as my brother was going to send a box by UPS, and was told just use postal service and UPS is handling the parcel thru bkk, not sure if true. a while back my neighbor told me the post office here actually sent to survey customer service, and he receives all his mail, but we do have a different person deliverying now. i used to stop at the local post office and show my id, then i would be given a letter that obviously was sitting there for couple weeks, guess it wasn't in the schedule to drop off at house.

Since renting a PO Box in Ban Dung I have received all the mail I was expecting. Prior to that I was receiving about 25% from overseas and 50% domestic. All mail to our Tampon, which consists of 17 villages, goes to one location where the Puuyai Baan picks it up and dumps it into a box at his home where everyone has access to it whilst looking for theirs. Security?? Absolutley NIL.

I think the rental is about 150 Baht per year and 300 Baht deposit on the key.

would only ever register post to thailand from UK, signed for with insurance if it has some value.
it always arrives.

I receive mail from HSBC in Hong Kong and from family in Australia addressed in english. It all arrives at Soi Jintakam in the city without any problems.

We have a PO Box a the main post office although my bank statement has my home address on Phon Phisai Road. No problems with either. I invested in a mailbox, but anything that arrives to the home, whether it be personal or Thai junk mail, is always stuck in the door. Motorcycle mailman too lazy to get off the bike?
All my important VA/SS stuff goes to the PO Box as I was forewarned that anything with a US government return address could be thought to be a check.
In Lao, even got a PO Box there, no problem. They issued a picture ID with it but the two ladies guarding the entrance never look at it when I hold it up for them. Just another farang pi ba.
