Where to buy rubber or high density foam rubber

Post by ZARguy » January 6, 2015, 10:19 am

My gf's place in Sawang Den Din has 5 roll-up doors. When they are down and secured there is unfortunately a space big enough for rats to come and go. I want to get either some solid rubber or high density foam cut to size to force underneath at night. I guess the solid rubber option would be better as more difficult for them to chew it away. Any places here or in Udon that supply those items?

On Phosri Rd. Across from the Kasikorn Bank, there's a store that sells a variety of netting, ropes, etc. I bought rubber strips and use it in heavy duty jobs.
I think it comes in one meter lengths, but easy to make a long run if you use rubber cement. I've attached some to a tile floor....several years ago.....using rubber cement.....it's still bonded. About two inches wide and 3/8 thick. Cheap.
I'll attach some photos tonight if you need them

Parrot - thanks so much that sounds like it would do the job. Just wish it was here in SDD!
Length I need is 67cm, but may need to have the strips cut to about 15-20mm high. Do they offer a cuttting facility do you know?
If you perhaps have a clearer photo I can show the sales staff to speed things up, that would be nice. I have lots of problems explaining what I need to them, working through my gf who is non-tech!

Here's another photo.......if you need a thicker version, you could use rubber cement and bind them together. Be sure to apply a thin coating to each piece.....allow both to dry until they're not tacky to the touch.....then carefully place one on top of the other. Hammer down or step on. You won't be able to break them apart.

You could also try most any of the upholstery shops.....mostly little roadside shophouses that reupholster furniture/car seats. I've seen thick/heavy duty rubber matting in those stores. You could buy a one meter piece and cut it into strips.

Parrot: Just clarifying, does that shop offer a cutting service?
Were the strips you mentioned (3/8 x 1m) off the shelf?
The gap under the doors varies from 20-30mm I think so probably would need to double up.
Must do some proper measuring as the gap is not even on most of the doors and varies from left to right.
Is the rubber that tough variety? Do you think rats would chew through it easily as another poster suggested?

An alterrnative would be some thin aluminium sheets with a right angle so I could pop rivet them to the bottom of the door.
Is it alright to ask here if you know a shop that sells aluminium sheet and can cut and bend? (otherewise I'll p[ost that too).

Yes, the strips were off the shelf sized. Easy to double up in height or length with rubber cement. I'd say they'd withstand a truck no problem.

If you want aluminum, there are several large stores in town that make aluminum doors, windows, etc. One is at the corner of the ring road and Phosri..... On the ring road.....but many others scattered around town.

There's a reupholstery shop also on the corner of Phosri and ring road, across mthemstreet from the store that sells duck soup. You can buy heavy duty rubber matting in the length you want.

An update and some related info..
parrot, a friend took me by car to Phosri Rd, across from the Kasikorn Bank and we walked around for a 10 minutes but couldn't unfortunately locate the shop you mentioned. We asked at one likely looking place but they didn't understandt what I wanted and didn't seem to keen to let us browse (it was very jam-packed anyway. My expeditions to find shops have been very succesful, not beeing able to read the signs and so on.
Like yesterday my gf sent me 5 minutes away to a hardware store, supposed to be very close to a 7-11. However couldn't find it and subsequently found it it was closed for the day, two roll-up doors were down, no signage visible so it didn't register as a shop to me.

Regarding filling the space under our roll-up doors, we trapped a whole family of mice. Not even sure we had rats as what ever was there looked bigger but moved so fast it was just a flash of something.
Since I couldnt find the rubber what I did is roll up some black PC netting into suitably sized cylinders, tape around to retain the shape, then wedge under the doors. Rough and ready but so far seems to work. Not sure if it will retain its resilience and bounce back when you take it out. Time will tell. No signs of gnawing so I guess it wasn't rats.
Addendum: thos doors can make one hell of an irritiating racket when the wind blows against them, so I mad some short cylinders and jam 3 on each side and that solves that problem!

Here's another idea.........the foam insulation that wraps around AC pipes. It comes in a variety of sizes and could be cut down if necessary. It's not as heavy duty as the foam I posted above, but it'd probably work as well. When we bought new ACs for the house a few years ago, I asked the installer for a few pieces of each size......he gave them to me, no charge. I've used them in a variety of ways.....most recently to replace the foam handle on my lawn mower.
