It is probably because there was zero expectation by any of the England supporters...
India are looking a class side so far, with an astute captain in Dhoni . I always thought that they might be a threat with the bat, but it is their bowling attack that has impressed me.
Mind you I do think that the pitches have not shown much for the bowlers most of the time, favouring conservative bowling rather than attacking.
Anyone other than me think that this might be deliberate in order to make the sub-continent teams more competitive???

New Zealand cricket supporters are also usually PhDs in having low expectations to manage disappointments. But not for this tournament.
My brother went to the NZ - Australia match at Eden Park. When NZ were well on top the crowd were chanting at the Australians: "You're worse than England." The Aussies wouldn't have appreciated that. No wonder Maxwell made his choking gesture.

From a post on the 10th of February Bob:
Great minds or conspiracy nuts?A word of warning on the wickets. All summer long in the Shield and in the test series the wickets have been slow and low (well not Brisbane) by Australian standards. Subcontinental TV ratings are pretty important to the success of the tournament. I'd love to see the fast bouncy late summer wickets that should be everywhere in Australia by this time of year. It would give the Aussies and the Africans the best chance of winning but I think we'll see them batsmen friendly, that is, for Kholi and Sangakara.

Personally I think cricket is at its' best when there is a fair balance between the bowler & the batsmen.."Angelo Mathews scored the third fastest World Cup fifty off 20 balls. Five of the 8 fastest have come in this World Cup.
"Mathews is the first player to hit 6 sixes in his first 50 runs in a WC match.

Am sure the Aussie game coming up with Scotland will be an easy, if win the toss then bat, and post an exceedingly high score, hundreds to be made

I don't follow cricket nearly as much as some of our more cricket tragic posters here. Some of you guys are as bad or good as John Howard.
Anyhow I recall reading an item somewhere that the modern bat is very different from those decades ago. Apparently they're much heavier, better designed and have larger sweet spots. May be this is another reason for more runs and boundaries.

It would appear that Englands "run making machine" skipper,Eoin Morgan, disagrees with you.....four ducks in his last six innings would tend to bear this out !
Morgan, who bats at five for England, hit back at the suggestion, claiming the rules in place already suit the fielding sides with no advantage being gained from the new style bats.
"I think its ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous," Morgan said. (Daily Mirror)

Left hand bowlers are causing havoc in the world cup ,when will England get a John Lever medium fast bowler and a Derek underwood left arm spin to mix up their bowling attack

It would seem it doesn't matter what bat Mr Morgan uses (4 ducks 6 digs) when he walks out. Just have to learn learn to hit in in the middle old mate. You may then see that the willow's are better.Zidane wrote:GT,GT93 wrote: Anyhow I recall reading an item somewhere that the modern bat is very different from those decades ago. Don't worry rumour is that Kevin Pieterson will be back soon to help gel the England team together. At least his big bat used to slay a few balls over the pickets.
Oh dear now rain in the aussie match?
I think 20 overs have to be bowled to make a game of it?

They have to get 20 overs bowled somehow to make a result, loved the banter between Watson and the Scottish bowler, marvellous
TV switched to the Indian game while they are orf,an even game at the mo,India 130-4 chasing 287

If one was a cynic it could be said that this is the last real chance for the Indians to make a squillion for the bookmakers if they don't win against Zim.pomps wrote:They have to get 20 overs bowled somehow to make a result, loved the banter between Watson and the Scottish bowler, marvellous

Ominus sign for others though as today warner steps out down the order for a 6 off the first ball sighter, then 21 from 6 balls.
Aussies are far from top dogs this tournament for sure but the Kiwis did struggle badly to put away a weak bangla team yesterday. Confidence will be fading each day in the land of the long white cloud and I reckon they will be laying off their original bets.

Bad luck to Ireland who missed out on qualifying. They had the same points as the West Indies but an inferior run rate.
They beat the West Indies in their group match so can feel aggrieved at not going through.
Heres the Quarter Final draw......youve got to fancy Australia,India and New Zealand but the South Africa/Sri Lanka clash could be very close.

Watched a game of cricket on the weekend more to Bob's liking and more exciting than just about anything from the WC so far. My old club's first XI were playing off for the pennant in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association West A1 section. Lost the toss and bowled, dismissed the opposition for 107 and at stumps on day 1 our boys were 4 - 106. We were all out for 147 an hour or so into day two and then bowled again dismissing the opposition for 88 in their second dig. 48 to win outright and finish the 4 day game in two days. We finished day two at 4 - 30 after having been 3 for 6 and 4 for 8 ( 3 LBWs) in the first few overs. 18 to win with 6 wickets in hand next Saturday. On Sunday 20 wickets fell, 9 of those were LBW. Funny game cricket
