They did, according to the BBC.
Torn up sick notes from his doctor. Including one for the day of the crash..
2 doctors had declared that he was unfit to work, but didn't tell his employers..
The nature of his illness are,as yet, unclear.

Interesting to see how that story pans out.

I had a look at the reputation of Bild, and it seems to have about the same level of credibility as the Daily Mail eg they sometimes just make stuff up. :-k

Does this crash help explain the reason for the loss of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 ?
There seem to be similarities between both events

JS.............It seems to me you have a deep seated belief that many sources of information especially newspapers; in your words "lack credibility" or "sometimes make things up". That is, reasonably, one side of the equation but perhaps you could help balance the other side .What, British, European, World and Australian newspapers can in the main "be trusted"

They have to rely on hacking people's answer phone messages if they don't.

I was working night shift in Edinburgh when the Lockerbie tragedy happened. My boss let me finish early as I was travelling South for New Year with my 'treacle' at the time. My mates were told they would be kept on and bused to Lockerbie, which they were, and they relayed stories to me when I next saw them. Bodies intact found in fields with whole body impressions left in mud, Aircraft chairs found with victim's still strapped into their seats and one of them found a small wooden unbroken gift box with a Whisky bottle inside unsmashed.
Here's tae us, wha's like us, damn few, and they're a' deid. Mair's the pity!

Interesting comment reported from the French investigators:
France's Investigation and Analysis Bureau (BEA), tasked with investigating civil aviation accidents, meanwhile said it was "dismayed" by the revelations in the German press which it said smacked of "voyeurism".

From what I have seen in some of the re-reporting, gotta say I agree. :(

I really dont see the point scouring around the crash site for small body remains.
Checking "DNA" for what? All the victims were known on the flight.
What they going to do? Give their family a hand, or foot....
"Here is your love one" sorry cant find the rest  Crazy!
