Well Doc, I hope your post was off your own bat and not at the request of the place in question!!" (which it would seem that everyone is now referring to)!

Whilst as you point out, I no longer live in the area, my original posts were made with no particular venue in mind, more on a point of priniciple.

I have to say I felt your earlier lengthy posting was full of inconsistencies and reflected a certain strong bias. As an example, you talk of the majority of customers being smokers, and yet you say it is very popular with families.

Maybe there would be many more non-smoking customers there, but they have already withdrawn gracefully, due to the larger number of smokers. Maybe if conditions were made more suitable for the non-smokers, then they would come in large numbers (or flocks as someone recenly said  ) and the smokers would find themselves outnumbered and consigned to the outside courtyard or cellar!!! :D

Also, the law is the law, wherever a restaurant may be. It's not a case of apples and oranges. It's apples and apples!! :)

I would certainly hope that the management of this place are a lot more sensitive to the needs of all customers, both existing and potential, and not just certain regulars, than your posts suggest. And I assume it is their intention to build their customer base.

It was also interesting to note that you said the "non-smokers" would be dining outside, so presumably the smokers would have the benefit of the nice cool Air-Conditioned restaurant inside. Surely the smokers should be dining outside. :D

Knowing Steve, I am sure he will be doing his best to cater for the tastes of all their customers, existing and potential, not just the more visible or vocal ones! :)

My original posts were made on a point of principal, and not aimed at anywhere in particular. It is one of the few ways that I can stand up and be counted as non-smoker, as we non-smokers tend to be less visible and are often therefore less noticed or catered for.

As you rightly pointed out, I no longer live locally now, so I will leave it there. :)

I must have a weird sense of humour but I find it hilarious that any one who regularly sits in a smokey atmosphere without concern, is worried about the beer being out of date in the night market.

The subject of smoking in resturants is ongoing on another Forum.
There has been a poll running and 73% of polsters replied that they would prefer a non-smoking atmosphere.

From a personal point of view I can tolerate a smokey atmosphere as long as no one is blowing smoke in my direction. After a while I don't notice the smokey atmosphere. But what I find uncomfortable is the smell on my clothes when I get home. All clothes worn that night have to be put in the wash-bin or they stink the room out.

Thanks Galee, you've given me an idea to start a poll on this topic.

I don't like smoking in bars too, but I put up with it because I like to go out for a drink and chat a few days a week.

Maybe bars should issue free nicotine patches so the smokers can get their nicotine fix and the non-smokers get clean air, then everyone

If that poll result was reflected here, far from retaining his smoking customer base, they are in fact, denying them selves access to 75% of the potential market. Maybe the puffers should be the ones in the shed "out back"

I'm a smoker but voted "No" on the poll
When we go out to eat I enjoy a smoke afterwards but always leave the restaurant to smoke outside...more out of respect initialy for the wife as she hates it,but also for the other patrons :D
I dont go to bars very much but would be more than happy to smoke outside on the terrace.....it only takes a few minutes to have one (smoke that is  ) so its not realy a hardship

If the stats are right and 75% are against smoking then it's madness not to cater to the majority.Talk about limit your customer base when there's not a huge amount of farang to start with.Maybe in Phuket or Pattaya but not here.

:D :D :D :D

i would be a 'No', i don't and can not tolerate it for long. Ree would not smoke in mypresence or before meeting me, and quit before moving in with us. though she was a very light smoker. most of my smoking friends are very considerate, as Panic is, expecially Cliff, who enjoys his cigs, but always at a distance, thank you. i understand the relaxing feeling of a doobie, i mean smoke after a fine meal. last visit to this place, food and company nice, but i noticed the smoke, and even Gem commented, so unless policy changes, probably last time or if empty, as i enjoy short chats with Steve.
Maybe the puffers should be the ones in the shed "out back"
yes, please, when i go to a restaurant for a quite dinner w/date or family, i always ask for the premium seats next to the noisy bar and back by the toilets and kitchen. the best in the house. :D

when smoking friends come to the house and want a smoke, i'll accompany them to the porch and converse upwind, but never inside.

There should be separate polls for bars and restaurants; they are different types of establishment.

I can live with non smoking restaurants as I do not smoke while I eat and generally can easily step outside for a cigarette (except in the UK where it is only fit for brass monkeys outside).

I choose not to frequent or drink at bars that are non smoking as I simply do not enjoy a beer without the occasional cigarette. It's a total waste of money to have a beer if I don't enjoy it so I'll take my money to an establishment where I can enjoy spending it.

Should it be down to the management to declare a ban, after all its their premise's and lively hood .?
anyway....

I vote to "not" allow smoking in restaurants, i think we all know it is damaging smoking or breathing in others smoke.

This is 2007 and it is a sign of the times that smoking will be stubbed out in restaurants and now even in public places.
In restaurants 1st-2nd hand smoke and food don't really mix , if a ban was enforced and i needed a puff then would go outside or wait till i leave the joint.
In a few months the UK will be banning in all pubs that serve food,i will miss having a cigar with my drinks but i will get over it and they won't lose my custom.
same as place's in Udon won't lose my custom.

if it was purely a drinking bar only with no food then a ban should'nt be issued.
