Luggage

Post by valentine » January 24, 2007, 11:41 am

I know we had a few members coming and going to the UK recently. I am shortly going back and was wondering what the luggage v security situation is now? Especially to the carry on bag. Are you allowed to take the bottle of whiskey on? What other restrictions am I likely to encounter?

Val, this page has links for security at all BAA airports (includes Heathrow). It is ok to buy duty free Scotch in BKK and carry with you.

Problems arise if you have connecting flight in UK - after arriving in UK and retrieving your checked baggage (assuming it arrived) you will then need to pack the duty free Scotch into your checked baggage before checking it in for your next flight - the Scotch will not be allowed in your hand baggage.

Note that the security staff are not allowed to exercise any discretion no matter how stupid a rule is - for instance if you buy a bottle of water in the airport before going through security it will either be confiscated or you will have to drink it before going through security, it's irrelevant that you bought it in the airport.

Humour about security in the airport is an absolute no no, all security staff have had extremely successful humour bypass operations.

they checked some bag's that showed something up on x-ray (hand luggage) after p/control at bkk, usual stuff they scan your body for items, take out lap top, no sharpe items, did'nt even check for fluids in another bag we had , but some lady had 10 lighters taken away, she was most upset, at losing 100 baht's worth of fi-checks....back in to heathrow, no checks, but best be on the safe side.
Bring a wolley jumper with you val if you are arriving in next few weeks, a bit of snow last night more expected.

If you are flying Thai and you go to C-D gates I recommend the Tom Yum Noodles at 200 baht in a resturant on your left oppersite the jap resturant going towards the gate !!

Don't fly BA.

10's of thousands of suitcases are still missing after the fog delays a few weeks back.

In a couple of weeks I need to take two BA flights to connect with my flight to Bangkok - they are already booked and are right in the middle of one of the strike periods

BA advise everyone to put a label with your home address on the outside and inside of your suitcase so that it can be returned to you if it goes astray.
Of course problem is any unscrupulous person can read this and know your away from home.

Good luck Jimbo, hope everything goes OK.

My mum and dad always insisted that i must always put at least 3 labels on the outside and 1 label on the inside of my baggage, and always wear clean underpants when flying. :)
