The likelihood is if he can;t see it himself then he wouldn't understand what I'm on about.I am not at all concerned whether a farang bar owner is making a profit or not. That should have been his consideration when he decided to make the investment. Its not a new law you know?
As I make a point in my life of avoiding confrontational situations, I would rather walk away than complain. That's what I have done in the past and will do on this forum. There doesn't seem to be much more constructive to be said, and as you rightly point out the wall has been built.
Val, I'm just trying to put a different slant on the topic, instead of adopting a me,me,me attitude.

I think it's more of a case of not enough customers. Full stop.

All I was trying to say in cooperation will achieve more the the blame game, but in all honesty I don't think that is going to happen. So the horse is still laying there and we are still kicking it.

For a lot of guys it is the dream job, your own bar.

If Galee and Farang are correct about the lack of bodies and 75% do not want to sit in a smoky restaurant, then it's a short road to the next new owner who permits smoking.

IMHO, I doubt whether any of the owners, before they opened the business, actually put together a realistic "Business Plan" which should include as a minimum:
  • 1. Market survey
    2. Projected sales
    3. Profit & loss account
    4. Balance heet
    5. Cash flow statement
To that could be added many other items for consideration such as risk analysis, sensitivity analysis etc.

If bar owners had to borrow the money and justify the funding to a corporate bank I doubt whether any could make a commercial case which would convince a bank to lend them the money to get started

bars in udon thani do not close and reopen because of any smokeing policy a bar as in place
they do so because there are only a few monthes of the year when anybody can make a real profit although there are more tourists around these days the numbers needed to fill all the so called bars will never be there
guys like steve at the irish clock and harry at harrys bar do the best for all i feel and provide bloody good service yes they allow smokeing
because in the real world you have to make money to survive
stop trying to make thailand like your home countrys :?: dident you come to thailand to get away from the control freaks in the west
i hope that when i retire i find thailand as it is know and not some f--ked up nanny state like the uk our usa
ps i am a non smoker and it takes more then someone smoking to put me of me food if you picture a dog with a bone in its mouth

Each to his own, each to his own. :) Though Thais generally don't eat "like a dog with a bone"!

Yes, I came to Thailand for the fresh air, Thai food and friendly people. :D Oh and the Laos beer. I forgot the Laos beer. :o  :D

I agree the less legislation the better, - IF such things could be left to people's common sense; but as with the wearing of crash helmets, unfortunately, in this world, you cannot rely on people using a little common sense, or being sensitive to the fact that others don't want to be immersed in their cloud of (toxic) smoke!

I have been here in Udon for a number of years and seen a lot of changes, one noticeable change is the number of bars and restaurants.
Five or six years ago there were basically just two or three places that you could go and get some farang food now there are a lot more that you can frequent, so what is all the fuss about. Being a smoker myself I can sympathise with the non - smokers but you are free to eat and drink where ever you want, with such a choice available to you. I do not think it is a matter of legalities but it is a question of personal choice. there are a number of things that are illegal here in Thailand plus dangerous to you and other peoples health.
Prostitution is illegal but how many of us use this service, plus it can be dangerous to your health if you chose to not to take any precautions, but it is amatter of personal choice. Riding a bike without a crash helmet is illegal but how many of us do it. Also dangerous if we chose not to wear a crash helmet. Driving a car without a seat belt, how many of us do it. Also dangerous if we chose not to wear one.
Driving a car while under the influence, how many of us do this. Also dangerous to not only yourself but to other people as well.
Do legalities really come into it.
Come on all you ex-pats lets enjoy ourselves in this wonderful country, surely there is no need for all this back biting in our small community.
I also find it a shame that most of these comments that have been made seem to be aimed at one particular place, when there are various other establishments that offer food and are air conditioned.
Please do not forget that there are plenty of places for you to frequent so if you do not want to go to one specific place then find another.
