Savannakhet - New Non O Visa

Post by kris » July 11, 2015, 8:25 am

just got back from Savannakhet with new Non O 1 year multi entry visa. Can confirm you can no longer get these in a single day. Its a definite overnighter. In 8.30am to 11am. Pick up the next day 2pm to 4.30pm. Its probably because this place is now getting quite busy. I was surprised how many there were there on Monday morning.

I have stayed at the Hoongthip Hotel five or six times, and have not seen a cockroach there in three years. It is best to get a room on the second floor near the front of the hotel as it is less noisy at night. At the other end is a club to meet ladies, have drinks, dance and so on. Yes, you can take them away but not to your room unless you can sneak them in.

I think a room is 800 or 1000 baht per night. There are a number of good restaurants near the hotel, and a place to listen to live music nearby, in fact, there are two of them. One attracts the younger crowd.

Oh, you can get really small rooms that are musty but clean on the main floor that are half the price.

yes loads of guesthouses/resorts/hotels... i got lucky I think.. found this one just up the road from the friendship bridge

its down a bit of a side road... Viengxay resort.. 120000kip, very quiet, friendly staff, arranged tuk tuk etc, very comfortable bed.. not exactly the hilton but OK for a one night stopover

found a nice restaurant in town selling euro food, was OK.. Cafe Chez Boune

This was PROBABLY the WORST Place I've ever stayed at in almost 40 Years of travelling & Living in Thailand for the past 28 Years,The Owner An Older Laos Woman did nothing to help any of her " Paying Guests " All she was interested in was counting her Money,She Would'nt change a Thai Thousand Baht note for 2 x 500 Notes for me,Although She had them,All she wanted to give me was 240,000 Kip,Which was well BELOW the Official exchange rate of 400,000 Anyway,I Told her No Thanks !! as I Only wanted to pay for a meal outside in the evening ( they only serve a very limited B/ Fast ) Its Eggs Fried, Scrambled, or An Ommlette with a Baguette ( Everything else is EXTRA ) Including A Cup of Coffee, Butter & Jam....Room No.35 A/C & Fan was only 400 Baht But NOT Clean at all,In fact Quite Dirty,Shower Very Poor......My Advice " Just DON'T Stay in THIS Place " We saw plenty of other places in the area for 350-500 Baht which looked MUCH Nicer !!!!

Stayed March 2015, traveled on business

Sean Sabai Hotel quite nice and includes a breakfast. It's relatively new and in good condition. A whole lot nicer than the Hongthip. I had a nice room on the first floor. They even told me to bring my bicycle into the room for the night rather than leave it outside.

Ya gotta laugh, official exchange rate of 400k Kip, when it is in fact and for several years has been around the 240-250k Kip mark. When in Laos, changing a 1k TB note, you generally get the country's currency back, quite normal. You can always try and spend the Kip...

Is that the hotel by the river? If so, do you remember the prices for the Sabai? I have been looking for an alternative to the Hoongthip and this might be one. The Hoongthip also provides a breakfast that is okay. I think it consists of eggs, bacon, tomatoes, bread and Lao tea or coffee.

The gambling casino hotel is around $50 U'S. a night, but it is far from downtown, and gambling is not my cup of tea.

Looking at going here in Sept for my new Visa

Anyone been lately and can update on the time it takes to get the Lao visa processed and then getting to the Thai embassy before the lunch time cut off.

Still going to be a 5 hour drive from Udon to get to the border ?

Benefits of getting the Lao Visa in Khon Kaen on the way down ...

Savannakhet - New Non O Visa

Post by utr » July 23, 2015, 8:12 am

i went about a month ago.

the laos visa on arrival they processed it on the spot and took less than 2 minutes. it took me longer to fill in the forms. there were few foreign nationals arriving at that time i counted only about a dozen.

i found that arriving about 10:30am worked well, so no rush to get to the consulate, the queue of people that had arrived early had pretty much gone and i got to the window to hand in my application without waiting in a queue. it was very peaceful and relaxing.

although a friend told me that when he went about a month earlier, there was a very large organized group of teachers, and it was very busy that particular day.
