Most likely that there will be more effort investigating who 'leaked' the video than the 'investigation' to identify the assailants. 'How very dare you' (in the words of Catherine Tait) tarnish the tourism.

I was in Hua Hin last October and remarked to the TW how laid back and safe it seemed compared to (say) Patong and Pattaya, I also thought the local Thai's seemed much more relaxed than other spots. I will need to re-evaluate.

Looks like the person who leaked the video will get the punishment, not the hi-so Thai's who committed the crime. There are similarities to the attacks here in Udon a couple of months ago of the western retirees, bad luck there was no video! I guess the new sport in Thailand is bash a farang, it's been brewing for years.

It seems like the frequency of these events is going up. There is also a video recently of some young drunken farang being beaten up by two Thai guys outside a 7/11 or mini-mart. Before the violence, the young farang stopped to pet and show some love to a soi dog (100% tourist) before walking into the bashing. So I doubt the farang was looking for any trouble. What happened on that case?

I remember walking around alone (not drunk... just for exercise) at night in many cities around Thailand, I think I would not be so willing to do that nowadays. Such a shame.

I think you are right coxo we have a new teenage Thai sport just have to be very wary if you are out late after a few drinks, sadly it is now starting to become unsafe for some.

It's sad as these daft gets don't realise the harm such acts does to their country in the long term. Without farangs where would Thailand be now? Not too different to the likes of Laos and Cambodia would be my guess.

When Thailand becomes significantly more dangerous than farangland, I would think the farang who haven't burned their bridges would in increasing numbers exit. Is that happening? Anecdotally Stickman seems to suggest an exit is happening but I don't think personal safety is the sole reason. Personally I prefer to err on the side of caution in Thailand and farangland. It's not wise to hang out in areas with lots of drunk young men.

Thai bars, music concerts, temple fairs after 3PM and any other alcohol hazed function.... Actually, I imagine these incidents have been around forever but get a helluva lot more coverage when they're posted to YouTube.... As a GI here 40+ years ago it was not wise to get into an altercation with a group of drunken Thais.. They would invariably gang up on the GI and kick the crap out of him... So, nothing much has changed other than there are a lot more Farang here in Thailand and certainly with a larger population now (39 million in 75 and roughly 69 million now) plenty more drunken Thai guys...

Frazee there's a bit of a difference kicking a falang as opposed to kicking 2 OAPs on the ground already then to deliver a kick to the face of a woman. As i already told GT the difference in farang land is we don't go hunting in packs knocking out OAPs. Thats the diff between our culture and the thai culture. I suppose a married woman in New Zealand would send a pack of 8 men to sort out her husbands bit on the side two ?? 8 men to kick the ---- out of a 20 yr old girl same as anywhere else in the World ??? I don't think so.

The TW concedes there may be some anti-farang sentiment but thinks the underlying problem is alcohol and drugs and the same type of blokes are just as likely to assault or kill their own mothers, sisters and daughters.

yep, same as back when "Big Trouble In Tourist Thailand" came out, the production company ended up getting a legal hassle for exposing the jet ski scam and JJ pulling a rifle on the British sailors gets away scot free.

Its not just the Farang that get beaten up.. I've got Thai relations that post some of the most horrendous bullying and ass kicking by gangs not just of drunken Thai men but by teenage girls kicking the crap out of another girl.. The scary thing is that in the British family beat down none of the dozens of surrounding people did anything to stop the altercation and only a few ran in after the gang of drunken louts left to help the unconscious victims..

Yea, it would be totally unheard of for gangs of skinheads going around Paki and or gay bashing in the UK. Simply not in one's culture.

Thailand, nor UK or the US, aren't immune from prejudice idiots, or simply hooligan youths. Bashing for no reason, or the simplest of self justifications. Something as simple as wearing an opposing footie teams jersey.

Just watched a vid on youtube, of an Irish guy being pounced on by about 15 Turks, for knocking bottled water out of a frig display.

Silly drunken violence goes on worldwide. Hiding it, is something else, but we see it, as here and it's exposed. Wonder how much of the same is done in our home countries, and may be why........ we don't think it's as prevalent. Hidden much better than here.

This violence happens in both NZ and Oz
But it is reported
The police don't cover it up
The tourist boards can't cover it up
The movie world makes stories about it

How would you feel LA if your mum and dad got knocked out by 4 yobs then as your mum struggles to get up she gets kicked in the face again. The diff with skin heads paki bashing as you say is they wouldn't knock out an OAP then kick her in the face.

They wouldn't be that stupid, to go to a drunken celebration, in a foreign country, and mix inappropriately with the locals.

And all four would lose that fight, my father was a ranked boxer, and if my mother would shoot a gun at my father, I don't think she would have any problem capping 4 yobs that threatened her. They would have picked the wrong ones to F with.

In the most unlikely hypothetical scenario like that, jail would be the safest place for them.

Your poor old mum would not be packing heat in a foreign land
Dad might be able to defend himself but 1 individual hit takes away that advantage
The correct part is they not stupid enough to be around drunken celebrations

AS for this being either a Thai thing or a new trend that is rubbish
Happens all over the world and has always being happening
These countries I have been in, where have been advised don't go over there at that time NZ , Australia, USA, Portugal, and the UK ( Advice was given by locals or the police )
The difference today is ends up on social media as it has been filmed
