Has anyone got ant real update on the incident instead of all this backbiting etc.
Thai TV showed the elderly couple at Bangkok airport leaving Thailand stating they will never come back.
There was no update on the Court case & what was decided that what would happen to the perpetrators/hooligans.

Ah pal52, this is the problem up to and until the court case everything is pure speculation. The elderly couple have given evidence, not questioned by any defence ( says it all really ) this evidence will be submitted to the judge at the trial. Unfortunately as the victims cannot be questioned by the defence , it would appear to be a Kangaroo court where the sentence will have already been decided and the sentence will be given privately, maybe some press will have access, BUT whether this will be deemed important enough is open to conjecture.

Stickman at the end of his column this week opined:

"The sickening attack was nothing that hasn't happened in Thailand many times before. The difference this time was that one of the victims was an old lady. Thais ganging up on foreigners in great numbers and not letting up even when the foreigner is down is nothing new. With mobile phones with video recording capability, reports of such incidents are more common, but I am of the belief that it is only the reporting of such incidents that is on the increase and that this sort of thing has been happening for a long time. The Thais appear to be more concerned about who leaked the video than the incident itself. As per usual, they fear any negative effects it may have on their precious tourism industry. This should be a reminder that Thailand is not as safe as you may think, either in terms of vicious attacks like this or accidents due to carelessness or recklessness ... There are so many negative news stories involving foreigners in Thailand that are never reported, even on social media. Be careful out there - Thailand is much more dangerous than most think."
So he's saying same old same old rather than the place is getting worse. The perception can easily be it's getting worse as these kind of videos come to surface more frequently.

How would both you and Stickman know, you both live in NZ not here so you don't have your finger on the pulse at all.

I doubt that onlookers in Perth would stand by and do nothing if an elderly Thai couple were assaulted in a public space in Perth in similar circumstances.

In fact I am certain that just about every able bodies man and women present would have intervened, and would smack the ---- out of the attackers, and hold them for the police.

I have met KP and he chatted to him a few times, to me the farangs in Udon should ask someone in the mayors office or police be it RTP OR TP to meet every month with a spokesman for the Expat Community to keep them informed of the out come of arrested yobs that attack Expats in Udon and surrounding districts. They the Thai Authorities are always saying they want closer harmony with the Expat Community so its only fare that they tell the truth and ally the fears that yobs are given a light fine and released, let them know how you feel about your security. Lets not forget the Expat community put money into Udon;s Coffers and without the Expats what would Udon be like ??. Just a suggestion ????

Actually that is not entirely true, but unfortunately due to the set-up of Thai Government agencies, it is really incredibly difficult to find the right person to answer the questions about sentencing and subsequent punishment if any at all.
It is one that even for Thais is shrouded in secrecy, why ? I have no idea maybe it is to do with loss of face therefore the fewer people that know the less face you lose. The judges I know would never divulge that information almost on pain of death.
Maybe the Governor of Udon Thani province does know or he can find out, nice chap but definitely a NCPO man , therefore no help there.
There was occasion in the last 14 odd years when we did start to make progress towards a more enlightened and open local government here, but as with many things the shutters have come down and information has been almost cut off, it is who you know and what they know, are the only sources .

The Thais don't care about expats, tourists a little because it is a source of revenue.

I would say Stickman knows Thailand very well, he was more involved than most of us will ever be, has lived in Thailand for quite awhile and speaks Thai very well too. He definately has spent a lot of time looking into what goes on in Thailand.

You have a bad case of denial, but in order to live in Thailand and think it is so wonderful you would need to. I don't have a problem with what or where people live and do but they should have open eyes to reality.

Yes. True in some places. Probably should have happened in this case, but it didn't.

There are still flights from BKK to Perth.
But no direct flights from Perth to Phuket.

Stickman finishes his column this week:

"Much of the feedback to last week's column and the emails featured in this week's column was reaction to the story of the bashing of the British family in Hua Hin that week. That incident generated a lot of comment from readers. The opening piece the previous week was a photo essay of Soda, a dancer at Patpong 2 with an exotic look. Despite this column being known for nightlife, fewer emails were received about Soda than the Hua Hin bashing, notwithstanding that Soda was featured as an opening piece and the Hua Hin bashing was something I only commented on in the closing paragraph. I believe this reflects the way much of expat society has decoupled from the naughty nightlife industry. Expats in Thailand seem to be more interested in other things these days. In recent times I've noticed that there are two topics which generate more interest than others. The first is safety / the danger factor in Thailand - and any incidents involving foreigners generate strong interest. I also notice anything to do with medical care, hospital treatment and whatnot in Thailand is popular. Bangkok expat society really is changing, eh?"

Always thought Sticky to be a dam fine chap with a great site offering a helpful insight for those thinking about a Thailand visit or live so a very interesting paragraph and an accurate assessment....... i would add and this is only my opinion ....

With less less less and less new faces arriving here in Thailand and choosing (for whatever reasons) other Asean/Asia / World places to holiday , live transient or full time including retirement ...no wonder interest in the oldest profession and girly bars etc is dwindling , it must the case that a high percentage of the expats here in 2016 Thailand have been here longer and ""got the T shirt"" and now hopefully settled down so other areas of living here become more interesting and therefore focused on way more such as Safety , Health , Crime etc etc . I recall my first few years here , i was a lunatic , eyes on storks with a perminent boner ... must be getting old id rather have a decent curry than go to a gogo bar and be naughty nowadays ....

Soda is a darling BTW .... not that im interested of course :^o
