Before you buy a new phone, I'd be tempted to get your 600 online...
what happens when you select "com port" option after plugging into USB?
have a look in windows control panel/network&internet conn./phone&modem options/modems
Thanks for the link to the i-mobile site that has at least a few words of english on it. NOw I have a driver although it is for 98/ME and I have XP but at least I have a driver. HOWEVER, I dl the driver and while installing it came up with an error about a missing file "ccport.sys on (unknown) is needed" I'll google that tomorrow.

Anyway, when I plug it in and select com port the phone only shows up in control pahel/hardware/device manager and that is with an exclamation point and states that the drivers are nto loaded or can not be found. Now after the win98/ME drivers are onboard the phone moves from an i-mobile section in device manager to the usb hub section but still has the exclamation point there.

Perhaps I need to get back to Virginia and search for the CD. Not really like me to let it go without at least making a copy of it. I'm just never in virginia long enough to know what I have there besides a couple of children running up the electric bill.

WM,
If you can't find your CD... maybe your phone will work with something like this http://www.bvrp.com/eng/products/Connec ... re_PRO.asp

I have sent them an email enquiry about i-mobile 600, still awaiting answer..
I have used this software on Nokia, Motorola, and Sony phones... and is good and easy.
Fingers crossed that they can cover your phone :)

Thanks, It's late here at the moment so I set a bookmark and will take a look at it tomorrow after work. If I don't get it to work before I come I'll just stop by the shop that I bought it from and see if they have another one that I can use or rent or buy.

Sowever, I was going to buy another phone so that when Whean gets her visa she will have a spare. I'll just have to ensure that it has a decent modem before I buy it.

jumped on the nokia 6230i bandwagon, as no phone lines available in village. enjoy having internet back at house again, as expected, slow in comparison to prior satilite use or Pop Pop's internet shop. besides internet, as mentioned, it's a rather nice phone. the speed debate, mine is, i get, that's the other speed not the down/upload speed. link below will test your speed, both in thailand and international, also tell you your Ip address, if that interest you. read the instructions first, pick the country, default is UK, that will give you your international speed, thailand obviously for national. i did 3 test, uk, usa, thai. guess which was the slowest, so sad. oh well, if you really want to know, try the link below. it is depressing to see it in writing, but thrilled to have net at house again. my pages open anywhere between 1 -2 minutes for searching or moving graphics, to 10 - 40 seconds for initial text page, to searching text pages. so, ok. i find opening 4 or 5 pages convenient, though slow at first opening, but then i will read one as another loads in backround.

Hi LA,

Are you using a usb or bluetooth to connect your phone to the computer? Usb connections are much faster.

Also you may like to try the compression software from www.onspeed.com, it may help to speed up your connection, they quote up to 7x faster.

Once my pages are chached they load in a matter of seconds via my nokia, usually within 3-5 seconds per page.

Tried that speed test LA gave but don't understand the results, can any one advise.first tried with Nokia modem Download 42.96kbps upload18.32kbps
connection speed showing as 115kbps.
Second tried with TOT dialup. download 26.96kbps upload 99.12kbps connection speed shown as 40.0kbps.Yes 99.12 not a mistype, tried it twice.
Does that mean for uploading TOT is better than my Nokia?

wow, you're bit faster than mine, did it 3 times, i think my best was like 20, lost my notes. i think it means, the old modems were 28, then the big 56/v90's came out, then cable and better, putting the rest to shame. so we are back at the beginning of technology. i think the best we can expect for a server, without something special would be 128/256, which i found out in the past was 100/200 at best. your best dial up would be 56, depending on phone line, anywheres between 20 -50, so we are on the bottom curve of speed technology. but, like me, if it's the best you can get for the best price, i'm thrilled. if in town and your phone lines suck anyway, and the other servers are more expensive and hard to connect, then you have to be happy also. obviously large files or pic transfers, i will continue to harrass cliff at POP POP's.

That's probably about right, gprs is not the best system for uploading.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about your upload speed for general browsing. This is only important when you're tranfering/uploading files to the internet, or cookies/cache etc.

I am in the same situation (no fixed telephone line) but does not know anything about computers or phones. I will buy a brand new laptop and a phone.

If I buy this Nokia 6230i phone and a net simcard from DTac or Orange, what options must the computer have?

Do I need more equipment - modem, cable etc?

Somebody said USB is faster than BlueTooth - please inform me.

With this connection, will I be able to listen to radio, look Tv and download movies (I geuess not)?

Thanks.

A Nokia USB cable will cost you about 650 baht from the complex, but be warned there seem to be a large number of different cables & it can be a real pig to find the right one - PM me if you want some advice on where to go in the complex to make life easier for yourself.
To download movies is really a no, no unless you have ASDL. It takes a long, long time to do even a few seconds worth. You can just leave on, downloading and go out for a meal, but connections do drop out & then you have just wasted air time. I found the line dropping out a problem when out in the sticks, but less of a problem in Udon itself.
If you buy a lap top then you will not need anything else other than the phone (and maybe the cable if wireless is slow). However lap tops are more expensive for less power, so, unless you want the portability it may be better & cheaper to buy a desk top with a quick processor & as much memory as you can afford :D :D then you would probably beed a USB cable to connect the phone, or have a wireless card fitted - depends on the model you buy, I guess

i did'nt know anything about this before but i learnt it all off here.
i used gprs for 6 weeks in udon, used a motorola v3i razr, got a disk with the phone and loaded that on my pc,also came with USB lead,so if i need to use it it now i just plug phone in the USB port and the motorola program comes up on the screen the phone initializes and you are away, if you have camara/video phone you can also transfer pics to your pc, and make up tunes etc.
The phone itself is the modem, did'nt attempt to down load movies or listen to radio or view Tv, very slow on you-tube, but worked ok for browsing and using the forum also uploading photos was ok, line went down in evenings sometimes, just purchased 1 to call sim and phone cards to top up when needed.
so over all it worked fine.

aznyron, we have both internet and TV satellite services in Nongsamrong.

Ipstar Boadband Satellite Internet number in Bangkok is 0-2263-7171. Wish I had TOT ADSL but this will do for now.

UBC True (satellite TV) number in Bangkok is 0-2271-7171. Got to watch some NFL games on it and baseball starts next month. I'm happy with this one. :D
